Why are pc gaming peripherals so obnoxious?

A mouse is considered a gaming peripheral?

What ever happened to Hands On Throttle And Stick flight controls? Pedals? Razor Hydra?
First thing I thought of, and I related straight away. Flight sticks / joysticks tend to be obnoxious, over-stylised monstrosities. I wish I could get one that would sit inconspicuously on my desk, like the PCjr style of old. But everything is a giant desk vibrator. An Xbox controller is my only option.

-Killer™ LAN E240

Killer LAN is in a lot of other motherboards. My MSI motherboard has a Killer LAN card. It looks like it may be normal at some point like with Realtek HD Audio. At least with the "high-end" motherboards.

I actually like the program it comes with, however. It allows me to throttle certain programs or block their connection altogether. I know other programs can do this too - I just thought it was convenient.

Fatality (not gonna type that out) branded stuff has been out for a while. It started with sound cards or a headset I believe.

My recommendation is the Logitech G500. Solid as a rock and does everything I ask of it. The G502 is supposed to be great as well but I haven't used it.

I use this mouse. Its pretty bad-ass.

LOVE this mouse. It offers a lot of utility (especially for MMOs) but it's also super comfy to use since I have larger hands. Honestly I'd recommend it even if you didn't play any MMOs.

a lot of stupid shit being said in this thread. did you guys know that there are peripherals out there that dont have glow sticks attached to them and dont look like running shoes? yeah, its crazy.

You can turn off the colors for most of the mice/keyboards if they come with software.

I agree most of it looks stupid.

Been using the same Deathadder since 2010, it's been a great mouse.

Yeah, obnoxious gamerz shit is exhausting to wade through.

I keep going back to Logitech though. Maybe it's just because, you know, Logitech is your dad's PC peripheral company, so I kind of grew up with it and never gave another brand any serious use, but I've just seen no reason to stop using Logitech products. Love their mice, keyboards, and speakers. Their gamepads aren't bad either, but there's little reason to use them now that 360/XB1 controllers are a thing. Their wireless PS2 controller was my go-to back in the day.

My recommendation is the Logitech G500. Solid as a rock and does everything I ask of it. The G502 is supposed to be great as well but I haven't used it.

Yup, great product. I might try the 700 next.

I always see this mouse and then feel like 12 thumb buttons is some pretty chuckle-worthy overkill.

It's not in MMO's and some FPS titles. You can put individual weapons on the thumb keys and so long as you are used to the size of that many buttons on the side it's beneficial for not moving your WASD up to select a gun or something.

Im not sure if you understand how easy this is to achieve. You guys are just remembering the most advertised products out there.

Nah, I get you.

Problem is we live in a world where reviews matter. Are there products being made based on the description that I typed out. Sure.

....but you're asking me to take a chance on a product that hasn't been consumed by the masses yet.

it's sort of gamble at this point. Take a chance on a product with no reviews or roll the dice on a product that's been reviewed favorably?

It's discontinued, all good mice are. I had Microsoft Habu that lasted me around 5 years.
In recent years I haven't had mice that has lasted me more than year. SteelSeries and Razer have the worst build quality, either the wheel goes berserk or buttons start double-clicking when clicked once, and I'm not only one with these problems as you can find lots of threads with same problems.
Currently using the cheapest mouse I could find with 2 buttons and wheel, took while to get used to it but I don't want to be buying these 100 euro mouses yearly.
That bad, huh? I'm aware of Razer's buils problems, but I had no ideas other manufacturers were affected as well. Pwrsobally still usiing my MX518 that I bought near launch. Thousands upon thousands of hours later and it honestly works still like on the first day. No sensor issues, no double-klick issues. Perfection in mouse form, best money I ever spent.

About the sensei raw, great mouse for gaming but the wheel scroll drives me nuts. So I bought a cooler master alcor, I don't care about how my mice look though.

I regret that I sold my MX518 after "only" 2 years of use. It was tad bit small for my hand but definitely better than anything I've had after it.
Deathadder is probably most comfy mice there is but you have to be really lucky for it to even last a year without any problems.
Hell, I don't even play that much games on mice and they still break in record time.

Just get a Logitech mouse, OP, you won't need anything else.

I too have noticed the increasing volume of PC gaming peripherals: rainbow individually backlit keyboards, that transforming pneumatically operated computer case that went viral last week, lights and glowing in watercooling rigs, gaudy headphones and headsets. a bit much.

Yeah, I hate those kind of stuff.
Kids these days...

Nah i've found it incredibly useful for pretty much any game. You can pretty much leave your hand on wasd at all times with a 15 button mouse. I'll even use it for Ableton to set various key mappings and (with the naga epic) just carry the wireless mouse with me when I move to my different musical stations and essentially have all the controls of the program I need (record, play, metronome on/off.... ect) without having to direct the mouse to those buttons.

I guess I'm really lucky. My Deathadder 2013 is still going strong 2 years later.

Still using MX518. Its my 5th or 6th one (first being MX510). They all lasted a year or two of abuse on average but my last one has been going strong for over 5 years now. Havent found a mouse I'd ever consider replacing it with.

CH still makes some of the best quality ones you can buy.

Silly 'gamer' branded PC parts/peripherals isn't a new thing. Actually it's more of a trending thing now, especially with 'esports' being big now. I still remember when Fata1ity branded headsets and sound cards were a thing

A lot of my stuff has 'gamer' branded non-sense on it, even though they're good products. For example, my MSI Z87-G45 mobo has a fucking dragon on it for whatever reason

I like to keep it simple with my peripherals though. My CM Quickfire Rapid and Zowie FK are both really simplistic looking devices.

EDIT: nvm, better recommendation, from below, Steelseries Sensei RAW:

$32.99 on Amazon right now.

How big is this? My hands aren't especially big (at all) and the Razer Deathadder I have is somewhat uncomfortable. Also, it has a problem with multiple clicks, and I'm thinking I'd rather just get a new mouse instead of trying to deal with the returns process on the deathadder. I got a warranty on it, but it's a pain in the ass.

I had this problem when looking for a new mouse also, I love white lights on my peripherals, but only the really expensive mice seemed to do them or they had white lights but the whole damn mouse lit up, otherwise it was the usual colours. Finally found after what seemed weeks of searching this beauty on sale for £15. Also fits in really well with my keyboard and wireless charger.

As soon as it arrived I ordered more as backups as it's everything I want in a mouse, I don't game much either on PC so don't need the best of the best.

This is what I use

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CBQO930/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Nice and simple. you can set the 4 colors to different dpi settings and in the menus you can swap the buttons around.
I don't play shooters and play other games with a controller so I can't speak for it as a gaming mouse, but as an everyday mouse it's fairly comfy and cheap.

With updates it can be set to 4k dpi - http://www.ianker.com/support/98AN2000-BA

No offense Kolma but this is excatly what I'm trying to avoid. Let me click on some gamer shit without lighting bolts on it. I promise my dick won't go limp on first click.

I have this same keyboard!
Also.. that mouse looks wonderful :O

It's a great keyboard, I'm on my second one after someone spilled beer all over mine, found someone selling brand new ones on ebay for £25 because they where Italian layout, bought it, swapped the keys from my old one and bam!

Yeah the mouse is exactly what I had in mind when I was searching for a new one, couldn't believe when I seen it!

At least a lot of mice and keyboards coming out nowadays let you turn off their LED's.

It's designs like the R.A.T mice that need to die in a fire.

I consider myself a console gamer and just built myself a PC in the last month (albeit, still waiting for just the right deal to pop up to upgrade my GPU). It occurred to me how odd the aesthetic and naming schemes are for PC components, which would obviously seem off-putting to the console gaming audience. I have no doubt the Logitech G502 mouse is certainly ergonomic, but the layman would be scared to put his hands on it because it has sharp angles. ASRock "Fatal1ty Killer" motherboards and "Razer BlackWidow" keyboards are not names that would appeal to the general public in any way. As someone just entering this demographic, there seems to be a real untapped market to make these things more inviting to the general consumer.

It really is just odd how PC peripheral makers keep going for that "GREEN GOO EXTREME" aesthetic.

Who likes that shit? I can assure you that I am a lifelong gamer and I think it looks like trash. Must be something about the PC gaming and modding community.

I was shopping around for a new laptop for the first time in a few years recently. I wanted something with at least a decent GPU so I trawled through a lot of "gamer" laptops.

Jesus Christ. It was like being in some kind of bizarre time warp where the Mid-90s Xtreme™ aesthetic never went out of vogue.

At least they're not as bad as they were some years ago. Less lime green LEDs and general aesthetic designed to impress 10 year olds.

It's basically the perfect size for me. It's about as big as the xornet, fits very comfortably in the hand. It's not super compact but it is on the smaller end as far as gaming mice go. I don't have a ruler, but it appears to be about 5.5 inches long and 3 inches wide or so.

Also the software you use with the mouse is great, two customizeable DPI settings to change on the fly with a huge range, ability to remap buttons, turn off the LED, change its flash pattern and color.

Thanks for the response.

I'll look into this!

Some bad mice in here, yikes. Don't buy that Redragon, OP. It has lots of positive reviews because it's cheap and Amazon reviewers don't know anything about mice.

If you want to go cheap-ish, the Sensei Raw is a good recommendation.

If you have a small hand, the Logitech G304 has the best sensor on the market right now and must be on sale on Amazon, because it's only $40. It's definitely on the smaller side.

Huh so Razer reliability issue is not just limited to fightsticks

Is the crosshair button a hax key for CSGO?

It's called the sniper button. It pretty much slows down the DPI speed for better aiming..I just use it as a different key such as to jump lol..I'm weird like that but I like having the jump button binded to my mouse. I should also add you can remap any button on the mouse to any key.

I was going to suggest the Logitech G400 (less vulgar looking successor to the flawless MX518) but it looks like Logitech has replaced it with something more gamer-ish looking. Might be able to still get one on ebay though. Fantastic mouse.

I actually like how the 518 looks though I'm using a G400 with the MX518 casing.

Ha, I like this admittedly stupid asthetic. It's endearingly retro-futurist in an old cyberpunk sort of way. Fuck apple and samsung. I want my stupid glowey mice and translucent plastic electronics. The late 90s kid in me demands it. These things are toys (well, at least when I'm using a mouse for gaming). I like to be reminded of that.

I would have looked down on it in the 90s, too. I was aspiring for my technology to look sleek and classy like Sony stuff or whatever back then... And I would say me and my people won the product design culture wars!

..everywhere but PC gaming stuff, I guess.

g400-user represent! I use it both at home and at work, got 2 brand new ones stashed in my closet for when / if they break down.

Yeah, modern electronics design is objectively better than the prevailing aesthetics of the mid to late 90s and it should probably be the standard for PC accessories rather than this, again, admittedly silly looking stuff.

I just hope that there continue to be some kind of weird "ugly" looking alternatives for me going forward.
