Wipeout 2048 is a prequel, it takes place during the advent of anti-gravity racing. Races go beyond the typical futuristic courses, running through more grounded locations like urban city streets and highways.

  • THE FACTS
  • 10 new tracks, 4 return from Wipeout HD - [EDIT - More Wipeout HD tracks in the future. The DLC will be free for those who own the game on PS3]
  • The gold, silver and bronze system is gone. You either Pass or Fail. However, you can earn an Elite Pass by acing an event. Elite can be earned on the first try or a replay
  • Touch fun: you can flick the rear screen to control speed, tap the front screen to use items or weapons and tilt the system to steer. Touch/motion controls are optional
  • If you like seizures, cockpit view is available
  • XP - which is used to increase your rank and unlock content - is universal, meaning points earned from both solo and multi play are added to the same pool
  • Head to Head, Speed Lap, Zone Mode, Time Trial and Combat events return
  • Unlocked ships can be viewed in an AR museum [EDIT - this will be added in a future update]
  • Custom soundtracks, bitch.
  • UPDATE: Wipeout HD & Fury campaigns and crossplay tracks are now available (Free for PS3 owners).

    SOLO
  • The solo campaign takes place on a "canvas" filled with nodes, you follow a path from left to right. Each node is an event. There are supposedly hidden events found in branching paths
  • It covers three seasons - 2048, 2049 and 2050. With each season, new tracks and vehicles are unlocked
  • There are 150-200 events between the three seasons

    MULTI
  • There is a multi campaign, designed with a similar node system - early stages can be beaten by simply participating in a race, but goals will become more demanding as you progress
  • 2-8 players
  • Online & ad-hoc multiplayer
  • Cross-platform online and ad-hoc play with Wipeout HD on PS3
  • Online leaderboards

    BUMMERS
  • Runs at 30 FPS :(
  • Reports of long load times before races
  • Online pass (locks out online multi)
  • No racebox mode, meaning solo play is limited to the campaign set up
  • PS3/Vita crossplay is limited to only 4 tracks
  • There are only five teams - AG Systems, Auricom, Feisar, Pir-Hana and Qirex - bad news for fans of Harimau, Mirage, Icarus, Assegai, EG-X, Goteki 45, and Triakis

DJ Izamura (spelling it wrong, I know) mentioned something about a possible patch for load times.

This is only 1 week away. You can almost taste it.

Game is crack! And of course you use cockpit view. Unplayable for me otherwise.
Vita owners, buy this!

The future has just arrived for those already packing Vitas and haven't nabbed a JPN version yet, given that it's now just gone up on US PSN.

i'm confused as to whether i should be bummed about the return to wider tracks. wipeout fusion wasn't exactly the greatest game but a few of the tracks were quite amazing to zip through, especially when you had to dodge obstacles such as rocks but those moments were quite rare given that there were possibly only 2 or 3 memorable tracks that didn't sacrfice the delicate play style required in a wipeout title. atleast i assume the wider tracks will suite the fact that it is a portable title.

also the game looks so fucking hot. i can't believe i'm tossing nearly 400 just to have it in my hands. kill me

Cross platform play, even though limited to 4 tracks, should be fun. Looking forward to some BT headset chat runs on Vita though.

Really looking forward to this. Wipeout Pure was my first PSP game, and the intro to that game was really special to me. Coming straight from GBA, it was like a bold proclamation in my head: "This is the future." That 4-inch screen was incredible.

And then the load times >_< But the good has to come with a little bad.

I don't think any system will ever come close to the initial "WOW"-factor, the overall impact that playing the PSP for the first time did. It was a cool breeze, sleek and confident and drool-worthy, everything that Vita should be at this point but doesn't yet seem like. Nothing came close at the time, and even something like the Dreamcast wasn't as impressive if you were an arcade nut like me.

Local ad-hoc crossplay is what blows my mind. I can have a friend over, and have him on the PS3 and me on the Vita, or vice versa, and we can duke it out. Pretty neat stuff.

Title fixed.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
HD threw me off the horse, and the achievement list for this doesn't look too good either. I think I'll get this later down the line whenever I get a PSP2 but I'm intimidated since HD.

Aww yeah. Just played my first race. Where can we provide PSN id's to add to friend lists?

I'll be there Day One

. I cannot wait to be able to play this, despite having three other Wipeout titles I can play right now.

If anyone wants to celebrate launch with some online matches, add me (PSN = GAF user name).

It's called progress, man. After getting the taste of the sweet nectar that is 60fps HD and Fury, who'd wanna go back?

Fury barely runs at 60. And 3D should be considered further progress for the series (it's incredible - probably the best 3D game on the PS3 so far) and guess what - it runs at 30fps when in 3D. It's not detrimental to the experience at all.

Anyway, for the trophy whores... don't know if it's been mentioned yet but there's another Beat Zico trophy to kill yourself over. -_-

I think i only have 5 events left to get the Elite pass on in the main campaign. I'm really enjoying this one.

needs moar info. Tracks and teams

The tracks haven't been showcased individually yet, as far as I have seen. We know there about 10 new tracks, that's about it. Maybe you could piece them all together with youtube videos, but who wants to do that.

I listed the five teams in WO2048, I don't see any need to elaborate on them.
