PS4 video capture simply doesn't work

Blackthorn

"hello?" "this is vagina"
Every time I've tried to record a good game in Killzone, I check later to find a random 15 minute chunk way off the mark from when I hit share. I've lost so many cool moments and now I just can't be bothered to try anymore.

The constant recording is great in theory but in its current state it's entirely useless.

Is anyone else having this problem? Has it been acknowledged by Sony?

Yes it does!

In fact, I must delete videos all the time because the system store them on the hard drive...

I have this problem too. Wasn't able to record great BF4 and NFS:R footage. Very disappointing... especially because the recorded footage is so random that it doesn't make sense. It works perfectly after I tried it again but now several great moments are forever lost.

Seems to be random for me. It doesn't seem to take video anymore unless I activate it by double tapping the button (changed my settings) but then it seems to constantly record and save multiple 15 minute videos if I keep playing that long.

It is constantly recording video but you have to hit share before you exit the game or the last 15 min segment wont save to the hard drive. If you close the game without hitting share the video is discarded.

You are correct sir. Sometimes it works... sometimes it is just a completely random block of 15 minutes. The video quality it uploads to Facebook has been complete crap so I've been using my external capture device anyhow but still... it would be nice to capture those unexpected moments when I'm not recording externally.

Why would the PS4 stop recording and save tons of videos at all though? If it theoretically is constantly recording the last 15 minutes constantly it should never "cut" unless you tell it to. If I don't tell it to stop recording then I clearly don't want whatever happened in the last 15 minutes.

Because that's the limit they imposed.

Can't you just start it up again in a new video?

What it records is way too random at the moment. Sony needs to fix to allow us have better control of what we record.

I don't need it to always record the last 15 minutes of my game either every time I hit the share button either. When I hit the share button, most of the tiime I just want to broadcast my gameplay and not record my game.

Similar problems - I know there have been a few topics about it but haven't seen any official response.

In my games it seems like it starts to record when I start a game but isn't a rolling 15 minutes, the recording stops after 15m. In order to consistently record something I have to manually start a recording (double press).

More details on my experience to answer some of the questions:

I have the share button set as press for screenshot, hold for options.

At the end of a good game in Killzone, I hold the share button and select "upload video" while the next game loads. A 15 minute video is saved, which I assume is my most recent gameplay.

But every time I check the file later the gameplay is from the round before, usually only capturing the first couple of minutes of the round I actually wanted to record.

This has happened 5-6 times now. If I'm getting something wrong, I'd love to know what.

How long are you waiting?

I've exported probably 5 videos and each of them I went into the share app and the video was sitting there... I trimmed it to the last few minutes (as it had just happened) and uploaded it to facebook (which I then download and post to youtube).

Haven't had a problem yet.

it you take a screenshot or video it will start a new 15 minutes and segment the last 15 minutes before that off so you can find it later... I think.

I don't know the answer, but my PS4 record all the time. I noticed when I saw my storage.

I don't know, I hit it at the end of a BF4 match once and instead of having any footage of the match, it had recorded the 15 minutes I was AFK in the menus beforehand. It might just be wonky with BF4.

I've tried this with AC4, Contrast and DC Online, and it's given me 15min clips from long before the last 15min numerous times. I bet they'll patch it to be reliable, but I lost some funny stuff.

Nope - I can confirm that Knack and Assassins Creed both have the same problem.

Double tap the share button and then open the share menu when you are finished and it should, theoretically work.

How I thought the share function worked was that the PS4 constantly recorded the past 15 minutes and pressing the share button once would save the past 15 minutes (similar to how it works on Onlive). What you're describing does work but you have to know something is coming up that you want to record rather than just recording something that already happened.

lol I think some of you have some weird ideas about how the share button is supposed to work. Regardless of your settings for the share button you have several options.

1. Take a screen shot.
2. Save the last 15 minutes of gaming footage.
3. Manually start a recording at a certain point (The double tap on share button).

Option 1 and 2 are switched depending on if you are setup on the default share configuration or the easy screenshot configuration.

why do you need to do this? my understanding of how the share button works is that every time you hit the share button and go into the share menu it creates a screenshot as well as creates a video of the last 15 minutes of gameplay

i believe the people complaining on here are doing so because the auto video creation part above doesn't seem to work all the time or it creates something other than the last 15 min of gameplay

Works fine for me. Tapping it takes a screen, holding it brings ups my last 15 minutes and the share menu.
I've uploaded a couple videos already. Just a shame Facebook is the only avenue for them.

Been meaning to make a thread. It does not work reliably. I've tested it out. The first time you press share it works fine. Any time within 15 minutes after that, it works fine. After that point it seems to record seemingly at random. Need to do more testing.

It is buggy atm, hope Sony gets on fixing it soon.

How are you recording externally? Doesn't the PS4 have HDCP?

Or, you know, it could be that option 2 is unreliable like people here are saying.

Nobody is confused about how it's supposed to work, it just doesn't work reliably

edit: nevermind, I guess I don't understand who you're talking to since you also posted in this thread that it doesn't work right

I've yet to have any problems with recording. It's always the last 15 minute from when i hit the button - edit - send.

I do wish that the screenshot feature was maybe paired with the recording feature so I didn't have to perfectly time hitting the share button to get the screen that I want durring the middle of playing but.. other than that? not a single issue. Plenty of Facebook videos annoying the hell out of my family and friends at the moment ;)

But i've had what i can only guess is a somewhat uniquely stress/pain free experience with the PSN on my PS4. no drops, downtime, slowness or anything of that sort after my initial setup process.

How are you recording externally? Doesn't the PS4 have HDCP?

Elgato workaround seems to be a popular method at the moment. You need a through box to plug the PS4 into between your Elgato and your playstation but it works.

Sure does. You can strip it out easily though. I use this splitter to strip the HDCP.

You can see that I even agree earlier in the thread and say it is recording randomly. But some people are saying things like "It is just recording all the time after seeing my videos"... which is technically true - it IS recording but it isn't saving that recording to your videos folder.

you can do this though? pressing the share button once (with the default settings) should always save a screenshot and create a video of the last 15 min of gameplay (this is the people are complaining is not working in this thread)

personally i like changing to the following non-default option:

1- single press to take screenshot
2. long single press to take a screenshoot and save video of last 15 min
3- double tap to start recording from that point

I have found that hitting the home/PS button pretty much negates the last 15mins of gameplay.

makes me think you're onto something. maybe the weird behavior or the result of people going into dmb during gameplay and we're just not fully understanding the nuances of gameplay recording?

Option 3 is not reliable either. It'll record by showing the red [REC] button for a few seconds but then the button disappears and I have no idea if it's still recording or not.

Well... you should see my storage then. I have A LOT of videos there and I never used the "share" button except for curiosity one or two times.

Yes, of course it's still recording. The red light notification lets you know that it's just started.

It is, the red button is just a notification that the recording has started.

edit, beaten like a redhead.

There have been three times I've tried to record something in Ass Flag and only once did it actually have the previous few minutes recorded, usually there will be a number of minutes missing between the end of the most recent 15m recording and the present. Yeah, you can double tap to tell it to record, but isn't the idea that it's supposed to be always storing the last 15 minutes so you can save awesome spontaneous moments you encounter? Disappointing feature so far.
