How about some more Knytt Stories?

I love this game alot. I know there are fellow Gaffers that also love it. If you're not aware, this indie platformer was recognised as one of the best indy games last year. 2D, straight to the point, incredible ambiance + a very easy and effective level editor.

Now like with all games with the ability to play user created levels it doesn't take you 3 days to figure out most stuff people do absolutely suck. Here today i want (try) to show you that THERE ARE people that actually are dedicated and make good stuff. I just finished my own level and uploaded it for you Knytt Stories fans to play.

I've been working (in spare times) on this since last september and i dedicated LONG HOURS to make it good and polished. In fact i could still be there working on it more but sometimes you have to know where to stop. I truly hope you have as much fun playing it that i had fun creating it!

Notes of interest:

- This level is NOT trying to be "another Nifflas style level". It's a challenge level that is semi-linear, with a story and with a similar backtracking style to Super Metroid.

- Absolutely no luck is required to play this level. Only skillfull challenges to be found.

- Every single tileset is custom and new.

- This level is having it's own soundtrack of all original music by. Give a high five to fellow GAF member "Oneself" who composed it

- It's having it's own tutorial mode.

- There's multiple secrets and endings.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Selectable difficulty levels:

Pro-Knytter -- This is the intended difficulty and level design.

Weaksauce -- Challenges are toned down. Power-up placement is a bit different (to make things easier). Secrets are NOT easier to find.

KnyttLevels.com:Do not download the one on this website -- the game is not bug free there.

Low-Fi version (music is mono.)

Sendspace: http://www.sendspace.com/file/6qgaa3
KnyttLevels.com:Do not download the one on this website -- the game is not bug free there.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Known issues.

-The version called "final 03" (and all other versions there) on the knyttlevels.com website is bogus. I mean, it's not corrupted but there are still bugs. The website is so badly manageable that i stopped updating the version there. I'll update a version on that website the day it becomes half usuable. Sorry.

Enjoy! Please leave your comments or bugs in this thread. tks alot!!

Didnt download it yet, but does it have awesome ambient music? I dont know this Matthieu Gauthier.

The soundtrack is quite ambient yeah. It's hard to describe. I didn't want it to be cliché ambient, it's experimental a bit more. Anyhow, Matt is talented and i agreed to give away his Email address if ever his music sounds good to some ears.

Every platformer fans should try it, it's awesome. I'd say it's a little hard if you aren't used to Knytt though.

And if you guys are tired of shitty videogame soundtracks, lend a ear to this one. ;P

Beat it some minutes ago. You got my respect, that level was awesome.
Especially the
Red Manor
.

I enjoyed the music too. Enhanced the atmosphere greatly!

Bumping to see if there's more Knytt fans during week day.

tks for the impressions by the way mr Indeed. If my level made one happy player, i'm all good. :)

I could never get past one of the default Knytt Stories quests, so I quit playing. Totally forgot how cool these are.

Well, maybe there are people that don't really know how to do it so...

1- In order to play the level, you need Knytt Stories installed first. (takes 2 mins really).
2- When it's done you open it (duh) and go in the install new level section.
3- Now it's as easy as drag and dropping The Life Ruby.bin file in the window.

.

Cool, i'll be downloading this :) I've been making my own level for a while, but I suck at art so i'm having to use the standard tilesets, still it's got custom music though - hopefully playing your level will inspire me to finally finish mine.

Just finished the games normal ending I think, was pretty good. The only real complaint I have is that I wish there were more save points after some of the more difficult rooms. So frustrating after 10-20 attempts to get past one room only to end up in another difficult room without a save point when I get there. FUCK! Other than that tho it's awesome. :D

As for Graphics and Audio, they are top notch, probably the best of all the 3rd party levels I've tried.

Also haven't been able to find the purple key yet, arggg. I have all the items except for the eye. Any tips?

Well, i thought that having a save point in every room was cheap and not really rewarding the player's effort. This is why there's a save point every 2 screens. Sometimes it's 3 screens long without seeing a save point but in that case one of the 3 screens is safe or super easy. Thanks ALOT for feedback by the way. :)

Oh and here's a tip for ya:

Do you have the item that lets you read the tablets? Tablets will give you hints in order to find the secrets sections. Finding all the stuff will lead you to another ending.
That's my hint for now. Tell me when you find more stuff. :P

Yea I have that

EDIT:
Just found the switch that turns on the light for Yuree's caves. That was nicely done, can't believe I didn't think of using the umbrella there before.

Have gotten a little further
found the eye and got the purple key, made my way through the lab (the graphics in this area is amazing, i love it), got the suit and I'm now stuck again at the password room with the hint about the continents, just can't figure it out.

Ok. This one was the hardest challenge to overcome, you needed all items and secrets to reach that. You only missed 2 little details:
There's 2 "kind" of tablets. Some are informative only and there's one per area that look more "important". Those tablets cannot be accessed without an item (like a key) and they always have fire pots on each sides. You will notice they also give a message that doesn't make much sense or isn't really related to the level. Those tablets are actually telling you the combination. It's some kind of riddle if you wish.

Also, there's a spirit in Hall of Souls secret section that will give you a hint about the riddle.

If ever you still can't figure it out, gimme a high five again and i'll tell you.

Thanks for the tip, was able to figure it out.

How do I
get across the whole row of red locks in the Halls of Souls? Do I need another item? The only items I don't have yet are the one on the other side and the last key.

Here's a couple of tips:
You can reach the item before collecting the red key. In your situation right now it would be to jump carefully with the Umbrella though. If you hold the jump key, the Umbrella will hover a little further. Another tip i can give you is that when you jump with the Umbrella open, your jump is reduced in height -- try to open the Umbrella only when you want to hover.

Didn't know
holding jump made you float a bit more
, thanks. Managed to make it and then subsequently beat the game. This is probably my favourite custom level so far.

Cool, I'm downloading it now. I tried a few custom levels early in the game's lifetime, but all the ones I played sucked. I'm glad yours has original music, because I got sick of hearing the same default songs in everyone's custom levels.

To have played MANY user levels myself, most people don't get their stuff together or they try to make a level that is like the game creator's one instead of doing their own thing. Anyways, i tried to make things a bit different and more original there (and still respecting what Knytt Stories is). I hope you like. :D

I just broke your level. :lol

Bugged through a wall, fell through purple shit for about 30 seconds, then "found" the Life Ruby. Then started falling through purple shit again. Wacky!

That sounds like a good bug. Can you tell (show) me where and how to do this?

Man, I tried to get into Knytt/Knytt Stories, but I just couldn't get the controls down. I'd want the up arrow to be jump AND climb.

I didn't like the keyboard controls either. So I started using my 360 controller with joy2key and it makes the game so much more enjoyable for me.
