I Give Up....I don't get MiiVerse

Personally I've decided to use it in order to ask about and learn things about the game I'm playing. In that sense one of the reasons Nintendo designed it was to help people having a hard time with games by essentially building a discussion community within within the system. Remember the "Why can't metroid crawl" posts? Shit like that is why Nintendo made MiiVerse.

If it actually works like that I think it'll be nice. Instead of having to make things in games super obvious and hold your hand all the time, you can just ask for help without having to rely on a computer or other machine.

It's pretty straightforward. You can galk to other people about specific games and franchises. You can ask questions and answer the questions of other users. You can share screenshots and drawings. It's pretty cool.

Well on the Wii U side, what makes Miiverse so great is how it connects directly into your games. For instance, people post their thoughts on a particular part of a level in a game, and that person's thoughts can reach you before you hit that spot....warning you of dangers or traps ahead. ZombiU does this really well.

Rather than look online, typically I can find out where the missing star or stamp is through a post that's shown when completing a level of 3D World.

it's like Twitter, but nintendo-only focused.

You can use it in a silly way, you can use it in a serious way, you can send PM's, you can share screenshots, you can follow certain people, hide others. you can create a "feed" with only the contents/users you want.

if you "get" twitter, you "get" miiverse.

I've only had a Wii U for a few days and not used Miiverse extensively yet but I love its integration into Super Mario 3D World; seeing random posts from other people strewn about the overworld and when finishing levels is neat.

I mean look at this.

It's just a great place where owners of the same game can interact with each other.

Pretty much this. Also, I bought a launch day Wii U and I was setting up the Metroid game for 3 players in Nintendo Land, however, my Wiimotes were not being detected for some reason. I couldn't find anywhere in the manual's or online that could point me to what was wrong. So I decided to take it to Miiverse and posted a question about it.

I waited about 15 minutes and got multiple replies telling me I had to go to my settings and calibrate the sensor bar. Instant fix.

The Miiverse is a concentrated place for Nintendo fans to congregate. While there definitely is 90% junk on there of: "yeah, I finally beat that level!" There are cases of people genuinely helping each other unlock certain things in games or find secrets and so on.

Have you used Miiverse?

No, not at all. Was that a prerequisite to complaining?

All I know is, I still have my friend code, which a separate list of friends. I can't bring those postpone over easily, and I know most of them have signed up. Beyond that, I kinda don't get why I would want to join in the discussions.

I guess I thought Miiverse would be an interesting mix of Facebook / The xbox love friends list. Instead it's Twitter, but not as fun and R-rated as Twitter.

Maybe it's cause it's meant for kids, and not 30 year old me.

Can non-game communities even be created?

Yep. 3D World Miiverse integration makes me feel like I'm experiencing each new level with hundreds of other people after beating a level.

Anihawk I think described it best, it's like a more moderated, game focused Twitter. Most just post to show off something.

It is also a great way for new players to ask for stuff without having to go through a poorly formatted gamefaqs txt.

edit: beaten a million times.

Thinking about it more like twitter and less like a forum actually helps me "get" it more. Thanks, GAF!

Maybe I'll give 'er another chance.

Exactly and thats the kind of stuff that just isn't there on 3ds yet. I figured there'd be a lot of people underwhelmed by 3ds miiverse considering that.

You're trolling, right?

No, people cannot make their own communities. That prevents it becoming a spamfilled place.
No, it is not for children.

It is a resource used to communicate with other players, share accomplishments (with screenshots rather than a generic score), ask for help etc.

So I just made my first Miiverse post. It was about how Game Freak's lack of Miltank love makes me sad, and she needs a Megastone.

I just got a yeah.

I love Miiverse.

I mean it's fine to be annoyed that you don't have this or that NINID feature on the 3DS (friend code, list, etc), but.. none of that has anything to do with Miiverse.

And yes, using it is obviously a prerequisite to complaining, is that a serious question?

I really want to join in on the hype. I don't DISLIKE it, I simply don't get it. It's not quite a message board like GAF. It's not really even a chat lobby. Near as I can tell, it's basically a place to trade pictures?

IF it was a mini Nintendo-focused GAF, I'd be all in. Trade gameplay vids and screen shots, etc...

But i'm really trying to wrap my head around why this is cool.

it sort of is everything you described.

when I'm having troubles in a game (especially a popular one), I'll post a question on Miiverse and usually get a response within minutes, if not seconds. I also like posting fun pics.. If I even get 1 Yeah to it, it means my pic gave at least one person a few seconds of entertainment.

likewise to the first point, every once in a while I'll scan Player Posts for a game and answer whatever questions I can (hint people.. flag your post with Question)

It's a forum where you can draw stuff. It's pretty fun for a few minutes at a time. Japanese people draw the funniest stuff.

Yesterday atfer updating my 3DS I jumped into the Animal Crossing community, and there was a picture of villager in a tank ramming down the Town Hall with a blank look on his face. Caption: Peace was never an option.

It's nothing too special, but it can be a bit of fun.

I don't think the 3DS or any 3DS game utilize Miiverse appropriately. The Wii U does a much better job at it but I'd give it some time.

I imagine that any future 3DS titles will feature Miiverse integration. Maybe some older ones get patched to include it on a minimal scale.

My favorite part is that you can filter out all the rabble that wants to pop off about games they haven't played. Love it, wish we could do that here.

I've also had some pretty great game related conversations on Miiverse. I do wish they'd add video sharing and "M" rated communities though. The 3ds version is just getting started but it's already quick and functional, just not integrated into games yet.

Another huge positive about Miiverse is how indie developers are using it to directly communicate and talk with their fans about their games. Top Nintendo devs like Aonuma, Eguchi, and Sakurai also use it to directly communicate to fans with updates of their games. That is very cool and very awesome.

Yeah I don't see a point for it either. It's like a pseudo-social network but even less useful than normal social networks due to limited features. I'll never use it.

Yeah, I don't get this. Sorry.

It's easier to wrap your head around it if you just try it! You've already admitted to not even trying it. You just decided to come here and bitch first without having any idea of what it's about

I am sure there is some psychiatric research paper in there somewhere.

Is there a way to turn it off? Especially in Mario, I don't want the location of a hidden star scrolling across the top of the screen. Not that it is all bad, just not my thing. The little dudes running around when I replay a level is annoying as hell also.

It's definitely lost something from the old days, when the population was basically comprised of launch Wii U owners, ie true blue Nintendo fans, people with more money than sense, adults and game enthusiasts, shooting the shit and hanging out in a small selection of well-populated communities, trying to outdo each other with amazing art because there were no games to play.

Now it hosts a much broader population of problem queries, bland commentators, squiggle doodlers (no disrespect to them, some of my favourite pics on Miiverse are super-simplistic in execution) and meme spammers spread between a bewildering selection of communities that make it easy for you to go unnoticed. Removing the yeah count and board post count robbed Miiverse of a sense of history.

It's still a lot of fun and amazingly useful, but it's more of a perpetual, disposable service now rather than the novel social network it once was, which I suppose is inevitable.

Another huge positive about Miiverse is how indie developers are using it to directly communicate and talk with their fans about their games. Top Nintendo devs like Aonuma, Eguchi, and Sakurai also use it to directly communicate to fans with updates of their games. That is very cool and very awesome.

They more or less built Twitter into a Nintendo. But a nicer, heavily-moderated version of it.

Guess I'll have to dig out the 3DS and update it. I live Miiverse on Wii U, it's like another fun gaming message board to me. Only problem I see is that a board with a large number of followers will see your posts get buried really fast.

I don't get it either. I am a simple gamer.

I guess when you have nothing on a system to play you might as well try something which is on the system.

Ok. Think of it like this

You're playing Zelda, you're deep in a dungeon and you're stuck. Go on Miiverse, post a picture, and within minutes you're likely to get aid.
You're playing Mario and you've speedrun a level in less than 30 seconds. You go on Miiverse and post your accomplishment happily for your friends, and people you do not know, to see.
You're playing any game and you enjoy it. You go on Miiverse to post your thoughts of the game, and discuss other people's thoughts of it.
And, if you're artsy, you go on Miiverse to showcase your own drawings based on the game.

I was sceptical too, when they first announced it, but love the hell out of it on the Wii U, and really happy about it finally being on the 3DS.

The main problem with miiverse is the signal to noise ratio. I'm guilty of useless posts myself.
There is very little actual discussion like a forum would have, but maybe that's the point?

But it is exactly that. Save for the video part, obviously.

You play a game, get stuck/want to know something -> hop onto Miiverse, post question/etc and attach a screenshot of the scene in the game related to your issue if necessary (or just 'cause). You hop back into the game, fumble around/do other stuff, hop back into Miiverse, check for answers. Among those answers there might be a drawing of shit you need to do to solve your problem, a screenshot showing you what to do/where to go or just a helpful explanation.

You play a game, see something awesome/funny/stupid. To take a screenshot, you post it. Check back to see if people agree or not, find funny responses, silly drawings, rants.

You want to bitch about a VC game being 50Hz? Go to Miiverse, bitch right into their faces.

You want to interact with the developers of games? Go to Miiverse, read what they have to say or post something and have the devs respond.

You want achievements? Play a game that uses Miiverse as an achievement system (recent examples: Deus Ex HR Director's Cut, Batman Arkham Origins)

You want to check out what others think of a game you don't have? Check the Miiverse community.

You want to hear from people about a game who HAVE ACTUALLY PLAYED THE DAMN THING? Hop onto Miiverse where there's a checkmark next to your name if you played the game in question. If only GAF and the internet at large had something this awesome...

You want in-game community features? Enable Miiverse features in supported games like Wind Waker HD which pulls Miiverse posts and randomly spawns them in the ocean as messages in a bottle. They might have rare pictures for your pictograph gallery that you can use even. Other games use Miiverse in a variety of ways, mostly related to sharing messages.

You want to see what your buddies are up to? Check Miiverse, see what they've been posting. Someone posted something cool? Give a YEAH. Someone has a problem/question? Help out with a comment.

You can draw? Draw something! Have people praise the crap out of your ass. Be creative.

Miiverse is GAF/Twitter/Facebook all rolled into one if you spend more than three seconds looking at it.

Theres a setting where you can choose not to display posts with spoilers. From what I've seen mods are pretty strict about flagging spoilers. And yeah, you can turn it off completely.

It's not that hard to understand, dude.

Post about the games you're playing. Ask questions if you're stuck or brag about doing something cool. Add a screenshot to your post if you like. View the game boards and reply to other people's posts. Go to the activity feed to look at your friends' posts. "Yeah" (like) cool artwork.

This ^^^

It's basically Nintendo's version of social media but entirely dedicated to gaming. The thing that really sets it apart is the artwork, some of it is amazing. Also great if you're stuck on something - ask a question with an optional screenshot and you'll get an immediate answer most of the time.

It's also a great way of Wii U owners to communicate with publishers, we've seen this happening with Earthbound, Rayman Legends and The Wonderful 101/Bayonetta 1 recently.

Ive had some female dev at Platinum games give "Yeahs" to a few of my Wonderful 101 pictures I took.

Miiverse is fucking great.

It's kinda like a Nintendo makeshift trophy system, except you devise your own accomplishments via pictures. The "Yeahs" are there to boost the ego.

Definitely. I can't see them releasing future games without some sort of Miiverse integration. I would love something like being able to race Miiverse ghosts in Mario games.

Pretty much this.

Also it can be a lot of fun if you have creative friends who are good at making doodles. Had a lot of those on SwapNotes before it died so Miiverse was a needed service for some time now.

Why doesn't this overlay stuff in games. Why is this... ugh, and I hate to say this... so Nintendo?

Stating the opposite of a true fact to piss off people.

why? the games on 3DS are better, and there are more of them.

Yeah it just hit me that you were referring to the 3DS Miiverse. Its newer so Its not as well integrated as the Wii U version. Going forward with the bigger titles, it some of your complaints should be addressed like it not being overlayed within games. As for the chat, Nintendo attracts an all ages audience so I can understand your frustration with it not being as open as Twitter, but that's what Twitter is for. Miiverse is just a handy quick communication tool, it is what you make of it. Some people draw, some people have general chats, some people use it like Gamefaqs, some people share high scores and achievements, some take over entire miiverse pages and dedicate them to Willem Dafoe and some people use it to organize online matches.

Superb post.

It's just a neat "meta layer" to the normal gameplay experience. It connects you to a community where you can see people reacting to things you experienced in-game, or seeking assistance, or sharing achievements. They also have the option to illustrate their posts with drawings or screenshots. Knowing that this whole community is bustling right behind the game makes the game itself feel more "alive."

And this one.

I'll also agree that you really need to try the Wii U version, with all the bells and whistles, to fully appreciate it.
