Dragon Age: Inquisition patch 2 live [Warning: issues w/ PC ver - temp fix post #386]

It's liiivveee

Update: Patch 2 Hotfix now live for PC

We have implemented a hotfix for Patch 2 on PC to address graphical issues our players have been experiencing. This fix ensures that the graphics settings are working correctly for everyone; however, players who are using lower graphics settings will notice changes to the visuals they are used to.

Before Patch 2, released December 9, shader quality for all PC users was being forced to run at Ultra. This impacted the performance of low-end machines and caused some unintended visual artifacts for users whose mesh quality was set lower than Ultra. As a result, users with Low or Medium mesh settings saw hair that was shinier than expected.

We attempted to address this in Patch 2 by binding the two settings so that mesh and shader quality were always the same. However, this fix wasn't properly implemented, and it forced shader quality to Low. We provided a command-line workaround Tuesday, but that still required players to ensure that the new shader quality matched their mesh settings.

This hotfix will correctly bind the mesh and shader settings and eliminate this issue. However, now that shader quality is being set correctly for everyone, players using lower settings will notice a decrease in the quality of visuals. This includes the removal of some features such as scars and freckles.

Most notably, the lower settings do not support blending of the age layer, so some users may notice that their Inquisitor (or custom Hawke) has aged considerably. And while this change is how it was originally intended to work, it could be understandably frustrating for people who created their characters before Patch 2.

If you would like to correct this change, you can set your mesh quality to High or Ultra. This will enable features that are disabled on lower settings, but may impact your framerate and performance.

We're sorry for any stress or confusion this may have caused, and we thank the community for helping us quickly identify and address this issue.

We're working on getting a hot fix out for the PC graphics issue as soon as possible. In the meantime, here is a workaround you can try:

To start, make sure the quality setting you choose is equal to the setting set for Mesh Quality inside Options>Graphics

You will need to add a new command line parameter. To do this:

Through Origin:
Right click on the Dragon Age Inquisition title
Go to game properties
Type the command line parameter in the Command Line Properties box.
Through shortcut:
Right Click Shortcut
Go to Properties
Under target go to the end of the field and type the command line parameter into the box
Once there, add the following command line parameter: -ShaderSystem.ShaderQualityLevel <quality setting>
In this instance, <quality setting> should be one of the following:
Ultra
High
Medium
Low
An example of how to set your quality to high would be: -ShaderSystem.ShaderQualityLevel High

Please note that once the hot fix is out, you will need to go back in and remove this workaround from your command line.

It’s also important to note that pre-patch 2, all users on PC were being forced to use the Ultra shader quality. This means that those of you playing on lower settings will notice a decrease in quality, particularly players using low or medium settings.
To achieve the same visuals as pre-patch, users on lower settings will need to change their settings to Ultra, which should likewise be used in conjunction with Ultra mesh quality. Mismatching the mesh and shader settings will result in other visual artifacts like overly shiny hair.
Please be aware that changing settings to Ultra may impact performance on some machines.

Sorry about any frustration this may have caused.

Guess I'll post here as well:

I never updated to the last patch and I'm not unable to update to this new hotfix. My patch shows up as 276.34 MB but it quickly stalls. 60 MB is as far as I can get before the patch bombs and Origin forces me to restart it.

Origin must be messed up right now. The hotfix downloads at an extremely slow pace and once it hits 71MB it stops and then gives me a "Cannot download update" error.

the fix should be a 17mb download. that sounds like the actual patch that went out yesterday.

yo wtf...30gb update? why am i redownloading the game again? wtf bioware

edit: nm, 370mb first and now 17mb. so is the game fixed?

I've been using Steam since it launched. The absolute worst I've seen there is a stalled download. Or maybe a forced repair if a patch downloaded incorrectly. I've never seen a patch fail as it was downloading, forcing me to restart the update. That's happened to me six times now with this patch. Currently chugging along at 249 bytes per second.

Has BioWare said anything about the really bad stuttering Patch 2 introduced, seemingly mostly on Nvidia cards?

Game was fine framerate wise before on my 970 but the stuttering and hitching is awful now.

So the hotfix is up huh? nice! I haven't touched the game since patch 2 went live after reading the comments on PC issues. On the plus side I did get to finally play some Far Cry 4 and Games of Thrones EP1. Now I can go and beat this game tomorrow :D

Had the same thing but a reboot fixed it. Now my performance is identical to what I was seeing pre-patch (this is on a 970).

Getting a bunch of hitching on PS4 since patch, especially in Haven. Anyone else see this?

Are the graphical bugs fixed for everyone who downloaded the hotfix?

I never downloaded the broken patch. After updating to the hotfix, everything looks fine. None of the crazy shiny hair or the other low quality effects.

It seems identical for me as well. GTX 770. The occasional cutscene animation stuttering is still there, though, and in the same cutscenes as before.

Loot pings showing up on the minimap is a gamechanger, BTW.

Downloaded the fix and I've crashed twice on the character creator due to a DirectX error. Both times it was after a fair amount of customization. Never happened before the patch. I've got an Nvidia card.

I've gotten tons of DirectX crashes pre-patch with an Nvidia card, so this is nothing new. The patch could be exacerbating things though, I don't know.

Yikes, I already downloaded the patch and played for a few hours. Aside from still being stuck with a British accent (which I've grown fond of) and shiny hair, everything else is the same.

Same here.

Minus the shiny hair and british accent of course. I'm just glad they know im a guy now.

Got through character creation on the third try. Played the first hour or so, the game feels like it's running a heck of a lot smoother than it was before. And seeing pinged items on the radar is a godsend. I think I'll enjoy my second playthrough.

I've been seeing this bug since Patch 2 where the dialogue options won't show. I'll interact with an NPC, it'll do the camera zoom and then I can immediately move freely again. Only way to fix it is restarting the game client.

I just downloaded patch 2, but now Origin refuses to download the hotfix. It says "game update available" but when I try to install it it says the game is up to date. What do?

edit: Nevermind. I tried "repair game", it worked.

Does this patch fix the cutscene stutter?
What is the stutter like? Is it micropauses making things look less smooth, or temporary freezing that breaks up things completely?

I can never figure out if my game is suffering from microstutters.
Maaaan game is out for delivery, just did the keep thing. I'm excited

But did you complete the Last Court? It would be quite the Shame if you didn't.

Anyways, brace yourself. There's a whole lot of Dragon Aging to be had.

For those interested, Nvidia released a "hotfix" 344.80 driver. Apparently there have been some conficting reports but, in my machine the patch coupled with this driver has definitely improved performance (Specially at Skyhold).

http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3607/~/geforce-hotfix-driver-344.80

I reccommend you to try and see for yourselves.

I just tried that and oh boy, did that REALLY tank my performance. The stutter post Patch 2 was annoying but playable but holy cow, that 344.80 hotfix driver made the game unplayable for me. Barely hitting 30 fps and stuttering down to the single digits.

In my case, cutscene stutter shows up as the character models moving at a significantly lower framerate than normal. Graphics settings and resolution don't affect it at all. Here's the really strange part:

There's a cutscene about an hour in to the game in which Cassandra argues with some cleric guy at a table. That one cutscene always stutters for me. It looks like the character models are running at 15 FPS instead of 30, which is the usual framerate for Inquisition cutscenes.

Now, if I start the game with those command line switches to enable 60 FPS cutscenes, the character models still stutter along at ~15 FPS but the snow that's falling behind them is clearly running at 60 FPS.

That's so bizarre. (To be fair, I've never understood variable framerate in games.)

Thanks for the info!

What a piece of my ass this update is. I've had it on hold for a while now, but I thought since I'm almost done the game, I'll try it out. The game won't even launch now, says there's an update available, I click update, it says ready to launch, and then it doesn't, nothing happens. I tried repairing the game, it gets to 100% and then fails. This freaking blows...

Fixing bugs is great, but nerfing classes in a single player game after release is fucking stupid.
Nah, I'd like to play KE eventually but not in its un-nerfed state. I'd like to play a class who's special conceit is an additional layer of tactical options, not a one-note instant win button. To the people who say nerfing in a single player game is pointless, just don't patch.
