Oddworld on PS+ will NOT be crossbuy (paid version is)

We're talking about this in the PS+ thread but I think a lot of people missed on this.

Oddworld New n Tasty is now free on PS+ for PS4, with the PS3 version coming this month and Vita version coming later this year. The game has already been confirmed as crossbuy but some users asked for more confirmation, and this is what we've got from the devs:

If you get the free version, you won't get the other versions, despite the game has a crossbuy feature.
That's actually setting a precedent as no one ever did this and honestly doesn't look like a good move. If true (because I don't know if they can actually do this) I just hope no one follows this route...

Disappointing but not totally unfair. Of course I'd love more versions but I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Well that makes feel a little better that I bought it in December and still haven't played it, on the flipside I can see this happening more often going forward which sucks, fair, but sucks.

That's a bummer. Understandable, but still disappointing.

And yeah, fingers crossed this doesn't become the norm going forward.

My thoughts exactly.

Seems like OI made a rash decision to make it crossbuy without taking into account how many issues they would have making the PS3/Vita ports. I'm sure when Sony came to them asking about PS+ they jumped at the chance to make a big stack of sales revenue now that it would have died down pretty quiet so long after launch.

I like to think that if all versions were releasing at once it would have been cross-buy and so, hopefully, other PS+ games which release in that manner continue the PS+ cross-buy trend.

I guess this was the reason for the delay (well, relative to when PS+ is usually announced) with announcing this month's titles? Maybe Sony were trying to get cross-buy enabled for PS+ copies?

It baffles me they think people will fork out cash to play it on another platform.
I for one won't be playing it on the Vita then, which is a shame.

We have gotten used to cross buy/save, it's one of the best new features this gen!

Yeah it seems likely this could have been part of the hold up in announcing PS+

Stuff like Resogun that got a late port to Vita was free, even for the PS+ version so this is a new precedent to be set. Will be interesting to see if it happens again.

Understandable, but introducing PS+ versions instead of unlocking the actual version of the game could easily become a slippery slope is no one watches.
Like, no patches for the PS+ release, free DLC only working with the paid version etc.

I'm not affected this time but I always like getting the Vita PS+ games on PS4 as I could otherwise not play them at all (but that was always a bonus as they only promise a set number of games per platform and not 3-4 games for PS4 how it often is the case).

It's not a big deal, but still.. why? How many people do they expect to purchase the Vita or PS3 versions after getting the PS4 one for free? Doesn't seem worth it.

They're cutting a feature off of the PS+ version game, I don't think anyone ever did this and honestly I don't think it's fair

That's what I also thought and it's understandable but they could've waited until the release of the other versions, it's not like they had to put it on PS+ this month.

I, for example, won't, despite I wanted to play it on Vita, and I don't have a PS4.

Driveclub was never going to be a part of the main lineup. Cutting a feature off of a game in tbe main lineup is really shitty.

Exactly this. Driveclub is NOT part of the IGC. Oddworld is.

Yeah it seems likely this could have been part of the hold up in announcing PS+

Yeah, this too. There's a bunch of devs that released new versions of their games after PS+. Heck, games like Don't Starve weren't even promised to be crossbuy and yet we got it for free.

I expect this to become an increasingly common way to incentivise paid purchases of content included in PS+.

I always thought that cross-buy on plus titles were a nice to have kinda thing. Totally understand if the devs feel like they need to get paid for the work they put into the other platforms.

I'm not sure about that, I seem to remember them doing something similar with Stranger's Wrath where the Vita version was coming later in the year but you didn't get it even if you swiped the plus version for the PS3 earlier (PAL). I remember an article about it where the devs explained the reasoning in the context of the Vita version having a separate budget etc.

Edit: Seems they were never crossbuy - my bad.

Resogun is all but a first party release so that isn't really comparable to this situation.

Oddworld Stranger's Wrath wasn't crossbuy, New n Tasty is.

Edit: and yes, SW Vita went free as well a year later.

Don't Starve, Thomas Was Alone, Limbo Vita...there are various third party examples

Lone Survival is like that too. I think they don't feel like giving away "for free" versions that still have to come out and they're working on. Makes sense.

The fuck ups with this game just don't seem to end. They overpriced the game at launch. It was released extremely buggy. It launched with worse controls than the original. They messed up the release of the game on other platforms. Now he PS Plus version isn't cross buy. What next?

I liked how Velocity 2X was a large game launching on PS+ but also had one or two paid DLC packs of extra hard levels that didn't factor into the story mode for sale at the same time. Almost made you feel like rewarding the devs for making the main game free so you would buy the DLC as a thank you.

Huh, first game to do this. While I understand why, I too hope it's not a trend that continues, hard to justify it to myself buying the game twice. I did already but Oddworld, so doesn't affect me but still.

I thought Valiant heart was cross buy too? (At least I'm sure it's on Vita too), odd that isn't cross buy. I guess simply because "they're ubisoft" they don't have to use cross buy. So annoying only indie developers use this and see the positives with it, I don't recall a single AAA developer doing it. I can only think of Sony doing it for Sly cooper which was a "big game"

Actually, isn't there a sort of bug (?) that sets the status of a PS+ game to "bought" so that it does not require PS+ to play anymore?
I remember it happens to cross-buy games that later release on additional platforms (e.g. Resogun).

Maybe that's their way around that?

Yes, but again, they could've just waited a bit and then putting it on PS+ when all the versions are out.

EDIT: double post, sorry

Wonder how this game will work on the Vita to begin with. The ps4 version struggles enough with performance as is.

Ubisoft did it with Child of Light PS4 & PS3 (not Vita).

Sony did it for PS All Stars, Ratchet & Clank Trilogy, Ratchet & Clank Full Frontal Assault, Ratchet & Clank Into the Nexus, Jak & Daxter Trilogy, God of War HD Collections,... as well.

The PS4 version (that came later on) is not crossbuy if you got the game with Plus (at least in Yurop).

Is the paid version crossbuy? It might just be like Stick it to the man, the PS4 version is not crossbuy, but PS3 and Vita are.

Edit: apparently it's not crossbuy in the first place, so it's not a matter of PS+.

PS4 users in the United States will come down with something on October 14, with symptoms spreading to European PS4 users on October 15, and a mutation scheduled to reach Wii U owners on October 16. All versions will run a monetary fever of $9.99, and though the PS4 version is not cross-buy compatible, it "does not include any new features" when compared to the PS3 or Vita versions.

Valiant Hearts isn't on Vita.

JAW has done well with the Stranger's Wrath and Munch's Oddysee ports (aside from a bug at launch that was fixed in about a week). They seem to have a good grasp on the system and its limitations.

Is it cross buy normally?
Good catch, the PS4 version is not cross-buy even if you buy it normally, while the other two versions are. So not a good example for plus games I guess.
But still, not the first time one version of a game is not crossbuy if it comes out later than the other versions.

You're right, but this is not the point. The game was announced and claimed to be crossbuy, yet those who are getting it with PS+ aren't getting the crossbuy feature.

That's the problem:

Lone Survivor was only CrossBuy for PS3/Vita though, they never said it would be CrossBuy with PS4.
