Thread of overlooked PC indie games recommendation

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
I made a thread for Driftmoon but nobody replied so I guess it counts as overlooked? Here's some of what I wrote...

Alextended said:
Driftmoon is an upcoming indie adventure RPG by the creator of the oldie freebie survival game Notrium that some of you may have heard of (also, the Magebane games). You can prepurchase the game (11.99 Eur) and gain access to the alpha versions (4 is the latest), similar to Minecraft (I guess). I haven't done that but Notrium was awesome so I will at some point. Oh, the game's also going to have powerful editing tools. Anyway, here's the new trailer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_BPnS2_Dbg&hd=1

I'm pretty excited as Notrium was badass and this seems to have some similar aspects despite being an RPG rather than just a game of survival.

I missed your thread, but did stumble upon the trailer yesterday (indiegames.com I believe). I don't quite know what to make of it though. It has its interesting aspects, but the combat doesn't inspire me with confidence right now. Still, I'm mildly interested.

It's early, the changelog for alpha 4 says it adds the talent tree for example. Also, vsync. Lol. It's to be fully modable too. Notrium was modable itself, I think it was fairly popular for what it was. You can play it (I can't confirm it runs on Vista/7), it's free, as long as you keep in mind it's ancient and a survival game, so not Driftmoon 0.5.

Yeah, I haven't written it off yet. I just hope that the combat turns out to be decent, but sometimes trailers aren't able to show you how good a game is, as is the case with

Din's Curse and its expansion Demon War

KE4s9l.jpg

Developer: Soldak Entertainment.

Imagine Tristram. Now imagine that the whole world is covered with towns like that one. That is basically the idea behind Din's Curse. In this hack-and-slash games, the player can choose between 7 classes with three talent groups (there are no trees here) or make a hybrid that can freely pick from all talent groups, but is limited to having only two of them. The towns and the dungeons beneath them are randomly generated and one of the unique selling points of the game is the fact that the enemies within do not merely exist to be gutted by your avatar. Instead they have agenda's of their own, may become stronger by killing enemies, build structures to hamper your progress, and may even invade the town and kill off its inhabitants (pray they don't get to the quest givers). Dungeons are also filled with traps and cave-ins are a constant threat. The game also comes with quite a lot of options. Change the strength of monsters, have more but weaker monsters (or the opposite), have the game create larger dungeons, give your character a particular handicap (always hungry, hardcore mode, only being able to carry cursed items etc.). Also has multiplayer.

Try the demo or buy the game from Soldak Entertainment or Gamersgate.

Anybody have an alternate link to the english patch for La-Mulana?

The download has refused to finish the last twenty times I tried it.

(I have the game installed, just need the patch)

Man it really is too bad hearing how much trouble Joakim Sandberg has been having. I bought Noitu Love 2 not that long ago and its a badass game. Seems like most of his other games are awesome as well. I might have to check them out after work...

I am currently working on a project involving indie games and hearing things like that makes me sad. :(

There is a kickstarter page now for No Time to Explain. (trailer)

*Kickstarter page

They have already exceeded their target of 7000$ (within 24 hours), which means that all the extra funding will go towards making console versions (which is kind of irrelevant for this thread of course). A pledge of 5$ will net you the game while it will cost around 10$ at launch.

Gogogo!!!

Developer: Cryptic Comet.

A multiplayer turn-based game (there is a singleplayer, but it's insignificant in the grand scheme of things) that is about becoming ruler of Hell through backstabbing, deceiving and careful planning. Read the Rock, Paper, Shotgun reports on their time with the game to get instantly excited.

Try the demo or buy the game from Cryptic Comet

I'd like to say that this is perhaps the best thread I've seen in years. I've spent so much time enjoying all these games, and it has rekindled my love for video games. And not a massive marketing campaign in sight.

This looks like fun; I'm getting a Machinarium vibe from it. Loving the music. Will be picking it up once I get paid, thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Careful, I've played through the first section and a bit of the second and it's nothing like Machinarium in execution. You are the mouse cursor and the gameplay itself is a combination of pixelhunting (find items to open machines etc.) and familiar puzzle-types such as jigsaw puzzles, somethjng akin to a slider but less frustrating and a few others up until where I am right now. It's closer to those hidden object games than to a point-and-click adventure. As it stands right now, I'm not quite sure whether it belongs in this thread, but l'll have to play it a bit more before I can give a definitive judgement.

Tiny Bang Story is going to be awesome!(haven't had a chance to play!)

Also has SpaceChem not been mentioned in this thread? Game also kicks ass and is one of the most interesting puzzle games in years!

A Japanese guy has been making a surprisingly nice Fighter in the vein of Red Earth/Warzard.

Basically you play a Fairy taking on various monsters each with their own theme and creative fighting styles. It's made by a single guy named eluku and is a work of pure love. The amount of animation he has created is simply staggering.

But to say the game is NSFW would be an understatement. Is it okay to post some more and a link to his blog if I mark it as NSFW or will that get me into trouble.

Oh yeah, and Desktop Dungeon is awesome, great time waster in the office and doesn't need an install. Halfling priests are broken :p

This thread needs way more Warsow:

Quake III + Cell shaded + dash/walljump = amazing. Every shooter that I play that isn't this feels like it is limiting how awesome I can be.

This is the default LAN game for me and my buddies, I also host a server for it.

Of course I did. ;)

It's on page 4 somewhere, but it needs to be mentioned more. It's not often that you come across such a gem with hardly anybody taking notice (on this board, at least, I've seen it getting more attention elsewhere). It's the very definition of overlooked and underappreciated.

SpaceChem is one of the few puzzle games that absolutely stump the living hell out of me for long periods of time.

And then it all falls into place.

Sooooooo beautiful.

Why doesn't this thread get more love!?!?

I recently tried out BEEP as an impulse buy on Steam. It's pretty enjoyable so far although the puzzles haven't been very tough at all. Still one the first planet though it seems.

I have also been playing The Polynomial on and off for a few days. Pretty interesting concept although it's not going to blow anyone away in the gameplay department. Even still the visuals are definitely worth it and I really want to play with the editor after seeing the Christmas Tree visualization they included with the game.

VVVVVV is probably the shiniest gem out there. I want a sequel. Such a clever, charming game.

Yeah there really are a lot of indies releases sneaking out of nowhere.

Anyone see that Lume has released as well? Looks like a cool puzzle game with a really awesome art style.

Spiderweb's games. I didn't think they would fit, but I found an old blog post from 2009 saying Geneforge 4 only sold something like 4000 copies. It wasn't their best selling title by a long shot and it was one of the few they only sold through their own website alone rather than also via third party digital distribution portals and services, but apparently at that point it was just about profitable and it kept selling. Seriously though. 4000 copies! Thank God they keep making these for as long as they have (over 15 years!).

So, yeah. Old school RPGs. In short, the Fallouts and Baldurs Gates of the indie world. Some are more open ended with huge worlds and tons of factions, some are less so, some are party based, some are not, most are at least good with at least above average writing, some are awesome, all are turn based, all have lengthy demos to try for yourself.

The latest is Avadon - The Black Fortress and we're discussing it over here. It's pretty damn good, though it's their most streamlined so far. Still, the story is nice and the combat is really good, while the engine and interface improvements are welcome, though it still looks dated (who cares!). Have some 720p screenshots, all from the demo areas alone.

Also, it doesn't look like they'll be getting it on Steam. That sucks, it could have helped them. I mean, Steam got Eschalon on there and that's, well, not on the same league, imo. Still, it's on various other digital distribution services, like Desura and the Mac App Store, if you don't feel confident about purchasing directly from them (I don't see why not).

I just read on Zachtronics blog that SpaceChem is currently 50% off on Steam!

Anyone who hasn't bought it yet really needs to get their shit together and do it! Such a great game!

But I will only buy it if it's on Steam! No Steam, no sale! Damn you, developer, try harder and realise the value that Steam adds! Ignoring Steam is the biggest mistake you could make!

I bought the game from Gamersgate, by the way.

Great topic! In these indie topics I almost always feel like I have to chime in on how Game X or Game Y was omitted. Stuff like Mighty Jill Off and rRootage are frequently (and oddly) overlooked when indie platformers or shooters are discussed. Within a Deep Forest gets overlooked for Knytt too, which is a huge shame. Great to see Blocksum getting some love as well.

But you nailed pretty much all of them!

Others that stand out in my mind(no time to write them up right now. Just google them):

When Pigs Fly (flash frustration platformer from Mighty Jill Off Dev)
Karoshi: Suicide Salaryman
Meritous
This is the Only Level & Achievement Unlocked
Two Rooms

I also want to point out that Immortal Defense is absolutely amazing. I consider myself a Tower Defense aficionado. I've played the good ones. I've played the bad ones. I've played the hybrids. I've played... pretty much all of them. Even after all these hours of Tower Defense I still get sucked into new flash TD games all the time (Mofuya Defense...).

And Immortal Defense is probably the best Tower Defense game I've played. Which means it's probably the best tower defense game ever created.

Even if you disagree with that bold statement, there's no denying that Immortal Defense is well at the top of that bell curve, and absolutely deserves to be played.

Best of all it's permanently available on a pay-what-you-want basis. So throw the devs a few bucks and download it: http://studioeres.com/immortal/buy?home

Agreed, even though I haven't played as much TD as you. Defense Grid and Plants vs. Zombies get all the attention, but I actually prefer Immortal Defense.

Ha, no. Not that one. Although I did play a bit of the better FPS/TD hybrid that came out recently.

That's not the point. Point is everyone should buy Immortal Defense.

Yeah, seriously. Go buy Noitu Love 2 now folks, it's really really awesome and the dude isn't a douche. His website now has some information about the situation, he's setting up donation buttons and will try to do smaller games to get the cash for the bigger projects he wants to do, like Iconoclasts. Hopefully it will all work out.

Just bought it, and got the demo for Iconoclasts too. Nothing like charming old school fun.

I wouldn't have know this stuff even existed without this thread, so a big thanks.

I tried to get into the competive Warsow scene but only played like ~10 official matches when it came out.

I wonder if anyone still plays it

Okay well this is kinda self-pimping which I know is a no-no but most people on here don't speak Japanese anyway so it shouldn't count!

My company here in Osaka has just released our own distribution site for indies games. We just launched today and there is not much content, but what is there is top quality.

Basically we are localizing these indies games(mostly at our own cost) in order to distribute them in Japan.

Besides selling games one side of the site is a crowdfunding project similar to 8-bit funding or kickstarter.

It is all in Japanese but if anyone wants to check it out: www.playism.jp

I think I have finally landed my dream job :O

Oh fuck yes /dies happy

Looks like that Neo-Classical Shmup Jamestown just came out on Steam a couple of days ago.

Anyone picked it up? It does look pretty awesome although I was pretty disappointed to hear there was no online co-op.

Project Zomboid looks pretty awesome, I may have to give that a shot!

I have to give a shout out to Frozen Synapse, as it's been eating my brain for the last week or so. It's sort of a turn-based, top-down Counter-Strike with procedurally generated maps.
Very polished and professional, and the gameplay is amazingly solid. The sense of suspense when submitting a turn and satisfaction when your plans go smoothly are unparalleled in any game in recent memory.

It's kind of hard to explain very well without video, so check out these:

While I want to see more PC indie talk, there's too much goodness in this thread to abandon it. I still occasionally come back to it to try a new recommendation made months ago.

Do it.

We got project zomboid, Capsized (Awesome game), and a whole lot more indie games around which deserve some publicity.

Some of this games I only learn from gaf posts randomly. Zomboid I learned from a random post from ZZMitch likes the one up here and the game fucking deserves all the attention. Now if you excuse me i'll take this pillow and kill my wife right at the start of the game. Love zomboid.

BobsRevenge

I do not avoid women, GAF, but I do deny them my essence.
I never see Downfall mentioned anywhere. It is the most twisted adventure game I've ever played, and the puzzles are surprisingly sensible. I highly recommend it. Its also easier to play than Gemini Rue, which is awesome.

Being rejected by Steam is hardly the same as 'ignoring' Steam.
Developers would love to have their game on Steam, but Valve's Steam staff often just flip a coin. A lot of quality games get rejected from Steam, or simply they ignore correspondence.
