so my left ear is "clogged" with ear wax and i can feel some pressure in my ear. im pretty sure its ear wax. i tried doing some home remedies like pouring some peroxide and water in my ear, and even using the big tear-drop shaped tube filled with hot water but i ended up squirting water in my ear and that made it a lot worse.

should i even bother going to a pharmacy and trying some over the counter stuff or just go straight to a doctor? how serious is something like this? should i go ASAP or do i have a couple days? and i dont have any insurance, so any idea how much this might cost me?

I did once. I use q-tips but you can end up pushing wax further down into the ear and thusly it accumulates and you can't get it out. They shot this water gun in my ear and it hurt! Big glob of wax came out though so it definitely was good it came out. It only happened once though so I dont know how it happens.

Just go to the doctor and get your ears drained.

They sell these "ear draining candles" at the pharmacy but I hear they're no good, and may actually **** your ears up.

I had to do that once when I was about 10. They just flush your ears..gross, but it works. It feels weird, like the water is going to go through your head and come out your other ear. But yeah.

If you have to go to the doctor to get it taken care of, then at least you know it'll get done. I had to once, but I haven't since. If it's an ongoing issue just make sure you always clean your ears, swab with q-tips, and periodically soak them with just plain warm water before swabbing.

I actually did it about a month or so back. Feels really weird and my doctor showed me what came out afterwards. I was in a state of amazement and shock, I'll tell you that. But it's like 10 minutes, and your ears will be fine afterwards.

My doctor scraped it out instead of using fluids or whatever. I forgot why, but there was some reason. Worked, though.

EEEK. That sounds hell of painful.

Just go to the doc and get them flushed. Then watch some movies in 5.1. Seriously, you don't realize how much more you can hear once you get your ears cleaned. It's teh raddast!

Ever since I had my wisdom teeth out, I've had to pop my ears constantly because of the pressure. I asked a doctor, and he said it was a minor problem, but hard to correct. Was he full of it?

yeah, you're not supposed to clean your ear canals with those things. qtips are the reason i have this "problem".

am i going to have to go to the doctor 2 times? or can everything be done in 1 visit? and does anyone know roughly how much it will cost?

Same thing happened to me. Man it sucked to be half-deaf.

Ya i've had to do it a couple of times, feels reeeeeeally weird when they shoot water down your ear but it should get the job done, and i'd rather them do it than try myself.

You'll be *puke* to see what comes out of your ear though, like black/dark brown wax sh*t now floating around in a container of water... not a pretty sight. :lol I was really quite shocked.

You need to put olive oil in your ears for a few days before having your ears flushed.

Warm up some olive oil (not too hot that it would burn) and lie on your side. Have someone use an eye dropper to put a few drops in your ears. Wait about 15 minutes. This softens the wax in your ears so it won't stick when the doctor attempts to flush it out.

If you don't it WILL HURT and the doctor won't be able to get it all out in one visit.

Controversy

Ear candling is generally classified as pseudoscience or quackery by mainstream medicine, as no scientific evidence supports it. Skeptics point out that that there is no mechanism by which the candle could conceivably draw out anything from the ear, and that a sufficient vacuum to do so could not possibly be generated.[2] Nor could the candle create a sufficiently high temperature to "melt" the earwax as is sometimes claimed.Researchers at the Spokane Ear, Nose, and Throat Clinic have concluded that ear candling is ineffective at creating a vacuum and removing impurities from the ear, and may result in injuries [3].

Some practitioners of ear candling show accumulations of "wax" inside used candles as evidence that they are effective. However, one European manufacturer, Biosun, points out that these are in fact products of combustion of the candle, which form inside the candle even when it is not placed inside the ear.

A list of claims, from cleansing the ear canal and curing infections to clearing the eyes and purifying the blood, can be found on the Quackwatch website[4].

Dangers

Placing a candle inside the ear can potentially lead to burns, infection, obstruction of the ear canal and perforation of the eardrum. One particular concern is wax dripping into the ear, which can cause internal burning and blockage. [5] Some ear candles are designed with a plug inside to help prevent this, and others are designed to be self-extinguishing. However, most ear candles are not designed this way, leaving sensitive membranes in the ears exposed to hot wax and ash that can do permanent damage. In a study done by Health Canada, 122 ear specialists were interviewed by a group of doctors. 21 cases of damage done from ear candling were reported. Thirteen people were burned by ear candles, and another seven had their ears blocked with wax from ear candles. One person received a punctured ear drum. [6] Ear candles can be dangerous even when used properly.

"Quackery is a derogatory term used to describe the unethical practice of promising health-related benefits for which there is little or no basis"

"A pseudoscience is any body of alleged knowledge, methodology, belief, or practice that is portrayed as scientific but diverges from the required standards for scientific work or is unsupported by adequate scientific research to justify its claims"

I had to go to the doctor once, but I avoided it a time after that.

Here are some protips:
-Don't abuse Qtips, or any other thing you can stick it your ear.
-Try filling up a bottle with hot water and lie your head on it like a pillow (keep it under your ear). The idea here it to try and "melt" your earwax and have it drain out
-use earwax drops from a pharmacy. They won't work right away, but after a day or two the earwax should clump up and come right out

The last time I used Qtips, I got wax stuck in my ear so I went to buy the water/peroxide combo that you spoke of with the tear-drop shaped water-squirting device :lol

The thing is, after that incident, I went back to Walgreens and got that Ototek loop and it works really really well. I highly recommend it for ear wax cleaning, I haven't had a problem with it and it's idiot-proof thanks to the round plastic guard.

You could have a bacterial ear infection. I've had it twice in my life - my ear felt "clogged" and I couldn't hear anything out of it. The doc took one look and knew what it was. He prescribed some ear drops with an antibiotic and it cleared up in a few days.

Go see your doctor as soon as you can to get it taken care of one way or the other.

I had the exact same situation - just get it done real quick at the doctor's; there's a good chance they won't charge you, because it takes about 5 minutes.

As mentioned, whatever you do, do NOT use ear candles. DO NOT USE. See a doctor.

When my ears get clogged, I just use a syringe and continually blast hot water into my ear until the crap gets loose and falls out. It works every time, just have to be patient since really hard ear wax can take a while to soften.

I use a paperclip on occasion(after seeing the loop at the store). Works pretty well.

We took a guy on our floor to the ER the other night because of the cotton from a plastic cu-tip got stuck in his ear after it came off the end. What's funny is he's here to be an EMT. :lol :lol :lol

I keep getting horrible ear pains that the doctor keeps saying is built up earwax, but its always the same ear and it hurts after they clear it out. Makes no sense.

Ok. Please listen to me. I had two (yes, two) ear infections in early '05.

-DO NOT KEEP USING HYDROGEN PEROXIDE. Seriously. I learned this the hard way. It will just make things more irritated. Use no more than one capful, if it works, great. If there's no improvement after a couple days (or even if there is) DON'T KEEP USING IT. You already have used it, so there's nothing else you can do. If you go to the doctor or a specialist, they may squirt peroxide in your ears, but at extremely high pressure -- so hard that it'll all drain right back into a cup (plus, you're sitting up). But, that's all the more reason to not use it on your own -- it is not a good idea to use peroxide all of the time, as it will just dry and irritate the hell out of your ears... especially as the summer ends and the temperature gets cooler. Unless the doctor wants to use it, just stay away from hydrogen peroxide for the ear at all other times, honestly.

Ear wax removal drops are a joke, if you ask me. All debrox ever did for me was make the fluid thicker and all the more inclined to stay stuck in my ears. I'd stay away. Same for the crap they sell that treats swimmer's ear. It feels like squirting rubbing alcohol into your ears.

Go see an ear, throat, and nose specialist. They'll suck the fluid out of your ears after flushing it out with a water and vinegar mixture or peroxide. They may also give you some antibacterial (e.g. Zithromax) and decongestant (e.g. Amitex) pills, and ear drops that act as a steroid. This will all depend on how bad your ear(s) are.

Buy cotton balls and securely put them in both of your ears while you take a shower. You will need to do this for a LONG TIME, even if you go to a doctor. For example, I used cotton balls in the ear while showering from late '04/early '05 all the way to May/June this year. Just get used to it and have more than enough available. Only now can I finally expose my ears to water normally without having to worry about them getting super irritated. Thank god I'm not a big fan of swimming.

Also, cardio helps, believe it or not. Get yourself sweating like crazy by doing something such as jogging a lot. In the summer especially, this really helps accelerate draining any extra fluid you may have in your ears.

If your feel like itching your ears... don't. And whatever you do, don't put pressure on the lobe and kind of move it around to try and get rid of some of the irritation -- you'll just make things worse. Keep your fingers off and out of your ears. It's hard, but believe me, worth it. Buy a heating pad if you have to. Just make sure it's one you can keep clean.

If you use q-tips, never put them in the ear canal. I'd advise not using them period while your ear is bothering you, as you'll feel more naturally inclined to stick the q-tip further into your ear and try to dig out whatever is in there. That's the worst thing you can do, though. You'll just a. irritate the skin in your ears (which is extremely sensitive) even more, and b. push the fluids back further.

I had to have some ear wax removed when I was like 15. Doctor flushed my ear with some kind of liquid... a ****ing giant ball of wax came out. It was insanely huge.

My gf gets like 4 ear infections per year. One of her ears is deformed, and the tube gets filled with wax that doesn't come out and infects the ear. So she has to go to the doctor 2 times a year to get the wax out.

I don't know much more about it.

Both. Externally it just looks like the top part is folded onto itself. It's not that noticable. :p

Yeah, I dunno if its the air pressure from loud bass or manky pads but sometimes I get sore ears from DJing and the doc usually flushes out the wax build-up with this warm water from a syringe thing. I love it, it feels like I have freakin super-hearing afterwards...

GO TO THE ****ING DOCTOR.

Seriously... all they do is spray water in your ears with a soft point syringe and it comes right out.

Definitely go home and watch movies in 5.1 afterward... you never really heard surround sound unless you heard it with clean ears.

You're like the second person who's mentioned that in this thread. I've never had any ear problems, but I think I'm going to schedule an appointment anyway just to see if a professional cleaning will improve my home theater experience :)

Yeah, I had a wax build up in my right ear which I just ignored because I assumed it wasn't a big deal. Then it started to get annoying, it would intermittently affect my hearing, but still I ignored it like a jackass. Eventually my ear started to ache, so I went to the doctor and he flushed it out with a shot of water. No big deal. But as soon as I got to the car I realised I could hear everything on my right side about twice as loud as I could before. For a few hours I was convinced I could've heard a pin drop. It was sort of cool, in a negligent way.

You can get a small simple hairpin that is quite apt at the task of cleaning ears; should just be a small loop.

Clean your ears out with it often (every couple weeks, to a month). As long as you're extremely careful, and use sound and feel to gauge how far it can go, you won't have any problems.

But if you haven't cleaned them in a while (6+ months), go see a doctor first and get them to flush your ears out properly before doing it.

Also helps a lot to clean the ear out after taking showers; use the hair pin first, then finish up with a q-tip.

I've done this for the past 20 years... and er... I've had one ear infection.

Allow me to join in the chorus of folks suggesting you go to the doctor and have them clean out your ears. I've had to have it done a couple of times and it's no big deal: as mentioned, they take a mild warm water and peroxide mix and blast it in your ears. This isn't painful, just odd and a bit intense. It takes all of ten minutes. If you don't have insurance it'll depend on how much a regular trip to the doctor costs. Say $75 or so? It's an extrordinarily minor thing for them to take care of so it's not like you'll rack up massive costs or anything.

Yeah, back in college I just woke up one day with this pressure in my ear that was bordering on painful. I had trouble hearing as well, which progressively got worse through the day, as did the pain. At first, I thought it was an ear infection or something. Eventually it got to the point where everything from one side was just muffled sounds, so I went to the health services building on campus. The doctor just did like most people are saying, and blasted my ears with a spray bottle with a needle attachment at the nozzle with some warm water. Don't remember if there was peroxide or anything like that. Flushed a rather good-sized chunk of wax out of each ear.
