Mario Maker Update OUT NOW - Checkpoints, Stackable Power Ups & More!

With the addition of mid-level checkpoints, users now have the option to add flags to their levels, allowing players to start at the selected point if they lose a life – rather than having to start over at the beginning of the level. Players can choose to edit and re-upload their own levels, or create new levels from scratch using this feature. Shaking an arrow sign item from the course parts palette will allow you to place a checkpoint flag.

Following the update, players can also insert power-ups that are dependent on Mario’s status. For example, by attaching a Super Mushroom to a Fire Flower and placing it inside a block, Mario will receive the Super Mushroom when he is small, and the Fire Flower when he is large.

The software update also introduces Event Courses in the game’s Course World online hub. Event Courses will feature levels from partner creators outside Nintendo. One of the first Event Courses will be “Ship Love,” the winning level from the “hackathon” event that was held at Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park earlier this year. Facebook is the first outside partner in the United States to design a level for Super Mario Maker; employees had the opportunity to design and present their creations to a panel of judges before the winning level was selected.

The level that was featured in the final round of the Omegathon event at this year’s Penny Arcade Expo event will also be available for players to experience shortly after the update goes live. New Event Courses will be added to the listing on an ongoing basis, some of which may even feature new Mystery Mushroom transformations. Additionally, a new Official Makers section in Course World will be added after downloading the update, featuring specially selected courses, including some created by Nintendo.

Also they added a an even harder gnat-swatting game, which will unlock a new costume to use in SMB themed levels..

Edit: Upated version is version 1.20

I can't even beat the normal level minigame. There is literally no time to swat out those fucking tiny flies and bombs. FML.

The server is still undergoing maintenance so you can only do create mode now... damn I wanted to check out the new featured levels thing... might try to beat that gnat game..

When they say "edit and re-upload your levels" do they mean they added a way to do that without losing the ID and play stats for it or no?

Seems like NoA confirmed a new costume.

The Tri-Force Heroes costume has some weird hit detection (I couldn't get some of the coins, for instance), but I'm loving the changes to the game.

Two Arino levels down. Eh, something to note, I guess ... do enemy stacks pause for a second after you jump on them? Can't remember if they did that prior to the update.

The Power-Up stacking is pretty limited. You can only stick Mushrooms onto Fire Flowers and the "special" Power-Up (Leaf/Cape/Propeller). It doesn't seem to work on Mystery Mushrooms, although it remembers it if you switch between themes.

You can't stack Fire Flowers onto Special Power-Ups, or the reverse. You can't overlap a 1up onto anything. You can't stick a coin onto a Starman (for Continuous Starman).

Noticed Mary O. gives tips sometimes when you pause, now.

I think you just have to beat one to get the costume, I thought you had to complete them all but maybe that was a translation error.

I think you're right. Just beat the 3rd...no costume. I assume you get the single costume for beating any of the 3 levels

Wait, are flags and checkpoints the same?. So the creator can place flags everywhere to upload a super hard level, and people have to beat the whole thing in one go?

Yeah, beating one seems to do it. I was under the assumption that each stage with a mystery mushroom beside it had a new costume. Besides the gnat game and the event levels, seems like there's still seven costumes unaccounted for. Data miners will probably have a new sprite sheet up by the end of the night if it's not already with all of the costumes.

I wonder if they are for future events or can be unlocked via 100-mario mode

That new Gnat Attack is impossible. I barely made it to the second stage twice but then it gets ridiculous.

I unlocked all 100 original costumes but I guess I will not be able to unlock everything now.

Updated! :D

It's cool to finally play Kacho's levels!

I'm thinking about updating some of my old levels to add a checkpoint and incremental power-ups... Maybe this way some of them will have a higher % of completion lol -__-

I just finished a Castle level I was designing last afternoon and added a checkpoint before the boss room door. It's called Corridors of Fire if someone want give ir a try ^^'

not understanding the "Official" section in makers..

it's levels made by characters from the game like Mary O and Coursebot? I thought it was gonna be like Miyamoto levels or something or are these pseudonyms?

Parakeet and Soundfrog don't have any levels... lol

edit: lmao these Mary O levels are hilarious and filled with miiverse comments I can't stop laughing!

There are now impossible to complete levels online because they fixed the invisible block glitch with this patch.

I imagine someone is going to figure out a way to cheese it eventually

The sad part is, I just played a "Glitch" course the other day that used them, that was structured like a puzzle stage. It was surprisingly clever and fair, as long as you paid attention.

If you drop down a door, and tap on it, it knocks on the door. Do it repeatedly, and
Weird Mario pops out with a pose. He has several, and they seem to change with the current Game Style.

SMW has a cape one and a yoshi one.

SMB3 has one for raccoon, tanooki, statue (tanooki), frog, and hammer

NSMBU has one for propeller, flying squirrel, ice, penguin, and mini
