Story of Seasons is the "official" sequel to the Bokujou Monogatari (牧場物語) series, otherwise known as "Harvest Moon". However, since Natsume is now, not publishing the Bokujou Monogatari game, and XSeed doing so, the name has been changed since Natsume is currently owning the Harvest Moon IP. You can find more details about it here.

You start off as a bored adult, bored with your life. You then receive a flyer to embark on a journey to Oak Tree Town and be a farmer for one of the ranches. You decide to risk it all and go towards Oak Tree Town for a new life.

For the first time in the Bokujou Monogatari series, the game is now getting a collaboration with Nintendo. You can now grow Super Mario themed items such as the Star, Fire Flower and Mushroom plant.

Q. Any guides into how you marry a bachelor/ette?
A. I strongly discourage you to find a guide, as if you do it yourself, it will be something rewarding. However, if you desperately need it, Fogu has a flower event page. (See here)

Q. Any DLC or Amiibo compatibility?
A. No! (compared to ew, Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley)

Q. What online services are there?
A. You can connect to other people's farm to water their crops, you can also trade items between each other.

Q. What difficulty options are there?
A. There will be a normal mode and a seedling mode, the seedling mode is for new people introduced to the Bokujou Monogatari series. In Seedling Mode, you will get a 30% reduction on prices, double the amount of seeds you can buy and reduced stamina in what you can do.

Q. What are the changes between the Japanese and North American/European versions?
A. There are multiple changes such as additional blueprints added into the North American/European version, reviewing blueprints to see what things you will have to get, hints and a Play Clock, to see how long you have spent in the game.

Q. What pets are there?
A. The same 'ld pets, horses, dogs and cats are available as pets.

Q. Is there a workshop like in Harvest Moon: A New Beginning?
A. Yes, in fact there is.

Q. Why can't I own elephants on my farm?
A. Because they are available at the Safari! Go check it out!

Q. What wedding types are there?
A. There are three wedding types, the simple wedding is a Western-themed wedding, the super wedding is an Asian-styled wedding and the gorgeous wedding which is both. These wedding types will affect the time of you/bachelorette's pregancy.

In all seriousness, kinda excited for this. My last real HM experience was Friends of Mineral Town on the GBA, so this should be a nice leap. Shame it's coming out so close to Xenoblade though- I have a feeling i'm not going to touch this once that comes out.

Bloodborne, this, and Xenoblade. All games that last a long time. I got 40 hours into ANB really quick and just stopped for other thing, and I never came back. Hopefully I can actually get to marrying in this one. Looks like it will be Agate or Licorice.

Anyone know if the game has multiple save files? Thinking about getting this if I can share the cartridge with my wife.

Really considering picking this up, but I haven't played a pure Harvest Moon game (big Rune Factory fan) since the first GBA one. Always been a fan of the series but they kind of took a dive imo. How is this one?

I hope that there is some challenge to the farming, maintaining your farm and overall economy. I play these games mostly for that and the resource management but unfortunately for me, they are moving away from that and more to the in-game social aspects which I treat as diversions on the side.

This game has actually been catching my attention. The last game I played in the series was Harvest Moon Game Boy Color. I've really been meaning to get back into this series ever since, but somehow I never did. I regret missing out on the GBA one (I hear that one is considered a peak), but I've also been hearing good things about this one, too. I think it's adding some stuff to the core formula that I'm not super interested in, but while I wait for a Virtual Console release of Friends of Mineral Town (if it happens), I'm thinking of picking this up.

"While I'm waiting for the Game Boy Advance game, maybe I'll pick this one up."

I just find that really funny for some reason haha. Not that I don't understand it.

is the framerate finally "acceptable"? I remember the framerate would be 10-15 FPS at times in Harvest Moon:ANB

I preordered this from somewhere. But I don't remember where. Ah..

Klaus & Raeger are pretty handsome actually. HM/SoS bachelors are mostly duds lately, so it's nice to see some semi decent options finally.

Still no same sex relationships, which is ridiculous IMO. It's time to step into a the present here Marvelous.

maybe the next game will get same sex marriage, the initial game came out last year.

I don't think Marvelous Europe has mentioned this at all so, uh, guess I'll look forward to playing it sometime next year maybe.

Man, I picked up Natsume's Harvest Moon but haven't even touched it yet because too many games. But I really like the aesthetic of this one. Iris will definitely be my waifu.

The Harvest Moon series is my guilty pleasure.

I always buy the new games and spend like 15 hours max with each of them only to never touch it again. Those 15 hours are fantastic though.

*Lights the Europe Bat-Signal*

Still don't know about this. I did not like A New Beginning's town creation mode. Having to build everything and getting access to difference resources so slowly is what ultimately killed my interest in the game. I don't even know if once the whole town is built there is more to the game as I got so frustrated with this aspect and being limited in where I can go. I could never wrap my head around the garden tour to be successful at it either. Same for the farming contest.

If some of that is removed then maybe I could give this a shot but rather not waste money.

The REAL Harvest Moon, can't wait.

Fuck Natsume and that awful trash The Lost Valley that they tried to pass off as Harvest Moon.

Seriously? Get over it. Lost Valley is a Harvest Moon game.

You might like Story of Seasons then. While it does have the blueprints and object creation system, the town itself is a fixed layout. There are small plazas in the town that you can decorate with objects, which can influence the vendors at the Trade Depot if you place down the right combination of items at the right plaza, but you're not assigned the chore of laying out the entire town. You can also lay out the design of your own farm.

huh, didn't know this had a marriage system

I've never played a Harvest Moon game. I've played Rune Factory 4 though, and enjoyed that so I'll give this one a try.

I completely forgot about this. It's been a long time since I've played a straight up Harvest Moon game (I've been more into Rune Factory lately) and I think I'm ready to jump back in. I need something to do during my lunch at work anyways.

I've been thinking about buying this but I didn't enjoy A New Beginning very much. It took so long to get going and the building placement stuff got tiresome pretty quick. It's probably weird to complain about a Harvest Moon game taking too long, but it just seemed like it took so many days (in game) to get to a point where I actually had enough stuff to do each day. Hopefully you can get going a little quicker in this one.

yeah, progress has got a lot quicker than ANB.
But the tutorial is kinda slow.

Really excited for this. I haven't played through and entire one since the GameCube one, which I think is underrated.I''ve tried a couple since then but none really clicked.

Seems like a lot has changed since I've last really played. Hope it isn't too much since I really liked the simplicity of the old games like 64 and A Wonderful Life.

Did some reading and it seems like the general consensus is that unlocking new things is much quicker compared to A New Beginning, so I'll probably pick this up on Tuesday. Should be a nice change of pace after Bloodborne, haha.

We've been saying that forever though. "Maybe next time".

It's time now.
Luckily XSEED has passed it along to Marvelous as feedback at least. Of course they could not listen, but it's good XSEED supports it so much. I have some gay/bi friends that are really really hoping the next one does and I'm rooting for you guys, but I guess we'll have to wait and see :/ More options are great for everyone!

Marian the doctor (which is a guy) has a boyfriend, so I guess it's a small start.

I'd also really like to see a candidate with darker skin than light tan. Not that there is anything wrong with tan, but please more variety ._.

Really excited to play the game again though! I stopped playing it after the localization announcement to keep things fresh for the stateside release. I veeeery rarely ever go for the younger looking candidates in life sim games, but Mistel has a really nice personality so that's who I'm going for again. Rae and Klaus are also really great imo.

Thanks for the thread OP! :D

Will marrying different people have any sort of different benefits? I remember that being the case with early Harvest Moon games but don't think it did when I was playing ANB. Marriage felt kinda pointless in ANB because there was no difference in terms of what they provided you in the game. It would be nice if they gave you different benefits to your farming/animals/whatever.

all this shade at TLV smh. I honestly enjoyed that over any HM I've played after the GB releases

dunno who to pick. I like four girls; that's three too many

A Wonderful Life (GameCube) was perhaps the last Harvest Moon game I really, really, really enjoyed. Something about that game just really clicked with me or that I played it at the right time in my life.

Need to really look at some video of Story of Season to know if I'll actually pick it up. I still want to try Lost Valley to be honest but it having no town is really disappointing.

Happy to see there's a thread for this as I didn't notice any for previous releases, just a generic HM thread once. Also glad to see some of you guys already posting in here because it's particularly useful to share info for these games and trade tips. It will be interesting playing an entry at launch again so I won't be able to just look up the most efficient way of doing everything haha I namely just like finding out what item you need to store so you don't get hosed when you suddenly need to make something and the season has passed to grow the ingredient so you have to wait a year to do it... Speaking of which, this game does have one. Make sure to save 5 Turnip seeds, I'll spoiler mark why in case anyone considers it a spoiler:
You will need this to create the maker shed and when the blueprint becomes available, you won't be able to buy Turnip seeds anymore since they are a spring crop and the blueprint doesn't show up until either summer or fall, I forget which
.

For those worried about liking this after A New Beginning, don't worry, the tutorial is only a week in this game. It's a shame they made it the whole first season in ANB because that was actually a really solid HM entry once you got in far enough. Also, if you didn't like having to build things, in this game, the town is already built and arranged so you'll only have to make simpler items like maker sheds and decorations if you want them. Instead of the game focusing on building up the town like in ANB, this game is about bringing trade markets from other regions to grant you access to more items. It would probably be a good idea to grab the info about the trade markets and competing with other farms from Fogu and add that to the OP, actually.

They really neutered what we can trade in MP compared to ANB but I imagine we'll be able to help each other some all the same. I especially see people asking for turnip seeds later in the first year. Maybe at some point we can shoot friend requests to each other.

Gunning for Iris this time around.

Yesterday, I was in EB Games with my nine-year-old daughter killing time. She saw Harvest Moon Tale of Two Towns and wanted me to buy it for her strictly based off her fond memories of the SNES game. I rarely buy games blindly, so I check reviews online and discover that Harvest Moon A New Beginning seems to be the better game. The store doesn't have a copy, and calls to the four other stores in range also turn up zero copies. Then we discover the display boxes for Story of Seasons on the shelf. Needless to say, it eliminated all desire for any of the older Harvest Moon games.

This will be the first Harvest Moon game we have played since the SNES game. I'm buying two copies Tuesday morning. My daughter can't wait.

@Squall - I think you mean Turnip seeds, not Tulip seeds :) Easy to mix up!

@Zing - That's adorable, I hope you and your daughter have a fun time with the game!

I'm glad you looked into it, ToTT was not a very good entry and a bonus to playing this game is that you can participate in this thread as you discover things to share or have questions. I hope you and your daughter have a lot of fun playing together!

Wow, that's a pretty bad mix up haha Thanks for the catch! I've edited my post. That's what I get for posting so late.
