Made the really smart move of starting Marvel Heroes which is really productive. I'm SO glad I finally finished Fire Emblem [actually used the Keep option on GameFly, got to use 5 dollars credit on that, but I'm going to keep it in the rental section because obviously I bought a game I beat so it doesn't matter] so timesink RPGs are, at least for the time being, behind me; I don't think I have anything on GameFly that can really compare other than SMT4 in a month.

I did go -1 for the last two weeks and I may go in on that current Groupees bundle which contains four games I want [Syberia 1/2, Still Life 1/2] so my next update might end up ugly unless I finish Infamous, Yoshi's Island, and some adventure games. I know I'm borrowing Tomb Raider from a friend in the near future also, which will put a damper on some progress. At this very moment though I am liberated from GameFly games [Heavenly Sword just shipped yesterday] so I can make some actual progress. Looking forward to it improving..... hopefully.

Gunpoint is really cool by the way! Hope everyone checks it out.

Oh hey, I just published online the webapp I use to handle my backlog and upcoming releases. It's this thing:

ibeB06eY4S5AvX.jpg

I coded it because I wanted something
* simple,
* intelligent enough to sort dates like "Q3 2013",
* fast to use (it's all ajax in a single page) and
* that I made myself.

Have at it if you want, registration is quick: http://games.aincrad.cc

I hope it works. Other than half the CSS, I made this in two days.

It's been a sloooow Q2 for me. Bought and started The Last of Us and the HIB8, and that's about it for the past 3 months. Wish I had more time to play games, but at the same time, having such a busy schedule means not having time to buy either.

Limping along. As I'm about to go on a holiday, and then come back for a huge shopping spree, I think I should cherish this positive score while I still can.

Updated.

Impressions:
DH Supreme (4/5) - I used to do a lot of downhill mountain biking and it always bummed me out that the last great game was downhill domination for the PS2 that I never even played. I always thought the iPhone would be a great platform for that game and after being utterly disappointed by Steve Peat's game I gave up hope. Well, this game has come the closest to scratching that itch and although the style of the game is incredibly common the fact that a mountain bike was a vehicle with upgradeable parts made it darn near perfect (for me).

Impossible Road (3.5/5) - I recall seeing this a number of times in the app store before I finally pulled the trigger. Initially I was upset with the purchase because I felt like it wouldn't get very far with it and it was just another one of those dumb-buy games. I found myself going back to it every time I got bored or wanted a break and would give it two or three tries. I found myself devising strategies to jump the roads rather than roll along it. I got to 20 checkpoints, then 30, and then 45 and I finally realized I was making a fair amount of progress. I eventually maxed out at around 85 or so and while I don't really consider that the *end* to the game I happy with the value I got out of it and probably have gotten a fair amount of play time in.

Kerbal Space Program (5/5) - Well I'm not totally sure what prompted this purchase as every time I saw it on Steam I thought it was incredibly dumb looking. I watched the video in the store to and that confirmed my suspicions. While listening to the Idle Thumbs podcast I heard them talking about it and thought to myself "Why would these guys be playing this dumb game?" and so I turned up the volume, listened a little more closely, and 20 minutes later I had bought the game. Since the game didn't do a great job of making it clear what it was I will do that for those of you that care: Kerbal Space Program is space flight simulator that allows you to build space crafts (plane or rocket) and launch them into orbit through planned out flight stages with heavy focus on real world physics. You are given a blank canvas when building the ship and from there you add various electronic components for stability, fuselages, structural supports, aerodynamic units (cones/wings), and of course various jet engines. The builder tool makes it incredibly easy to put the crafts together but it became clear within 3-4 designs that just because it was easy to make something it did not mean it was going to work. Over the course of 2 days I put 15 hours into this game and have since gone back to launch a ship or review the satellites that I put into orbit. My goal when getting this game was to try to make a ship and get it into space and have it do something there. I was able to get a satellite together with automated solar panels, and about 6 other rockets that are infinitely floating around the planet Kerbal. I learned quite a bit about space travel from my brief stint with this game; ranging from vocabulary to concepts about space travel. Engineering being a huge interest to me I found this game to really fill that need and the fact that I learned something that matters outside of the game is incredibly impressive in my opinion. What amazes me the most about this game is the dedicated community that surrounds it. If you are at all interested in the game I would recommend watching some of the videos by Scott Manley on YouTube. He has some great intro videos but also explains some of the more advanced concepts. If you watch some of the related videos you will see the extent to what this game allows you to do (moon landings, space stations, inter planetary travel, space mining, refueling). So this game comes with my highest recommendation and if space and building things is of interest to you, buy this game.

$ - indicates game was purchased in 2013
+ - inidicated game was a PS+ freebie or was free in some other form, no points are awarded to these titles for completion or ownership.

Notes: Sorry I have been so absent lately. I have just started a job and a am also trying to learn Ruby on Rails which is taking up all of my time. I've barely touched video games in the past month and a half :(.

Nifty AND saffron-colored!
Since the current generation is coming to an end and there's no upcoming games I'm looking to buy (with the exception of Dark Souls II - but I'll most likely grab it on PC) I decided to tally up all the games/DLC I own and have yet to play.

† = games I've started.

360:
Alan Wake DLC
Dragon Age 1 DLC †
Fallout 3 DLC †
Mass effect 1 DLC †
Mass effect 2 DLC †

Alan Wake American Nightmare
Assassin's Creed 3
Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
Assassin's Creed Revelations
Bastion
Batman Arkham City
Crysis 3 †
Dead Space 2
Fallout New Vegas †
Far Cry 3
Final Fantasy XIII-2
Mass Effect 3
Metal Gear Rising
Red Dead Redemption †
Sleeping Dogs
Skyrim †
Stranglehold
Tomb Raider
Two Worlds 2

PC:
Bioshock 2
Deus Ex Human Revolution †
Metro 2033
Stalker: Call of Pripyat †
Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl †
The Witcher
The Witcher 2 †

PS3:
God of War III
Metal Gear Solid 4
Journey

Puny list compared to most of you, but I don't really have a habit of buying games and then not playing them (edit: that might be a lie). Now the only question is where do begin? (it won't be Two Worlds 2)

Not going to be buying any more games for a few months at least, so now's the time to do some real damage on my backlog after coasting for the past few months.

I'm adding Fortune Street to the "completed" pile. It's a rare case where I didn't technically finish the single-player mode, but I'm adding it anyway. I played a dozen or so of the single player challenges, and they both take forever and beating the AI isn't very fun.

I had picked this up after the Giant Bomb TNT where they played it, and it looked like a some good dumb fun, and I'm a bit of a board game nut anyway. I took it to play with my sister and her husband and kids, who also play a lot of board games. We played several times over a multiple visits in the intervening years, and it was fun each time. The game really only works when there's trash-talking and goofing around with friends playing locally. I don't think it supports online play, but it doesn't matter. I wouldn't play it online anyway.

The game basically functions like a more-complicated version of Monopoly. There is a stock market based on property groups (districts) and the various boards have branching paths, which adds a lot of variety to the games. Each board has for "suit" squares (hearts, diamonds, clubs, spades) that you need to pass (but not land on) in order to go to the bank (equivalent of passing Go in Monopoly) and get a payday.

(Thankfully) Unlike Monopoly, the game isn't played as a long-slog deathmatch where one player has to systematically eliminate all the others. Instead, the players try to build up assets until one reaches a pre-determined Net Worth and wins the game. This fixes the biggest issue with Monopoly, but some still remain. If a player gets a streak of unlucky rolls early on, they can be in a rough spot with no worthwhile assets down the road, but the availability of stock and using that to profit off other player's investments still gives a player a way to come back or even slow down another player by way of deterring them to invest, or decreasing their net worth by bailing out of the market in their districts.

In the end, it's a fun game for local-multiplayer lovers of board games, but I can't imagine anyone would get much out of it if they don't meet those very specific interests and local player availability.

Currently Playing
Minecraft (360 Edition) - I started watching the Achievement Hunter Let's Play videos of Minecraft, and they made it look so fun I finally ended up paying for and diving into the addicting world of Minecraft. At first I wasn't going to count it because since it's a creative game like Animal Crossing I didn't think you could actually "beat" it, but apparently there is something considered a "final boss" to work towards beating in the game, so I'll add it to my backlog.
Fable III - Also currently working my way through this. It was this month's free game for Gold users on the 360, so I downloaded it at the behest of a friend. It's pretty fun and I should be able to complete it, so even it being free shouldn't be much of a burden on my backlog.

On the Agenda
I foresee Minecraft taking up a lot of my gaming time in the near future. After finishing up Fable III, I'll probably move on to trying to finish System Shock 2 - I started it but died a lot and got frustrated so I took a break. Good game, will return to it and hopefully not get creamed as horribly. I also started Tiny & Big: Grandpa's Leftovers on Steam and it seems like a short game, so I should get around to finishing that as well to kill more of my Steam backlog.

I wasn't able to keep myself from purchasing several games this month, but on the other hand I went on a Steam tear and knocked out a bunch of old adventure games I'd bought but never touched. Hopefully I'll set some time aside and knock out a few more of the smaller, bitesized Steam games I have sitting around untouched this month as well. Also hopefully I'll steer clear of the Steam sale because that's what always ends up putting me in the negatives every year.

**I starred the LoZ: Oracle games because I purchased and beat them back on the Game Boy Color already, but wanted to repurchase them to have something to play on my 3DS while I was watching things on Netflix. Already beaten Seasons and am most of the way through Ages for the the second time, but since they are repurchases I didn't count them towards either tally.

Well I might as well post it here.

I decided to stop buying games last November due to my huge backlog and pretty much no time to play games any more.

I started to play again since the last week an I managed to finish Uncharted 2 and Killzone 3.

Animal Crossing ~ 115 hours

Animal Crossing had me by the balls this month so I ended up finishing 0 games(but I'm near the end of a few). Lots of backlog growth potential with the Steam Summer Sale looming. I have 63 dollars in my steam wallet and luckily it's not my own money(<3<3 steam trading cards) so those purchases technically dont count.

SMT IV hits in July and Like EO4, and Soul Hackers will be a game I'll playthrough to the end.

Well these last two weeks were ugly as predicted but partly from deals I didn't see coming. Didn't realize Rogue Legacy would come out so soon, another Humble Bundle added two additional games I was interested in, a deal on Animal Crossing came up on Amazon, didn't know Picross e existed until a couple days after I posted, Evoland went on sale on GOG...... not pretty really. And then of course Steam hasn't done their sale yet which is pretty terrifying, especially now that I have money from the trading card system. Haven't even been able to touch Animal Crossing [it should be shipping today] and obviously that's not even a game you "beat" so I think my productivity is officially over. :(

I'm really close to beating Rogue Legacy, at what I assume is the final boss, but it looks like it'll be a grind which isn't too fun. No progress made on Yoshi's Island, and in a way I want to start reading again since I haven't been using my Kindle in a while. Gonna have to look back and see how I've done on a month-to-month basis since starting this but I think it's all been a steady decline. This time though, adventure games...

Ended up only getting 3-4 days of break in the beginning of June before I had to get back to work. So obviously had less time to clear my backlog. |||OTL Right now I am juggling between New Super Luigi U, Gyakuten Kenji 2 and Ni no Kuni. I'll probably take a break from the latter since I find the game rather boring. Also expecting some more 3DS games to arrive pretty soon (M&L, PxZ and a bunch from Japan), so yeah...I am only expecting even more negative score for this month.

I've been incredibly busy and the only gaming I've been able to do is in very short bursts. I didn't actually buy anything again this month but still added three to the backlog.

Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty (6/5) - I was not at all impressed with this. I knew going in it was going to be different from the rest of the series but it really left me wanting, Oh well it was only $5.

Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time (6/12) - Now this, this, was a great game. Easily the best in the series. Clank's sections were finally enjoyable and the weapons were all fun and useful. The RYNO V playing the 1812 Overture was just fantastic.

I did list 5 games for the July backlog thread that I was going to focus on, though I think I'll ignore that and focus on clearing games I've bought this year... so I'll focus on...

Fire Emblem: Awakening (2 chapters from the end!)
Injustice: Gods Amonst Us
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
FTL

With no more NBA league pass to watch as well as less interest in WOW atm I should hopefully get some games finished this month, have like 1 and a half weeks of work as well.

Finally have a month wherein I didn't spend money. Kingdom Rush Frontiers was bought with the remaining balance I had in my Apple account. Its probably my favorite Tower Defense game series. I was surprised by the first one last year and this one is just as good. Its kinda like going from SMG1->SMG2. Feels and plays the same but with new cool ideas. Its also going to be in my GOTY list, really love the game and I play it a lot.

Also spent some time tackling the games I bought the previous month. Loved the gameplay in Crimson Shroud , but it had this weird ending, don't know what to say but it was interesting. Didn't have time to play for New Game+ though. After finishing and playing the hell out of Age of Empires II HD, I decided to take Age of Empires III for a spin. And first thing I noticed is how well it plays on my old machine. I hated how AoEIIHD runs like shit and I thought it was my ageing hardware, just shows how poorly optimized it was. Anyway, on the gameplay side, it was average for me tbh. The expansions helped improve the game a lot though. But then again, I might just have my nostalgia goggles when I keep on comparing it with AoEII. I have also finally finished the only handheld Zelda game I never played. Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages was a blast and really reminded me of my childhood since Ages was my first Zelda game. Also like how a linked game will reference you a lot with the first game you played and keeps that continuity between game. Although I keep wondering how the hell I was able to beat Oracle of Ages when I was a kid, with no internet/guides and even save states. I felt burned out though when I started Ages right after beating Seasons.

Forgot to mention that I had some access with Playstation Plus due to the PS Asia anniversary and got a free trial of 2 weeks. Won't include them in my backlog because of the rules and its more like a rental anyway. Ended up getting Disgaea, Soldner-X and Uncharted: Golden Abyss. Only finished Uncharted, well, it feels and plays like Uncharted with very annoying touch screen QTEs and the one who put that 'Bring your Vita camera near a light' part needs to fired, almost couldn't progress beyond that because its having trouble detecting light despite numerous attempts with different light sources. Didn't like Soldner-X at all and no time for Disgaea, though I would prefer the PSP since I prefers RPGs on handhelds.

Since I'm waiting for SMTIV this month, I'm currently playing Mana Khemia and trying to get into it, might also switch to Raidou 1 to finally finish it and kinda prepare for SMTIV. I've also been holding back and controlling my urges to buy a new game and I've done pretty well on passing up on Project X Zone and even getting Atelier Totori Plus.

Eh.. Oops.

Fable 3 is beat. I actually liked this one much better than 2, mostly because the combat is improved. Also the streamlining worked in my favor, I prefer it that way

Was looking forward to having my total backlog at 10 but 2 games from my wife's backlog made their way into my pile. I didn't buy them so I'm not counting them as +2 bought but they are +2 to total left. So I'm now at 12. Got a few things to do tomorrow so I'll decide what's next during that. Cosplay costumes are almost done so I'll be able to play games a lot more then.

Sorry for the double post, but I guess I'm the only one here boss enough to beat any games

Home stretch for the cosplay costumes. Should be done in 1 weekend of full work. We'll probably spread it out since there's so little to do left and an entire month before deadline, though. Next video game up will most likely be either Shadow of the Colossus HD or Skyward Sword.

Overall progress:

I fully intend to take advantage of the Steam Sale. Combine that with my tightening schedule and I think my place in the Backlog Blitz is pretty much over, although I will continue to update regardless.

Updated.

I've also been buying a handful of games from the Steam sale and last week I got 19 free iOS games. It will take me months to recover.

Skyward Sword is cut out from the bottom. What an infuriating game. I put 5 hours into it in disbelief; it's a Zelda game, there's no way it's anything but amazing, right? 5 hours later and I'm considering quitting the entire franchise.

Puts me at +12, for now.

Beat (+15):
1. Barkley, Shut up and Jam: Gaiden - 1/4
2. Persona 4 (PS2) - 1/28
3. Ys: The Oath in Felghana - 2/16

2. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - 7/15

Another +1/-1 for the list. never going to get through the backlog if the only games I actually finish are new. Oh well, at least it's not getting any bigger.

Rogue Legacy - Time to finish - 20h39m by in-game counter.

The basic premise is that you're a knight trying to get all the treasure out of a castle. Each time you die, you get a randomly-generated ancestor, (you get 3 to choose from) with a class and some traits. Traits can be things like Dwarfism (which makes you tiny), ADHD (which makes you run fast) or Dyslexia (which garbles allt he text in the game. Some of the traits also apply visual filters to the game, all of which are pretty amusing the first time you use them.

The actual gameplay is a side-scrolling platformer in the vein of Castlevania. You can run, jump, hit things with a sword, and cast a randomly-chosen spell (which is things like throwing axes, or surrounding yourself in fireballs). The goal is to collect as much treasure as possible before you die. This money is passed down to your ancestor who can use it to buy upgrades. The upgrades take the form of upgrades to your family home and gear. These are permanent updates that last throughout all generations that follow, so in the end, the game really becomes about grinding out as many updates as you can to help future generations kill the 4 area bosses (which are also permanently dead once you beat them) and finally the big bad guy.

At the end of the day, what the game is really all about is grinding. When reduced like that, it sounds terrible, but the way the game is structured makes you crave the grind. It's got a very clever design that encourages you to continue to play "just one more guy" each time you die. Since the castle is randomly-generated each time, there's always new challenges and areas to explore. The only time the game really starts to feel like a grind is toward the end. At a certain point, you're able to dispatch the first area's boss, and probably pretty close to beating the second, and at that point, you're able to put in some really long runs, where you survive for a long time and stash a whole lot of loot. You'll probably need to make quite a few of these long runs toward the end of the game before finishing off the last few bosses, and the game bogs down quite a bit. On the plus side, these long runs mean you're never lacking in things to upgrade.

I was expecting the game to require me to nearly fill out the upgrades completely in able to have a chance at the final boss. Luckily, this is not the case. I don't think I was even halfway up to the maximum in the critical areas of health, armor, damage, etc. at the time I finished the game. I was greeted with a New Game + screen after the credits, so I'm guessing the rest of the tree is needed for the second quest.

Overall, I really enjoyed the game and highly recommend it. It's currently on sale for $11.99 on Steam, (down from $14.99 normally) so now's the time to get it unless you want to wait for a cheaper price in the winter sale.

Man I've given up on clearing my backlog for the past few months. I've literally been playing nothing but Borderlands 2 (which I've already beaten) and Resident Evil 6 (which I've already beaten). I'm just really having fun with these games so I figure why force myself to play something else if I'm enjoying myself? I'll turn on the random game every now and then (Perfect Dark Zero, Dishonored, Goldeneye 007 Wii), but my interest doesn't last very long.

Does getting the new Streetpass Mii Plaza games count as individual games (-4) or as a collection (-1)? Do we even have to consider them as -1 to add to our backlog?

Really proud of my +1 for the past couple weeks; the Steam sale will likely get to me [I'm probably going to pick up Van Helsing and there are a lot of 2-3 dollar games I'm waiting on until the end of the sale] but even with all the time I spent playing Animal Crossing [an ungodly amount I will never, ever check] I managed to be positive for the past couple weeks so I'll take it.

I'm thinking I will be adding at least three bought for the next time I update with Van Helsing, Starseed Pilgrim, and Super House of Dead Ninjas, possibly a couple more [I'll probably be buying into early access on Mercenary Kings, don't know if that really counts...] so I'm feeling a sort of urgency to play more adventure games. Broken Sword didn't really connect with me a whole lot but it reminded me how I really enjoy just relaxing in adventure game worlds.

Shadow of the Colossus HD is beat. I played it once before on PS2 but that was a long time ago so I still had to figure some things out. Day 1 I beat 1-6, day 2 I beat 7-14, and tonight I did 15-16 for the win. For the last Colossus, I accidentally died en route so it started me back at the temple, then I got most of the way back when my power went out for less than 1 second which was long enough to shut my PS3 off, then I finally made it to him the 3rd time. Had to fight him a few times though and it doesn't help that it starts you ALLLLL the way back at the gate. Let's just say that last one took me waaaaaay too long. Good stuff, though. The pop-in was pretty bad, I don't remember it being that way, but I can't help but be entertained when all of a sudden a mountain appears!

Puts me at +13, for now.

Countdown at 9! The end is within grasp and the cosplay costumes are 92% done as well. Dragon's Crown is out 8/6 though and I have it preordered, so in my head I know that it'll soon be a +1 to rain on my "only 9 left" parade. I think Fable: The Journey is next. I want to completely close the book on Fable before tackling Amalur

Dust: An Elysian Tale - While the game felt a little easy in the first half, the challenge ramped up well after that and I finished the game with hardly a complaint looking back on it now. Looking forward to trying a harder difficulty someday.
Evoland - Started out enjoying this fun little project but it started getting tedious towards the end. Didn't care for the final boss either.

Currently Playing:

Rogue Legacy (Steam) - At the final boss and not having much luck. Probably will go on a few more Spelunker runs to boost some stats before focusing on him.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS) - Playing this super casually. These days I hardly have the chance to play it during optimum hours.

Ys I (Steam) - Bought Ys I and II Chronicles on the Steam sale this month and I'll include the purchase in my end of July post. I'm at the final boss of Ys I on Normal difficulty and it's a bitch.

Fable: The Journey is beat. This game is amazing! If you can forgive the sometimes spotty motion detection, an awesome experience from front to back. I'm going to make a LTTP thread, the game deserves more attention and it doesn't appear there was even an OT.

Puts me at +14, for now.

Beat (+17):
1. Barkley, Shut up and Jam: Gaiden - 1/4
2. Persona 4 (PS2) - 1/28
3. Ys: The Oath in Felghana - 2/16
4. 999 - 2/22
5. Tomb Raider - 3/9
6. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky - 3/17
7. Ico HD 4/6

14. Fable 3 - 7/6
15. Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes (XBLA) - 7/12
16. Shadow of the Colossus HD - 7/18

1. Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch - 1/22
2. Tomb Raider - 3/5
