So I have finally decided to tackle my list of mostly old RPGs that I never got around to completely playing through. I'm going to stay clear of PC games for this, because Steam is always available and doesn't require me to dig out an old console.

I'll be starting over on everything, and even broke out a CRT to use where appropriate. I have a lot of hours to get through though, but I'm looking forward to it.

I'll be kicking this off with (at the request of a friend) Dragon Quest 8 tonight, so wish me luck guys.

Boy, I sure messed up. Kind of nothing else to say. Thanks, Steam! Thankfully most of it was taken up with Steam card funds but the pain of the backlog is still there. I picked up Mercenary Kings but I'm reluctant to add it to anything until the product is officially finished.

Vintage Hero was a neat little game. From a design perspective it's maybe a little weird to add leveling progression to a Mega Man style game, since it undercuts the appeal of trying weapons on bosses; once you level up your attack it really doesn't matter which weapon you're using, and there's really only one point in the game where you even need to use the boss weapons. Some nice alterations on the Mega Man formula I'm used to though, like having miniature levels in between the inevitable capsule boss rush fights at the end.

Project X Zone is kind of a bummer because the story exists pretty much solely as justification for getting tons of characters together yet there's a ton of text, and I'm not crazy about the personality they gave the characters in the translation so at some point I started skipping the text as fast as possible to see what characters would come next and to continue enjoying the battle system. I'd love to see that combat in a tactical RPG that had its own fully considered story and world because it's a good bit of fun and has room for refinement.

I'm pretty done with Animal Crossing, I've done everything I wanted to do. There are minor things like maybe I'll check my Nintendo items every once in a while but I opened up all the special buildings I care about other than the police station and I fully upgraded my house. It's a pretty terrifying game.

I don't know what kind of progress I'll be able to make before the next update but I'm hoping for something. I'll chip away at SMT4 while working on adventure games, I think. GameFly has a tendency to ambush me with RPGs, though I'm sort of asking for it by adding tons of them to my queue. Problematically I've started following the indiegames.com blog for free stuff which won't help productivity but the nature of a lot of those games means I'll usually be done with them pretty fast at least.

So I haven't really beaten any games since my last post, although I did decide I'm close enough to the end of Forza Horizon, and have gotten enough enjoyment out of it, that I can consider myself done with it. I finally bought Super Mario Galaxy though, as I figure this is a game that I should probably play before the gen is over. I also picked up a few games and DLCs during the big XBL sale: Perfect Dark Zero (come on, it was $3) and some DLC for Borderlands 2 and Dishonored. However, I'm not going to consider the DLC purchases as new games since they're not. So I'm basically back to -1. Oh joy.

Silent Hill 2 is beat. I liked it, but found the process needed to move from room to room, area to area, really obtuse. I know which door I need to go through I just don't know where the 5 different keys/events I need to find and trigger first are.

The Swapper - Really enjoyed it even though I'm too old and impatient for really clever puzzles and FAQ'd my way through half of them.
Ys I & II Chronicles - From early on in the first one I decided to FAQ my way through both games and I don't regret a thing. The gameplay is great and I never minded grinding, but man there are some obtuse puzzles and situations where I would have been stuck and frustrated for a long time.
Rogue Legacy - Fantastic game. Just a perfect design structure for playing in short bursts coupled with brilliant hooks that make you not want to stop.

Currently Playing:

Rogue Legacy (Steam) - Beat the first boss in New Game + and have unlocked the rest of the main bonuses I wanted to unlock, such as the max amount of gold per coin drop and the least percentage of gold lost when entering the castle. The game is so fun though I'll still pop in here and there to earn enough to boost some stats.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS) - I've gone from casual to obsessed. Figured out beetle farming on the island and just unlocked the convenience store, meaning I should now have access to the catalog, so I'll be buying crap from the stores every day.

Dota 2 (Steam) - Enjoying messing around in the tutorial but I don't think I'll ever play online. I do enjoy learning about the game though by watching Daily Dota on GB. I get why people are into it. I feel like I've learned a lot about it but currently I find the large item list and upgrades a little daunting.

So I have put forward a plan for how I am going to beat my backlog. Since I never feel like playing any of my unbeaten games when I sit down to game and usually end up playing something I've already finished (Uncharted 2, Borderlands 2), I have made myself a rule:

Whenever I game, I can only play one of the two following games: The Last of Us or Metroid Prime. I cannot play any other games until I finish one of these two games.

Let's see if that helps.

That's not a bad idea, but be careful that it doesn't cause you to stop playing games altogether. Perhaps you should give yourself a broader group than 2 to choose from.

Good point. Recently I haven't really been playing any single game for more than 30-45 minutes anyway, so I figure this way I will actually devote more time to playing a single game. Plus I chose the two games in my library I am most interested in right now. If I end up not gaming at all then I will probably revise my list.

Makes sense - it's definitely a good idea to concentrate on the games you're feeling the most inspired to play.

My second negative month, but I don't feel bad that much since a lot of the games on my list are free and I was able to control myself in spending too much during the Steam Sale.

Since I was enjoying the heck out of Kingdom Rush Frontiers back in June, I decided to buy Fieldrunners 2 since I still had some leftover credits in my AppStore account. Its better than the first game too and feels more balanced. The free games I got were mostly from the App Store and also from Club Nintendo. Enjoyed the heck out of Tiny Wings, Wheres My Water? and Flight Control on my friends iPhone years ago, and I seriously couldn't pass on them now that I have my own iOS device and while they're free. Badland feels like NightSky, simple and short stages. I'm neutral with Sword & Sworcery, felt more like an adventure game inspired by Zelda and with RPG elements. I kinda enjoyed the experience though. For the Steam Sale, I limited myself to only $10 and was able to grab 4 games. With Satazius, I finally have all Nyu-Media games on Steam, crazy shmup and felt like Gradius on steroids. Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved is a no-brainer, fun twin-stick shooter. Still haven't touched Zeboyd's Rainslick 3 & 4 though. For some other games, I was actually disappointed with the Club Nintendo rewards and ended up with Sakura Samurai since its the only game that I don't have, decent action game I suppose. Chain Blaster was bought with my SMTxFE credit, I really like the scoring mechanic and I enjoyed it, but this just feels like Metal Torrent, too short and also feels expensive considering the amount of content in the game.

Shin Megami Tensei IV ate my whole gametime last month though, and I'm still not finished and will probably play the game for a week or two more. Not even sure if I'll be getting Tales of Xillia since I'm kinda short on money right now. Hopefully, I won't spend much this month.

Also forgot to mention, I also beat Darius Burst, but it was on Arcade, not sure if I should count that.

Penny Arcade Adventures Episode 2 (PC) - Pretty far into this, but I think I've still got a few hours to go. Enjoying the writing much more than Ep. 1, but I'm finding the battles just as tiresome.

New Super Mario Bros. U (Wii U) - On Meringue Clouds 1. As disappointing as the art style and the music are, this is still a really solid platformer. Quite enjoying the Miiverse integration too.

Well, I finally beat The Last of Us, which takes me back to 0. Fantastic. I'm glad I'm no longer in the negative, and I don't really see many new games on the horizon that I need to own, so I think I should be able to continue with clearing out my backlog.

TLoU is a great game, but it can get pretty intense at times. I was playing on Easy and I would dread whenever I had to fight human enemies since getting shot a few times really hurts. It's great if you want the feeling of surviving by the skin of your teeth, but I tend to prefer games that are a little more chill, so it was somewhat difficult for me to get through this. Still, I wanted to see the plot through to the end, and I was happy to do so. The story isn't as great as everyone is making it out to be, but it was fun. I think BioShock Infinite still holds its place as my favorite plot of 2013.

I'm flying out for a trip on 8/26 and want to play Okamiden on DS, so if I decide to play something before then it's gotta be beaten before that. OR I could start Okamiden now and just make sure I'm in the middle of it still. My only short game is Bioshock 2 with DLC. Either that or Plants vs. Zombies 2 which came out today, but I don't count mobile games as backloggable for the most part.

Bioshock 2 + Minerva's Den DLC is beat. Loved it! I adore Bioshock 1 but hated the gameplay. They really improved that aspect for the sequel and believe the hype about Minerva's Den being excellent DLC. I'm sad to say goodbye, Rapture. Although once my backlog is cleared and I'm buying games again, Bioshock Infinite is extremely high on my wishlist.

I'm flying out for a work meeting so I'll have some air and terminal wait time to play Okamiden on DS, so I planned it to be next. I stack my backlog horizontal on my shelf (whereas beaten games are vertical and alphabetical) so seeing it so short, only 5 games deep, really puts it into perspective. Home stretch!
