How do you guys get through so many books? I finished one last year, and have already finished one this year, but I don't think I can keep it up throughout the year.

Do you like Spiderman? The first is alright, the second is atrocious.

Second one was really bad. You might like it though since you come from HDTGM.
Eh ok maybe I'll check them out.

I have an hour commute by bus each day so that's where I get the bulk of my reading done but sometimes if I'm in the reading mood or have a book I really like I just kick back at night and turn on some wordless music .. smooth jazz or classical or whatever .. and just read away.

I'm hardly a bookworm (read 11 books last year), but I have an hour commute (each way). So I read on the bus/train. And I try to force myself to read for 30 mins to an hour every night before bed.

There are tips in the OP about getting through books. Really helpful advice from Tragic.

It really comes down to how you want to spend your time. If you're absolutely jam packed schedule-wise there's the option of multi-tasking your reading like suggested above, during commutes. If you drive, instead of reading, try audiobooks. A lot of libraries offer them alongside e-books to borrow. In fact, I've found utilizing libraries e-book and audiobook selections as an invaluable resource as it saves you money and time.

Another thing that helps is identifying what genres/subjects you find most interesting and delving into those. It's much easier to commit to books about your interests than trying to force yourself to read things that you find boring. Once you know what you like, you can look around for Top 10, 25, 50, etc... Lists around the internet (including here on Gaf occasionally) and coupled with my earlier sugeestion of library's, just dive in.

As someone else said, it's all about how you allocate your leisure time. We all have a certain amount of time to ourselves each week, you can spend it watching movies or TV, playing games, listening to music or podcasts etc. If you choose to spend some of that time reading, you'd be surprised at how quickly you can get through a book.

I read maybe 15 books max last year which I don't think is a lot, but this year I'm participating in this challenge for the first time and I'm making the effort to watch less Netflix and spend that time reading instead. So far this week, I've finished 2 books.

I read for about 30 mins in the morning before heading out to work, I read a bit on my lunch break if I can, then spend 1-2 hours reading in the evening.

Did 3/4 of my challenge in the last a couple of months - That's nearly 30 novels. And get no credit for it. ;/
Feels bad man.

I always have a book with me and I have an audiobook playing whenever I can't read. I have to consciously make a choice to sit down and read instead of getting on the computer or watching TV.

Also Goodreads makes it fun to update how far along you are in a book and what new books to read next.

Consistency. Average 40 pages a day and you'll be at 14,600 pages by the end of the year. Assuming you are reading books that are around 250 pages, that's 58 books.

See? Easy.

I say this having been inconsistent for months now. I'm going to get back on the wagon! <_<

I should not have started this challenge with Wise Man's Fear. Loving every page of it but damn it's long. I've got Childhood's End and The Dead Zone on standby so I can blaze through them and stay on track if need be.

I finished Kingslaive (FFXV), it was so boring and so bad lol.

This week I started reading Art of War (Sun Tzu) since I wanted to for years. After such a crappy movie I think I'm gonna try to finish that tonight instead of doing something else.

I don't mind the odd mindless action film and because I thought Olympus Has Fallen was bearable to enjoyable, I thought I try out London Has Fallen 'cause it just hit Netflix.

Probably the worst film I've ever seen and I'm not being hyperbolic. So many awful things wrong with that story's premise and ideologies.

I'd like to keep up reading consistently it's just going by the past few years of me doing this challenge it hasn't gone so well. I already have 2 books down which is at least a start. I'm hoping to at least beat my previous book counts, if not finishing the actual challenge this year.

Weekly Update:

Added two movies:

#2 Central Intelligence ★★½
#3 The Infiltrator ★★★½

Love Cranston in this more then decent crime drama. Bit too much cliches throughout the movie, but i loved every minute of the two hour spectacle. Expected a bit more of Central Intelligence but got a few laugh's out of it.

Finished one book:

#1 Thomas Dekker: Mijn Gevecht - Thijs Zonneveld ★★★

An easy to read bio about a dutch cycling talent who lost his way in the performance enhancing drugs. A story about recklessness and how stubbornness cost him his career. Interesting read as i like the world of professional cycling. I'll follow it up with the second book I'm reading the biography of English cyclist David Millar.

Finished Art of War by Sun Tzu. Not really what I expected but too bad my Chinese is not good enough to ever read it in Chinese. Maybe I will try to find an audiobook on Cantonese one day.

Thought I'd crosspost this over here since most of you won't check the old thread probably. Anyhow, these charts got kind of ridiculously massive and I'll try to fix that in 2017. Seems like some of you all had lots of time over the holidays and actually remembered to update your posts.

Final totals for 2016 were:

Books: 2924
Movies: 5495

Docs are movies, right?
I just watched Ecstasy of Order, the tetris doc. loved it. maybe it's because I like tetris a whole lot, but I think they definitely created a strong enough narrative that made you want to keep watching. and then ending made it worth it
made the whole tournament seem pretty irrelevant tho.

I'm in the middle of George Orwell's 1984 right now, and I almost feel like I've read it before. Granted, I was already familiar with the themes and concept of Big Brother, but my familarity seems like more than that - yet I'm fairly certain this is my first time reading it.

Maybe it's because I've read Brave New World before, and despite being by different authors, they address the same themes, and have similar character arcs? I'm not really sure.

Added one movie this week. Bit disappointing but ill finish book #2 this week for sure.

Here is my original post. I just wanted to say that I saw Ivan's Childhood and thought it was really, really good. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Tarkovsky's work.

3. Ivan's Childhood (1962) ★★★★

I'm going to be traveling to Russia for 3 months in March, and I'm well-versed on russian literature and history, yet, don't know anything about their famed cinematic input. Tarkovsky of course is one of the most well-known russian directors, so I started with his first movie. It was excellent, a really bleak look at the effects of war, most of it implied (surely judging by the fact that it was made in Soviet Russia, without wanting to instigate Germans). Many shots in this film are a prime example of how movies can be art.

This for example, of a soviet soldier coming on to a young medic in the woods, holding her over a trench. This was perfectly done, and the script shined in this tense moment.

ed92f52195abae9c82dd53c532804405.jpg

Also another shot, which appears to be just as iconic as the previous one, of jagged wooden beams framing the picture and pointing towards the protagonist. Really, really cool.

Ivan_Web2.jpg

The ending was phenomenal. I love it when movies actually have a fitting conclusion, that goes in line with what the first two acts were leading towards.

How do you guys get through so many books? I finished one last year, and have already finished one this year, but I don't think I can keep it up throughout the year.

I'm doing well so far. I am finding that having multiple books going the same time is helpful. I also use audio books for my commute which is about 40 minutes each way.

Will do this alongside my goodreads challenge. Set 30 as my target there but looking at that as my minimum. Including BITWC here since read it alongside another relatively short book (Murakami's Strange Library). Not worth including both separately, but together both took enough time to warrant some sort of note.

It's gonna be fun looking back at this list because I plan on re-reading and re-watching quite a few books and movies because I originally experienced them in German when I was younger. Started with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, now I'm going through the entire Dark Tower series in English for the first time and I'm probably gonna do the same with Harry Potter.
