I know the 3 big Ghibli movies (Mononoke, Spirited Away and Moving Castle). I also like "the girl that jumped through time" because of the adorable characters.
I love steampunk. And stuff like Haibane Renmei, but awesome storywriting like death note as well.

Recommend me Anime-films or short (up tp 30 episodes at max) that I could enjoy. Im not into sci-fi.

whisper of the heart
only yesterday
porco rosso
laputa - castle in the sky

5 centimeters per second
voices of a distant star

Soo.. why do people like Ponyo?

I liked Howls, Spirited away etc. but Ponyo was just crap yo.

And the animation wasnt very good either as if Miyazaki didnt put much work into that either.

Watch all of the other Ghibli movies. I actually felt that Howl's was one of Miyazaki's weaker efforts (it was still good, though). You really can't go wrong with any of them.

My Neighbor Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service
Nausicaa
Castle in the Sky
Ponyo
Porco Rosso
Whisper of the Heart

...all great

As for series, FLCL is only six episodes, and it's pretty fantastic.

is that any good? i saw a thread back then when it was announced, but seemed more aimed at younger kids.
Ponyo is definitely aimed at kids, but it's still a pretty outstanding movie. Same with Totoro and Kiki. Amazing, amazing family films.

If you're ever feeling really good about yourself - like you're on top of the world - this one will bring you back down to Earth.

Great movie, but easily the most depressing film I've ever seen, animated or otherwise.

ITA with all of the praise for all of the Ghibli stuff. Some is better than others, of course, but almost all of them are great films.

would be kind of you give a short content-overview in a few words, its hard to make google searches for every recommended movie.

edit: ah thanks, i also watched gotf and my neighbour

I thought it was awesome, well yes, the story seems a bit childish, but only because it makes you feel like a child living an adventure bigger than life, loved every second.

Also, I would say ponyo is like a mix of spirited away and howls moving castle, with a world as fantastic as spirited away and with a love story more innocent than the one of howls moving castle, its simplicity blew me away:)

Well, I would wholeheartedly recommend Miyazaki's other films (note my avatar) including Lupin the Third, but that ground's been covered.

So as for other Studio Ghibli films: I'd try Grave of the Fireflies and Whisper of the Heart.
And for non-Ghibli, there's Metropolis which was screeplayed by Katsuhiro Otomo, the author of Akira

I'll only recommend one show as well: Time of Eve. It's movie length (~90 minutes in 6 episodes,) and it it can be viewed in full here: http://www.crunchyroll.com/library/Time_of_Eve

Howl's is probably one of Miyazaki's worst, so anything else he's done is also worth watching.

Nausicaa blew me away, and Kiki's is a lot of fun. Porco Rosso is good (not great), but is also worth watching.

Ghost in the Shell is awesome as well, but might not be up your alley. If you like Blade Runner, give it a shot.

The Robot Unicorn Attack thread in the gaming section has given me unicorns on the brain, so I feel obligated to mention this one.

Last_unicorn.jpg

It's not an anime per se, but it was animated by Topcraft, a Japanese studio that was later hired by Miyazaki to work on Nausicaa and eventually formed the basis of Studio Ghibli.

Here's the first six minutes on YouTube.

I also highly recommend the book, which is one of the best and most unique fantasy novels I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Definitely a classic.

Im going to say watch other miyazaki movies (except Ponyo, it sucks) but Princess Mononoke is my favorite...and Spirited Away is always a fan favorite

Like it has been said before, just about every Ghibli movie is worth it.

Paprika is also very good...man, the parade...I'll never forget the parade!

Also, make sure to see every Ghost In The Shell movie and the series. First, the original movie, then the Stand Alone Complex series. After that, watch the second movie, Innocence. Then, go on with Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG, and finally the third movie, Solid State Society = Cyberpunk masterpiece.

Another recommendation would be Metropolis. Of course there are dozens of excellent animes out there...for something completely different I'd recommend Ninja Scroll as well....Akira, Jin-Roh, Sky Crawlers, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust...and so on

this is one of my favourite movies ever. the characters are just so memorable. and the soundtrack is unbelievably melancholic and awesome. really poetic and artistically rich.

crazy, i just rented this dvd last night. I saw it in the theaters way back in 2004. It's a fun movie, I like karushifaa or however you say it in English.

Kiki's delivery service is good. And of course grave of fire flies and totoro are probably the biggest must sees.

Havent seen ponyo, but I haven't heard anybody say anything good about it.

but why? i thought it was full of interesting metaphors and a lot of character development. the setting is brilliant and the scare-crow is such a great idea (ok, the whole "oh hai, im a prince" thing was dumb, but i ignore that)

Isn't it awesome? I've loved it since I was a little kid, but it wasn't until about two or three years ago that I discovered the Ghibli connection, which has made me love it even more.

It's a beautifully sad yet hilarious and irreverent film. It captures the spirit of the book wonderfully (which I guess isn't too much of a surprise, considering Peter S. Beagle wrote the screenplay).

I liked it quite a lot when it came out a few years ago, even though it's definitly not in the same league as the Ghibli productions.

The strange concentration of Ponyo hate in this thread is disturbing.
Kino's Journey is excellent. It's kinda steampunk, but the main draw is the kaleidoscope of characters Kino encounters. Short and sweet, too.

Most people's beefs seem to be that they don't get Sophie's aging and de-aging and the stuff that happens in the second half keeps coming out of nowhere. I really liked it too, but it's true that if
the palace witch had not had the ending scene where it basically implies that she "arranged" the war to teach a lesson to Howl it wouldn't confuse so many people
.

And this simply can't be hated.

Lots of people in threads like this suggest Porco Rosso, but I didn't like it... :\
Agree with this, Porco Rosso is my very least favorite Studio Ghibli film. I also wasn't a fan of Ponyo (even though going in I knew it was geared towards a younger audience, and I loved My Neighbor Totoro which was as well).

I loved Howl's Moving Castle, reminded me alot of Spirited Away which is my all-time favorite movie. Pretty much every other film i'd recommend has already been mentioned.

yeah. my only complaint is, that some decisions sophie made seem unreasonable. why did she
put calzipher (?) out of the castle, even though she knew it would destroy the castle

Also, Nausicaa was incredible. Must See.
I've seen Tales from Earthsea, bu I don't remember it that much. I think it was alright, but nothing special.

it's about a nerdy math genius that is secretly in crush with a girl that's a year older than him and being thrust into her weird family all the same time there was this cyber network that is being invaded and causing havoc to japan and him and the family has to unite and combat the unknown in cyber space... yea.. i don't what the hell i'm talking about, i watched it without any subs.

All the Miyazaki movies

Plus:
The cat returns
Whispers of the Heart

Also:
Voices from a distant star. It's sci-fi but trust me. It's great.

And if you like the movie you should really read the book. It's way better.

Miyazaki movies are all good, but some will speak more to you than others.

My personal favorites

Laputa
My Neighbor Totoro
Princess Mononoke
