This is a teaser but the production value is so high it deserves it own thread.

This is going to be good!

For the curious:

People aren't that bothered about Shenmue III, right? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsS0fWIo9FY&list=PLOMn2ijJRJPGaBlP_N8aXrFyXolKaAfEY

How good is Shenmue and what make the games different from anything else out there? Is it a RPG? A linear experience? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5bSkggI5Ps and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cmuc5ia3go

I'm still not "getting" as to WHY it is completely different from anything else out there. Can you break it down for me? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhU37NDEThg

Sorry, I didn't play the first game. Can you give me a summary of Shenmue I? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rl60wMwVFEk

I know we are waiting for SEGA but can we at least play Shenmue I & II in HD running at 60fps right now? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_zB-R-Dbw8

Ok, that looks good. How about playing it in 4K @ 60fps? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FA1kxQWkjWY

Why do you call Yu Suzuki one of the “Gods of Video Gaming” next to Shigeru Miyamoto from Nintendo? Why is Yu Suzuki such a big deal? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arqoTc8EE5Y and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buuDqbouIJE

Can I have more details about Yu Suzuki, please? I really don't know much about him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZVtRSAvr2o

... but dat Shenmue Kickstarter.. Don’t you think that is shady? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwphQVMDJvY

Ok, you convinced me, I'm on the hype train. Now show me something funny: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOFuDSrUJH4

Seriously? Shenmue was really originally created for the Sega Saturn and it used 100% of the machine's power? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-YxOpZ7mDo

A young man who has yet to know his potential,

This potential is a power that could either destroy him or realize his will,

The path he must traverse, fraught with adversity, I await whilst praying,

For this destiny, predetermined since ancient times,

A pitch black night unfolds with the morning star as its only light,

And thus the saga… Begins…

The return of Shenmue and Yu Suzuki is the best thing to happen to the gaming industry in the past 14 years

Nice to see Happy Console Gamer in there. That guy runs an underrated channel and is a rare spark of good vibes and enthusiasm in the well of despair and trolling that makes up the majority of Youtube's gaming channels.

So, ahem, you can play the Dreamcast versions of Shenmue I and II in widescreen and 1080p using DCEmul. And fans have created the Shenmue I undub, which lets you play Shenmue I with japanese audio. They even patched the undub's region to be PAL, so the save imports into the European version of Shenmue II.

That's actually where the widescreen and HD footage in the video comes from.

I just assumed Dreamcast emulation was garbage. It actually works well enough for a full playthrough?

I must be getting old because my first thoughts were "put that Saturn on a flat surface and clean your goddam room!"

Seriously though, it looks cool and glad to see Happy Console Gamer and Adam Koralik.

Holy crap
Maybe I should just go the emulation route instead of hoping Sega graces us with an HD Remaster

Definitely should go with both, especially IF the HD Remastered route include the Game-Transfer feature. That feature makes a MASSIVE difference in respect to game immersion.

Here's a little more background information on the project

In 1999, a revolutionary video game hit the brand new Sega Dreamcast.
Shenmue, auteur-creator Yu Suzuki’s impressive, interactive R.P.G. was developed to be the definitive hit that would drive sales of the fledging console and set a high bar for what gamers could expect from the state of the art gaming tech presented by this, the first sixth generation console to be released.

Unfortunately, it didn’t work out as planned.

Although Shenmue was years ahead of its time, and no matter how revolutionary and immersive, the development and production of such a cutting edge game burned up what was rumoured to be seventy million dollars, which made it an enormous risk.

And the risk wasn’t just for the game. It was for the console itself.

Every console needs its primary driver, and for the Dreamcast, Shenmue would be it.

Or not.

Although it has been fifteen years since its release, Shenmue remains one of the most popular and beloved games of all time, and a third game to finally finish the story has been a fixture on gamers’ Most Wanted lists for years.

Until June of 2015 when their dreams came true and blew Kickstarter off the net until they could reboot their servers for a deluge of adoring fans.

Begun well before the news that Shemue III was announced at E3, A Gamer’s Journey: The Definitive History of Shenmue was designed to tell the story of this unparalleled game – a financial flop that generated a dedicated following of hardcore fans worldwide who showed their unending support on YouTube, message boards, websites and beyond. Originally, this feature documentary was filmmaker and longtime Shenmue fan Adam Sipione’s Hail Mary pass to help galvanize the community and tell the world that there was indeed a fan base hungry for more of the game they loved so much.

And then it happened anyway!

So now, our mandate has grown.

Through interviews with fans, voice actors, critics and creators, A Gamer’s Journey will take you deeper into the world of Shenmue as Adam and the Definitive Film team at FauxPop Media discover what happened to this inspiring game that had such an impact on so many.

We’ll find out how Shenmue came back with a vengeance, and, hopefully, we’ll show fans what lies ahead for this game that is perhaps now finally ready for its time.

I guess the tone of the documentary has radically changed with the E3 announcement.

It's a life simulator

Your job is to find clues to the whereabouts of your father killer, but in between that you can stop and smell the roses, collect some toys, find a job to pay off your gambling addiction, feed your cat, practice martial arts, or go to the local arcade an play some games.

You wrote "DCEmul" but I can't find an emulator by that name. Did you mean Demul? I got that up and running along with the PAL version of the undub. I'm seeing an issue where the fullscreen mode switches to a strange aspect ratio (vertically stretched). I assume that's related to the PAL thing but I can probably get by it with a borderless windowed program.

Thanks for the suggestion!

There should be a way to force it to 4:3. Also, the undub you are using is missing a lot of audio for the free quest dialog sections, right? That's one reason I decided against the undub - that, and the fact that Ryo also tends to repeat the first question for each line instead of the actual phrase.

Some people say NullDC is better but DEmul is the only way to play it in an emulator without graphical glitches. The only problem I've run into is glitchy crowd sounds In Doubuita.

Op you are aware caps is screaming on text right ? And I'm down to learn more I entered this thread to learn more but frankly the caps kind of put me off ,not enough that I won't watch them, but enough to say make this comment . Your enthusiasm for this game isn't the world enthusiasm for this game .

I noticed and adjusted. I created the OP with haste and now I am back I am able to adjust it.

"Your enthusiasm for this game isn't the world enthusiasm for this game ."

Oh, come on. Everyone knows that.

Can someone link the GT reaction thread? Was a great thread lol.

Anyway I hope it hits at least $5M so it's quite open, though I am sad that like most KS projects, they started low because they wanted to make sure it would get funded.

Had they started at $10M I'm SURE they would have hit it.

This is pretty much what I was calling for in the other thread. This is what the campaign needs to explain to other people what the game is like and why they should care. I haven't played either of the first two games, and this video is extremely exciting to me.

It might be better to wait until the full video is out, but...Spread this around, people! Twitter, Facebook, wherever.

edit: I guess should clarify I have nothing to do with the video or the Shenmue 3 campaign. Just wanna see this game be as successful as it can be.

There seems to be two versions of the undub. One that cuts some stuff to get the game to fit on an 80 minute CDR and another that doesn't. Both versions are reportedly missing some English subtitles for minor characters since the English version of the game doesn't include those lines at all but the notes for the untouched version say that there are no content cuts. I won't have time to really test it out until the weekend though.

I also have to look into how to get the game to display in proper widescreen.

edit: I assume there's no way to play in true 60 FPS? Emulators usually don't allow that kind of stuff but I've seen 60 FPS shenmue clips on Youtube.

Wait is this game an RPG? Or a linear experience?

It was the first open world console game. But instead of the large, sparse open worlds we have today, Shenmue focused more on packing a ton of detail into a smaller world.

The genre is hard to classify. It's an action-adventure/RPG/fighter, I guess you could say.

That teaser was so epic! Wow! Can't wait for the full thing to come out.

Shenmue is just so damn special. The fans are the best in gaming too.

Those 60 fps ones are interpolated. If you look closely, you can see some of the typical motion interpolation artifacts.

WOWOWOWOW! How did I miss this? It's an absolute must watch for fans and newcomers. It's really hard to explain just why Shenmue is so amazing, but this guy explains it extremely well!

I'd also add this analysis:

I finally decided to jump in on this series. I just imported Shenmue 1 from PAL-land. I figured I will play the pal versions on my DC.

My Utopia Boot disc should let me play them right? And my PVM can handle 50hz and 60hz so am I all set?
