How people can view PSP as not successful on ANY sort of level is simply beyond me.

Its going to pass GBA SP model sales in just a year (6.5 million source is Nintendo's report), hit 6 million in Oct-Nov and with boost of sales for christmas, be past the GBASP by summer 08'.

At this rate it will take the PS3 nine years to overtake the Gamecube.

I've seen a small resurge from the PSP. Before the next gen consoles came into the scene, PSP in japan was bullied as hell and I remember it fell into sub-20k numbers, only to regain some ground with solid if not spectacular 25-45k sales.

Assuming this happens with the PS3, let's say the console gains some momentum and sells 20k per week once a price drop and some decent selection of games is being offered to the consumer.

how long would it take for the PS3 to surpass the NGC in LTD sales?

thanks for doing the math I am too lazy to do :p

That's great. Maybe they can start selling games too, then.

well, we could have said the same about Mario sunshine in the USA. The game sold loads of units but the hardware flopped hard.

it's an inverse case here. Hardware sells, software don't.

My point is, low software figures don't make hardware figures less worthy or less decent.

EDIT: to add that what is not bolded doen't make a good point. Please pretend I didn't write that and read the bolded.

And PSP software is where Sony is making money (from). One of the reason Sony console business got 1.5 Billion loss in year 2007, the bigger loss ever (for Sony console business).

Have you seen the top 30 charts?

Maybe if you werent so cranky and sarcastic to boot you would notice that PSP has the number one selling game this week! Nintop21owned!

These numbers are even more amusing if you remember back to the middle years of PS2 selling 80,000 a week and people saying they must be building houses out of them.

Not that I think it's a failure, but umm you're comparing the PSP to a singler version of the GBA, that when all put together sold over 16 million? Why would you do that?

1. Look at the #1 selling title for the week. Whoops?

2. Multimedia device, first and foremost. Software sales are pretty outstanding for a entertainment device ala the PSP. Put games on the Ipod and they would not be selling this well.

3. The chart says everything else successful in some sort of mannor (or the likes). PSP has sold over 20 million systems worldwide, and will be over 6 million in Japan alone by the end of this year. Looking at hardware sold, and profit alone it can be deemed a success. I was simply correcting whoever made the rather childish (no offense) f*cked chart.

The new PSP revision is going to match the sales of the original GBA. And the inevitable PSP micro will enable PSPs total hardware sales to match, if not overcome the GBA. But you never seem to see the big picture do you?

Do you have source for the "profit alone" part ?

Success is not binary! PSP could've been such a greater success had its software sales materialized. PSP is not an outright failure in the absolute sense of the word, but without a question it is a failure to capitalize on PLAYSTATION mindshare.

Edit: Oh, you're banned. I don't have to yell anymore :lol

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War for PSP is #1

Total unit sales for the top 100 titles totalled 769,131, an amount 53.69% of last week's total, and 60.01% of the weekly average.

Every year in the wake of Golden Week, downward trends in both sales and the number of new releases are strong. This year is no exception, as sales dramatically dropped off by half, making it the worst sales record for the year thus far. However, this still exceeded the sales recorded last year (about 686,000 units) and the year prior (about 287,000 units), showing a strengthening of the market.

The newest 3 ranking titles comprised 21.36% of weekly sales. Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War claimed the lion's share. A remake of Final Fantasy Tactics, originally released in June of 1997, it sold 154,891 units to allow the PSP to claim the top spot for the first time in a while.

As for prior releases, Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings and other titles for the DS and Wii continued their deep-seated popularity, fortifying Nintendo's claim to the most title rankings. In particular, Brain Age, 1000 Recipes, and others like it maintained their Golden Week levels of sales, presumably due to the demand generated by Mother's Day.

We could talk about that, or we could talk about how the DS just passed 17 million and is closing the gap on PS2.

Or we could just continue to laugh at PS3. :lol

Oh, I guess he can't hear me anymore.

My Chemical Mouse, after reading your reactions in the NPD thread, would you say the PS3 'has' to have a comeback in Japan much like you've predicted for North America?

And please don't bring up the Ipod when people are discussing software viability of a platform, that's a new level of reaching.

The PSP's hardware sales are impressive, it's the most successful 2nd place console/handheld ever in Japan...but the game sales simply aren't piling up as expected with a userbase its size. It's sold 2x WW what the Xbox360 sold and it can't hold a candle to its software sales.

And don't forget that FFTA on GBA sold 225K first week, while FFT:LW (port ??) on PSP sold 154K on first week.

Lol at MCM banned. Dragona has decided that he has contributed enough in the MC and NPD topic. How long is the ban, mod ?

About #8. Better be careful in the future. Is there a possibility that you will be banned (not permitted to enter) from a shop because you are only asking, but never bought anything ?

About #9. If the purchaser of old reliable decided to return (sold as used console) the PS3 console to Hiro, is Hiro obliged (must accept) to receive the old reliable ? I am not sure how the Japanese (or Famicom Dojo) standard business practice /policy regarding the "sold as used console" for good bought from their store.

#8 Fear not, I buy plenty of games. I have yet to go through a thursday "Village Check" without buying something. They know me as someone who knows games and buys games.

#9 I have read this over several times and I am still not wuite sure what you are asking. "old reliable" was sold as a new console (because it had never been opened/played). If the guy who bought it wants to sell it back to Hiro he will get the price of a used console (because it is now used). But Hiro is under no obligation to buy it back if he does not want to.

And to those asking, YES, the Wii is supply constrained.
