I hope some of the nighttime photographers will be staying up for the first winter solstice lunar eclipse in 372 years.

Yeh, I'll try to get a shot. In the UK we're lucky as it's due to start at 7.42 AM I think - I.e. I'll be up anyway at that time. Just hope the sky is clear!

Edit: just been out to try to get shots of the moon. I can't even see the fricken moon! (too cloudy) I hope you guys in North America get some good shots.

Just got back from a fantastic Bonobo concert. First time I brought a camera to a concert. Man it's hard as hell and it doesn't help when you don't bring the right gear. :lol
Still I got some decent shots out of it and a ton of experience.

These shots were made with a Nikon D3100 + 18-55mm Kit lens.

Great shots, especially with a kit lens. I wish i took my camera when i saw him at the roundhouse, the lighting was incredible - just too paranoid it would end up covered in beer.

Got some photos of my brother for part of my grandma's christmas present. Still trying to get used to this new lens, not being able to AF is a bit of a pain at times, but I'm hoping it's beneficial in the long run.

Great pictures in the last page.

I bought myself a 7D and I was planning to shoot thousands of pictures here in Korea for winter but so far, I'm only taking videos... I'll try to really lock myself up with the picture mode because I haven't really tried it yet :lol

Thanks guise. I was pretty happy with how these turned out. I had planned to bring a 50mm f/1.8 to the gig but as it turned out the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 isn't an AF-S lens, so I'll have to save up for the 50mm f/1.4 instead. And in hindsight the 70-200mm would have been great as well. Took most of my shots that night at f/5.6 ISO 400 anyway. And yeah I was pretty paranoid about getting shit on my camera as well but I was at the very front of the stage and Paradiso is more often than not filled with an incredibly chill crowd so I took my chances and I'm glad I did. First time shooting at a concert, but definitely not the last!

Some shots I took today, nothing special, the sunset was gorgeous but I got to the beach too late!

Little question for the Adobe Lightroom users in here. I recently started shooting in RAW and for some reason Lightroom automatically darkens the pictures when I click on them in development mode. Is there something I'm enabling by accident perhaps?

darkens the pictures as compared to? It may be showing you the jpg preview when you first import them, but since the RAW file is unedited by camera setting you're getting all that stripped when is opened before editing.

Someone can probably explain it better than me here...

Yeah it's compared to the .jpg preview and the way it looks on the camera LCD screen. Basically when it loads in I can see it flip from the way it looked and should look, to a darkened version.

The jpg version has already been processed by the camera settings. The RAW file has yet to be processed so no settings have been applied to it, is just the information the sensor sees. You use lightroom to develop it and bring it back to how you think it should look.

This thread helped me a bit when I started http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=354265

Went out in the snow again today for a second photoshoot. I think this one was a bit more successful with the lighting being a lot stronger.

man, i really like your stuff. nice restraint in your processing too.

I love coming back to this thread with something to contribute :) I have been getting very jealous of the shots in here lately and it inspired me to get out of bed early this morning and go for a walk with the camera.

I suck at nature photography but in the interest of getting out of my comfort zone of decaying buildings I thought I'd take some pictures of the Indiana Dunes while out there visiting my parents:

I don't have any photos since my attempt at getting the red eclipsed moon failed miserably (DAMN IT SEATTLE) so instead I am going to share some flickr users that I really like :D

I've seen a lot of people asking for tutorial on getting that "vintage look" in the photog thread.
I think Siebe's blog explains it well. http://devetpan.com/
you can probably follow what he is doing and tweak it to come up with your own look.
and his flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/swarmoeskerken/

i love this guy's flickr as well. He makes amazing photos using his GX100/Sigma DP1 and IR filter

and lastly my favorite seattle photographer

Glad to see this thread is still full of awesome shots :)

Haven't used my camera for personal shots recently, but I did take some shots of gingerbread men my bro baked. Not the best pic.

Canon 7D, 50mm f1.8 wide open. Raw from the camera. First shot that I'm totaly satisfied with my new 7D. So far, I'm having more fun shooting vids than getting to master the camera. That's downtown Seoul btw

Wow, I'm loving all the shots guys. For someone looking to get into photography, it's a little bit daunting actually.

But yah, I really want to increase my skill as a photographer. I want quality shots to document my 20's. I'm also very interested in approaching photography as an art as well, especially since I've developed a passion for cinematography in the past few years. This isn't anything I do professionally, but I'm quite passionate about it as a hobby.

With that said, I've had the Canon EOS Rebel T2i recommended to me. It's within my price range, and I've been told by photographers I know personally that it has a fairly substantial feature set. Does GAF agree? The shots I see on here have already given me a trust in your opinions.:D

Also, what's a good beginner lens? I've been told that the 50mm f/1.8 is a good all purpose lens, but it excels mostly in day to day shots. What does GAF think about this? I'm willing to spend around 1000 dollars in total right now, but I can save more if necessary.

Any tips would be appreciated!

I think 50mm is too long for everyday use on crop sensor cameras. Nikon has an awesome cheap 35/1.8 lens. I'm sure Canon has a similar lens for their cameras.

I've heard the T2i is a great camera.

I'd start with the 17-55 kit zoom, since you get it for so cheap when you buy it with the camera. Focal lengths are a personal preference, so try using the zoom at different lengths while "zooming with your feet" before buying a prime. My personal choice for a Canon crop camera would probably be the 28/1.8.

Mmm, food photos... I know Flickr says the shot of the cinnamon roll was only taken yesterday, but I would swear I've seen it or one almost exactly like it someplace recently... Maybe it was on Tastespotting. This is going to drive me crazy until I find it.

From recently upgrading from a 400D to a 550D (Rebel T2i) I cannot recommend this camera enough. The still image quality is really recognisable, good set of auto features for beginners such as yourself, and it's almost half the price of it's competitors (60D, 7D etc). The plus of being able to record Full 1080p video is such a treat as well, because if you want to keep it up as a hobby, you'll always have a feeling of something to film / shoot.

Also, the 50mm 1.8 is a must. It gives you a lot freedom to experiment with the low aperture and shallow depth of field. As stated above, the 50mm on a crop censored camera like the 550D can be a bit too drawn in, but going for a 30mm lens with the same kind of 1.8 aperture can be very pricey. I've been using the 50mm exclusively for over a year and have only just decided to save up some money for the Sigma 30mm 1.4. It's a really good lens to start experimenting with, since the quality of your images will blow your mind at first, and it's dirt cheap!

You can check my stream on Flickr for some examples of the Rebel T2i and 50mm combo to see what you're images will look like (Although bare in mind I do a fair amount of editing). http://www.flickr.com/photos/jackbatchelor/

Hope this has helped.

Also, really digging these two shots -

You might have seen it in the Iron GAF thread, and if you're one of the 20 people who show up on my recipe blog when I udpate it, you might have seen it there too.
Anyway, bake my good man, bake ahead.

Ah, of course! For whatever reason, it didn't occur to me to check back in the cooking thread.

Your treats look great already, but the dishes, beautifully colored and textured cloths, warm backgrounds and the lighting really take those shots to a whole 'nother level.

This is the most encouraging thing I've been told about my pictures. Thanks a lot!

Hey GAF, I'm considering the purchase of a tripod, as I like long-exposure shots and self-portraiture. Sadly, I don't know jack about that kind of gear, so what are the things to look for in a good tripod?

For tripods, I find a good ballhead is really key. You're going to be using it a ton, and a good one will be a much nicer experience to deal with.

I would recommend going to a big camera store and spending alot of time messing with the locking mechanisms on each tripod. Get the one that feels the best to you. You're going to be doing those actions over and over again and you don't want to be dealing w/ something that feels crappy.

Thanks, I'll do just that!

got a D3100 last night, and am learning how to do anything with it. Harder than I was expecting. I've only used point and shoot cameras before.

Thought this picture of my son turned out good, though, imo. nothing anywhere close to what you all are posting though, wow.

I'm in the same boat, plonked some money down on a D3100 last week, but with Christmas and all, haven't been able to sit down with it. I'll put some shots up soon.
