RUMOR: PlayStation Magazine has reported a number of unconfirmed news about the new model of PSP:

* Samsung has signed a contract with Sony to supply a huge quantity of 8GB Flash storage chips, which will be incorporated into the new PSP
* The 8MB storage plays a key role in downloading contents on PSP, via online or PS3
* The new PSP will have a built-in camera which should have same functions as the EyeToy
* Production costs of the new PSP will be lower than the current mode, because it will be slimmer and easier to produce
* A new configuration for the UMD slot, the game will be inserted directly into the system
* The new version of PSP is expected to launch in spring 2007

Lock if old.

god damn. shut up about a "new psp model" already! it didn't come the last 15 times they said it was coming!!

Damnit... I was just debating getting a PSP. I want Every Extend Extra so badly.

I knew about the other rumors, and that was stopping me. Now this.

Spring though? ARGH!

IMHO, the PSP would make the perfect candidate for testing out full-scale online distribution, especially with 8GB of flash. Enough with the UMDs, please.

Same shit, different day.

But the constant rumors of a PSP revision makes it one of the worst kept secrets in the industry right now. Sony needs to clear inventory of the current model first though.

Sony revised the PS1. Sony revised the PS2. It is only a matter of time before the PSP gets a revision.

The only reason I could see sony prompting for a redesign would be to curb piracy (at the hardware level) and to cut the cost of production

but seeing as how they've shipped 20million units, combined with the low sell-through they have, I don't think a redesign will happen at least for another 2 years.

Sounds like a terrible idea. Everytime a redesign rumor is started, it seems like it came out of some techie's fantasy of what they think an ideal portable should be, mainly playing pirated games and watching pirated media stored on a large internal memory.

None of which makes any sense for a real redesign made by a profit seeking corporation, which will most likely see a more compact and cheaper PSP to boost sales.

Lower overall manufacturing costs of the unit + flash prices have been crashing for a while now = cheap.

Check the prices on 8 gb of flash memory...

I understand crashing, but that's not good. Of course, Sony gets an OEM discount and stuff, but it's not cheap by any estimation.

More likely than a redesign is another Giga pack or similar. Once 4GB+ MS Duos start to fall in price there won't be a need for high capacity embedded flash memory in the PSP.

It would also make more sense not to add features to a redesign. Unless Sony is trying to pull a Sega.

People keep pointing out to PSone and PS2 redesigns none of which added new features, in fact, PS2 redesign took out HD support, which pissed ofd S-E's top brass. Hence FFXI went multiplatform and a future FF MMO may never be Sony exclusive again. I don't think Sony wants to keep making those kinds of misktaes, by + - features.

If they offered such a remodel, I'd try to trade in my old PSP toward this. 8GB of flash would be rad as hell, and a revised PSP is inevitable. But, magicbox + the idea that it'd be cheaper to produce with 8GB of flash smacks of a bit too hopeful. Still, would be awesome.

Well, where there's smoke there's fire. I think it makes sense for Sony to redesign the PSP, make it more compact and include a large built in storage to go with their new strategy. The camera and price thing sounds fishy, but they need to revise it, they do it with their consoles, and this is a handheld. It can and needs to be made better.

Well I'ill be damn! I just threw that out there!
Allegedly anyway. I agree with you that there won't be one until they drop to 65nm, if anything it's for power consumption reasons rather than cost. Should allow them to bring in 333MHz clock speeds. So I expect another battery upgrade alongside the redesign too, for the poor PSP [fat?] owners.

I can't see them putting built in flash memory in the new model. Don't they make a ton of money off memory sticks?

its gonna happen. Its inevitable.

Ill buy it at launch. I love the PSP but I want a big storage and I want it to be slimmer so it can fit better in my pocket.

It'll spice up HW sales and SW sales as well.

Only one way I'm interested in purchasing a redesign - 333 Mhz unlocked. (Better dpad would be nice too). Otherwise, I'm cool with my current model.

Of course that would mean 333 Mhz unlocked across the board new or old design if that was true since the devs themselves have to limit their games to the 222 Mhz standard.

Well, Sandisk probably does ;)

But assuming Sony gets their ducks in a row and starts offering downloadable games, demos, full-length MP4 videos and the like, even onboard space of 8 gig would fill up relatively quickly. By spring 2007, even 4 gig MS Duos could very likely hit less than $50. The combination of low pricing for Duos and space-hungry content would certainly leave supplemental storage an attractive proposition, even with embedded storage.

I've been really itching to get a PSP...I guess im gonna hold out for a bit.

:lol @ PMS...double whammy night at GAF!

Ugh, wasn't this covered in the PSM reviews thread?

Anyway, they are just reprinting the rumors from several months ago (I guess when the magazine went to press, or at least, was written).

In an interview just a couple days ago, one of the top Sony guys says:

GS: Right. Now you mentioned the PSP hardware. Now obviously there have been rumors about a PSP hardware redesign. Will Sony have any news on that front anytime soon?

KH: No, right now we're comfortable with what we have. I mean, you probably have seen some of the numbers that were included in the Q1 earnings report from Sony Corporation and as far as the platforms go. Between PlayStation, PS2 and PSP, the PSP happens to be the fastest-growing product we've ever launched. I think we cleared 20 million units worldwide within the first what, about 18 months or so. And in the US, we've already cleared 5.2 million. Again, it's only been in the market a year and five months, so we're obviously very happy with the technology we've packed into the current PSP, and we don't have any plans to redesign the PSP at this point in time.

Supposedly the reason it's held back in the current models is because it would drain battery life quickly, and generate too much heat and melt the thing so maybe current model wouldn't be the way to go there.

Well duh. Its not like Sony is gonna come out and say "Woops busted! YES WERE MAKING A psp revision which will render the old PSP obsolete so screw you all!! CLEAN UP YOUR BANK ACCOUNTS!!! BTW just to make it clear were also making PSP2 with a touch screen and PS4 with a waggle wand right now but shhhh its a secret"

What does that mean? Some kind of slot-loading drive?

Better yet, why would they actually make a PSP revision which makes the old ones obsolete? Do they want to shoot themselves in the foot even more? Especially piss off all the people who just bought one for the holidays?

Furthermore, the rumored revision doesn't even make sense. 8 Gigs of flash memory? Yeah, eventually it will be cheap, but that will still be around $100-150 in 6 months time. Slimmer? The PSP is already about as slim as it's going to get - it's not exactly thick. Any more and you'd be able to break it in half. Slot drive? What's the point? Other than people getting the UMDs stuck inside. (Other rumors have the UMDs not coming in a case anymore, and that is even sillier). And they're going to include a camera. Which somehow makes it cheaper to make.

I'm sure we will eventually see a revision, but it will be more along the lines of the DS Lite. Basically the same thing with a few tweaks. Probably tweak the analog stick a little, maybe give the screen a bit more protection somehow. But not for a while. Sony hasn't even come close to exhausting the color possibilities yet.

Yes, a lot of reports about that from the homebrew scene...
<==sarcasm

Another day another PSP redesign rumor. Anyway, if they where to do a redesign:

1) Leave the screen size intact

2) Inlude all these new addons as integrated features (camera, mic, gps), a PS3 waggle feature could be neat as would a second analouge nub. (you could implement the nub with some u-shaped reacharound snap-on deal for non PSP+ owners)

3) Better battery life, for 333Mhz mode :p </nag>

The rest I don't care as much about, though I have to say I much prefer the current UMD tray system to a slotloading job.

I'm guessing it means they'll save money by cutting out the UMD trap-door assembly, and just have a DS style slot. Presumably with some kind of spring-loaded cover that pops up when there's no UMD in place to keep the dust off the lens.

Actually, if this causes a price drop in the original PSP model I'm all for it. I don't need some fancy new one to get my kicks. I just want Ridge Racers 2 and the Mega Man games.

Only from the anonymous embellishment and FUD of anonymous internet posters. :P

People have been using full 333 Mhz for a while now especially on the emulation front and can use it for certain games for improvement like GTA:LC 30 fps to 60 fps, kills the battery pretty quickly though since GTA:LC also streams.

Basically a new better battery standard would do. Sony already released the Stamina battery with 20% longer lasting battery life a good long while ago.

This is definitely happening. I don't know about spring 2007 specifically, but they're redesigning it. I reported on it back in April ( http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/41595/ ) and my source is very reliable. The details are slightly different--ie, flash memory rather than hard drive, but flash memory makes more sense anyway. The difference is that my source claimed the new device may not use UMDs, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was changed due to impracticality.

That allmost sounds like the new multimedia device Sony released a while ago. The one that sort of looked like the PSP with 1 Gig flash on board, a slide to reveal keyboard and sans UMD. (Can't remember the name)

Are you shure there wasn't any confusion on the matter?

Yay.

Yay. PSone downloads ftw.

Not too exciting for me, but cool.

Nice.

Awesome.

Alrighty.

In short, I wouldn't mind seeing this in time for Silent Hill Origins.

I'm sure a redesign is eventually happening. Like the PSOne or PS2 slimline. But this specific rumor is BS.

As to your sites rumor, it might have been that Mylo thing from Sony he was talking about

Sill, anonymous sources really shouldn't be reported in of itself, good reporters actually do their own research on the story, dig up their own information via investigation, rather than simply just what someone elses said.

Back when I used to investigate UFOs, I had dozens (well, a few) of people tell me about Aliens they saw in freezers on government bases. Does that mean they were true? Even if they were reliable about other things? No.

Journalism is very sloppy these days.
