Web version of Miiverse coming in April/May?

https://twitter.com/GameplayDev/status/317059257478549505

Fun to hear Kiyoshi Mizuki speak about Miiverse's creation, game integration, and future additions. Web version available April/May.

Coming from Brian Davis, from Next Level Games (go buy Luigi's Mansion 2 now!).

The producer of Miiverse, Kiyoshi Mizuki said during a talk at the Game Developers Conference that the Miiverse mobile and web browser app should be available by May and will, at first, provide basic Miiverse functionality, like posting comments, drawing doodles, and viewing and engaging with communities.

Does this mean you can log-in from different locations? Possible fix to the account system in the works?

A 3DS version of Miiverse is also in the works, although a release date was not confirmed. Mizuki said unlike the Wii U, on which all games have Miiverse support, there will be existing games and apps on the 3DS that won't be Miiverse compatible.

Didn't expect all games to support it.

Mizuki said the company is currently taking requests from game developers for what they would like to see in the update Miiverse API.

Interesting.

Web version = 3DS version :O

Wish it was, but the 3DS browser is shit compared to the Wii U's and smartphone's.

I'm guessing a Direct gets announced as soon as in a couple of hours. All these recent bits of news have me thinking we're about to get an info dump.

Wait, even if all 3DS games weren't built for in-game Miiverse integration, they should still all have their own communities, right? I mean, why wouldn't they?

Web version of Miiverse = Screenshots on Miiverse = Screenshots in-game on your computer

Having the ability to share and store Miiverse screenshots will be a blessing.

Luigi's Mansion 2 is the first 3DS game to get a community but we have no idea if this is the start of 3DS communities or just tying in with the whole Year of Luigi thing.

Yeah, they'll have communities for sure. I would imagine you just won't get sent to the right one from within the game, can't post shots and won't have anything showing up ingame.

If they're simply doing a 3DS-friendly version of the Miiverse site, they could at least add some hooks in the browser the site could use to access the Activity Log and the currently playing game so Miiverse could know which games the 3DS owns and whatnot.

3ds version should be the higher priority, Nintendo!

Actually, before the 3DS version can be done they need to update the 3DS so it works with NNIDs.

On Miiverse, empathy, and social gaming...
"The outlook for Nintendo fans on social networking services such as Twitter is worsening. If we look into it, the people who used to post about Nintendo are satisfied with Miiverse and have stopped posting online as much."

"When we first spoke about Miiverse, we were told that trying to make a social network now was a fool's errand. We were asked by many people why we weren't simply connecting up with Twitter or Facebook. But, what we thought would be good about the service has largely come true and, as of right now, our customers are really enjoying it. The networks of people on Facebook and Twitter aren't all people you are playing games with, right? From my viewpoint, I don't use Twitter or Facebook [privately] but if I were to, it would be about things like 'Hey, wanna go for a drink?' 'Wanna go on a trip?' 'Why don't we have a class reunion?', and so on, it wouldn't be just about the people who I am playing games with. Because I couldn't tell my high school buddies that I had got a high score in Mario Kart. (Laughs)"

"We, Nintendo, have always thought this, but games shouldn't just be about the time you spend with a console, but also telling people that you passed something, or that you found a neat trick is interesting. If I were to put a name on it, it would be empathy."

"Mr. [Shigeru] Miyamoto has been talking about this concept for years, the reason that the games that he makes are popular around the world is that they have that meta-shared experience between players. Mr. Miyamoto likes making you feel that, and giving you the ability to feel that. It was at a time thinking about that that we received the original idea for Miiverse. Like 'Ah, this is an empathy network.'"

"So, with 'empathy' as a theme, we created Miiverse to make games played alone not a lonely experience, but one that you could experience with many people. In order to make that a reality, we had to integrate it into our platform, and support it as a unified service."

”[Regarding Miiverse on PCs and Smartphones]I can't make any concrete statements about when it will be available yet, but it won't be far away."

"If there was Miiverse on the 3DS [Note, the article mentions this is still the intention] it would probably be something amazing. If Miiverse and Animal Crossing were integrated together, we'd have the chance to create something even more awesome [than what is going on now]."

If I'm reading that polygon article right and the web app supports doodling, that would be something I wasn't at all expecting, and it would be both welcome and awesome. Miiverse drawing on my nexus? Yes please!

whatever the 3DS successor is will have this functionality in full I guess. Probably looking at a gameboy color/dsi type of successor with expanded functionality with miiverse included in the system.
Digital game only version?

hm...

Mobile/web versions are more useful, just for being able to look at Miiverse feeds without turning on the Wii U or relying on a Wi-fi hotspot (3DS).

Exactly, not only does the 3DS need to have accounts implemented to work, but it's much less convenient than having it on browsers and smart phones, especially for the market at large.

So unified 3DS - Wii U accounts are on the way? By the way, didn't they also promise a eShop webstore? Still there's no word about that.

The big question for me is if they will make Miiverse browsable for those without a NNID? You would think they want as many people as possible experiencing the service...

My guess is that Miiverse on the web will be viewable to all, but you won't be able to create an account unless you own a Nintendo product. Maybe it'll be like Flipnote on the DSi where you can access all content through the dsi or the web, but can only create content on a Nintendo product.

Yeah, when Nintendo gets Miiverse on the 3DS, I'd like to have it function the same way as with the Wii U version, such as communities for 3DS games and the ability to attach screencaps (which the 3DS already supports in the game notes app). But I rather get broader access to Miiverse now, than to wait longer for them to implement all the 3DS stuff.

They'll likely expand the NNID access to 3DS owners, but you'll definitely need one to access this. No chance otherwise.

Also, I doubt phones will have drawing capabilities on this... I can't think of a good way to draw something with not only a capacitive screen but also a 4" one. A tablet? Maybe but drawing is only gonna be worthwhile on a tablet with a digitizer.

The Wii U version is already just an HTML site I thought so why would it be so difficult and take to long to get it onto smartphones because they are also just going to be HTML versions to start with. Hope they add eShop access and for desktops too like they mentioned.

Well was honestly not expecting Nintendo to follow through with this.

Hopefully the 3ds one gets pretty much the same functionality as the Wii U one.

Yeah, you will eventually be able to post on Miiverse from pretty much anywhere, but you can only register from a Wii U and later 3DS. I'm all for that.

Nintendo traditionally takes things like security and UI seriously. And unlike many companion iOS apps, I think they'd want to launch something with the full, optimized featureset instead of gradually adding to it.

I'm sure there's stuff they need to sort out like multitouch support, mobile resolution drawing, etc. I'd think they'd take the opportunity to make a dedicated app rather than web apps that are generally crap on phones, especially when it comes to navigational UI.

I kind of doubt they'd put that many features on the mobile or web apps. I would be surprised if they did much more user interaction functions than "Yeah"ing, or basic text replies, since that's basically what the main use cases will be (and won't detract from the Wii U app).

This makes sense.
Last thing Nintendo wants is Miiverse flooded with thousands of "Why isn't this game on iOS?" posts.

I've been waiting for this!! I have a WiiU but I have to leave it at home because I don't have a TV at school.

I'd love to actually be able to get on Miiverse via my phone.

according to some blog(esuteru), this is a pic of the attendance for Nintendo's Miiverse panel at GDC ....

Is it usual to have so few?

Honestly, that and console wars are the last thing I'd want there either. Debates about economics and going third party are interesting and all, but don't really suit the atmosphere in Miiverse (meant for posting quick opinions on the games you play).

So yeah... while usually leaving people out of social networks isn't a good idea, this should be for Nintendo gamers only. Or maybe IDs not tied to any console could post in some open visitor community (alias garbage thread)...
