PS4 & PS Vita launch in China | News and Pictures inside

The Sony Playstation 4 was originally due to launch in January but was delayed due to unknown reasons (basically China govt tried to get Sony to region lock the console).

The official launch of the console today alongside PS Vita makes Sony the second foreign company in the Chinese market after Microsoft which launched its Xbox One in September. Gaming consoles brought into China’s mainland through unofficial channels were already widely available online and at the country’s many electronics markets. Please note that grey market sales for the PS4 are already higher than official sales and grey market sales for all video games consoles usually account for ~2m sales per year.

At a Sony store in downtown Shanghai, around 50 people queued to enter by small groups and buy consoles, games and the hand-held PlayStation Vita. First in line was Alex Liu, a 21-year-old college student who spent 4,900 yuan ($792) on the console, a game called Dynasty Warriors, and a handheld PlayStation Vita. Liu said he already spent more than 10,000 yuan on foreign versions of the console and games, including most of the six titles released in China. Still, he wanted the Chinese versions.

“I believe in the future of PS4 in China,” Liu said. “I came to support Sony so they can bring more games next year and the year after. Online games can never meet all of our needs.”

Cao Jiajun, who lined up at Sony’s store in Shanghai today to buy PS4 game titles said:
“The games have actually become affordable to everyone here, because our spending power has increased,” the 23-year-old engineer said. “I’d like to have some firsthand experience in stores near my home.”

The PS4 will sell for 2,899 yuan and the handheld PlayStation Vita will cost 1,299 yuan, Sony said. That compares with about 2,400 yuan per capita disposable income for an average urban resident, according to government data.

The Sony PS4 is not entirely region locked either: it can’t download foreign games or log into foreign PSN accounts, but it can play foreign PS4 game discs, connect to foreign servers, add friends from anywhere on the globe, and download patches for games from overseas. Similarly, the global version of the console will allow players to log in to Chinese PSN accounts, play Chinese PSN games on disc, and download patches from the Chinese PSN servers. This is great news for those who wish to buy on the grey market. Whilst the Chinese version is not fully unlocked it is better than the situation with Xbox One and will be seen by many as an edge over competitor consoles.

PlayStation Plus will be available with limitations in China, said Takehito Soeda, who oversees PlayStation’s strategy in the country. He declined to elaborate or provide a price.

“PlayStation is first a gaming device, and that’s what we are focusing on for the launch,” Soeda said. “We are also considering opportunities when it comes to social networks popular with Chinese users. Video services require a bit more study because that’s a tightly controlled area.” Sony have said they will be working with a number of local developers to bring online based games to PS4. One such game is King of Wushu.

Still, please bear in mind that console market in China is tiny compared to PC/Mobile.

Nice.

Wonder how well this will end up doing.

Will be really interested to know what % of PS4 are getting sold in Asia..

With middle east contributing a million unit towards PS4 sales and all other territories like Malaysia , Korea, India, Hongkong, China.. i think they will be playing a bit of a role towards any console future success..

Kinda weird that the PS4 and Vita both launched in the same day. Hope this has more life than the XB1.

Are all the developed/developing Chinese games MMOs? lol

Yes, I made a thread on Middle East success of PS4 recently.

Unfortunately there is no actual sales numbers for East Asia market.

However you can see this previous thread I created on Taipei Game Show to see how hyped people are in Taiwan for new PlayStation consoles. Similarly the console has sold faster than the PS3 in Hong Kong.

India is another market where PS4 is selling faster than PS3. Here is LTD sales of Sony consoles in India.

PS2 ~900k
PS3 ~300k
PS4 ~50k

Worth noting though that the above figures don't include grey market imports which will likely include a good number of sales.

Thank You..

In another post i think i saw that US share for PS4 sales have come down to like 30% or less..

So i certainly wander that how much Asia is contributing now?

If i have to go with my gut feeling.. i think
North Ameria ~35%
Europe ~35%
Asia ~ 15%
Southern Hemisphere (SA, Aus, NZ, BRA, etc) 15%

But it will be nice to get corrected

NA and Europe certainly still account for 70%+ so agree there. Perhaps 75%+?

But you're correct in that Asia, Middle East and RotW are now bigger markets. It used to be Japan was a big market but now they only account for ~0.6%. Smaller developing markets have seen huge growth to replace lower sales seen in Japan.

For those of you interested. Those purchasing official PS4 in China get two free games from Chinese developers.

First one is King of Wushu which is a popular 3D action MOBA game. This is already on PC but now comes to PS4 with extra content.

Second is Mr Pumpkin Adventure which is a puzzle game.

King of Wushu looks pretty awesome ....

The 1 million wasn't the entire Middle East, it was just the 6 GCC countries (Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, UAE, Qatar, & Saudi), the total population of those countries is ~50 million, which is only 25% of the Middle East population.

Sony marketing and selling it themselves? They aren't going through a regional third party? I don't see any non-Sony branding.

Also, will chinese PS4s be able to play on global servers? That would be pretty cool.

is that a Dynasty Warriors bundle?

my wife is Chinese and the few times I showed her it, she laughed so much at how ridiculous she thought the characters looked. that said, in terms of gameplay probably one of the best choices, and the general style (a handful of characters aside) and action should have a lot of appeal.

Sony needs to lower the price barrier of entry... China has almost no culture of such significant purchase points. it has nothing to do with the gross payments for a game either because Chinese consumer will spend more on DLC and RMT pay-to-win than westerners... but free barrier of entry is such a norm there.

they should release free versions of games like Driveclub, Dynasty Warriors, and some MOBA where basically every character or car is $1-2 and/or the game has in-game ads (partner with Tencent or Qihoo). the branding and gameplay appeal won't be the challenge but the content delivery and pricing will probably be by far the biggest determinant.

That's why you're awesome. ;)

Thanks haha

my wife is Chinese

Oh boy.... Here we go..... This will be an interesting read.

No, it's King Of Wushu

Three Kingdoms games are very popular in China, Dynasty Warriors included. The style can be seen in a number of games. You are using the opinion of one person to stereotype here.

It is the same price in UK as in China. Also this is the official price. People will buy on grey market at different price as well.

PS4 is not going to sell millions anyway, but it'll sell better than Xbox and to the people who want a console. The price is actually very good in China. It could have been much more expensive.

They bundled the console with a free to play game and have plans for other games to launch on the system using similar model.

I do like the attitude of that one guy who already bought the foreign versions of the games, but is rebuying all the Chinese ones because he believes in PS4 for China.

I don't think you need to be Chinese to see the characters look ridiculous, but if your wife is at all familiar with Chinese man hua or wusha tv shows or movies, that's actually pretty spot on with how they are stylized. I used to watch those shows with my parents and even as a kid I was cracking up. For some reason every time someone would do the bicycle kick flying and the same cloth flapping sound that every single show apparently shares, I would burst out laughing.

i wasn't stereotyping =p just giving an impression of someone that grew up knowing who the characters were... my work gives me a lot of anecdotes like this but i didn't mean them in any sort of conclusive or stereotyping, was just trying to add some personal thoughts to the thread lol

No worries. Sorry If I came across harsh (I know I did).

Just I hear a lot of people say stuff like this then come out with stuff that Isn't true.

Please accept my apologies for coming across the way I did.
