READY TO FIGHT! EVERYONE READY FOR A SUPER SONIC RUMBLE!?

SONIC THE FIGHTERS!

sonic-the-fighters.jpg

*Cough* Just had to do that :'). Fighting games always have great announcers.

Anyway, Sonic jumps into the 3rd Dimension for a rumble with the best of them, with the goal being collecting all eight (they found an extra one?) Chaos Emeralds to fly a ship to the new Death Egg.

Sonic and friends each have an Emerald and are fighting to collect them all. Who's going to win? And who is going to save the world?! YOU DECIDE!

This is a fighting game developed by Sega Division AM2, who are known for the Virtual Fighter series but also made other games like Fighting Vipers and Fighters Megamix....you know, the fighting game with the car :D?

6CCO1.png

So they are known for making some really fun games, so do they do Sonic and company justice with his very first fighting game? I think they do even if the game has some issues.

You have a number of buttons to use; Attack, Kick, Shield, and Grab. Sounds simple but imputing combos feels very odd to me though it could just be from the fact I'm used to playing 2D Fighters (this is a 3D fighter). It works though and each playable character has different attacks.

Sonic, the Blue Blur rolls around at the speed of sound spindashing into his foes, making them confused rolling around them and has a wind up punch to use.
sonic-pose2.jpg

Tails 'Miles' Prower has the ability to attack with his tails, spindash like Sonic and has a really good grab that picks up the foe and slams them into the ground.
Tails_pose_23.gif

Our boy Knuckles joins the fight too, punching and gliding his way into the battle. He can spindash as well in addition to having powerful punch attacks. He also doesn't chuckle either ;).
knuckles-pose2.jpg

The last three 'major' characters here are Amy Rose (Sonic CD), Espio (Knuckles Chaotix) and Fang (Sonic Triple Trouble).

Amy uses her hammer to attack
50.png

Espio uses his tongue to attack alongside turning invisible at points of the match.

Fang has a pop-gun that shoots powerful attacks and jumps quite high in the air.

So, the cast is filled with friends we meet over the course of this retrospective but we got some new faces and one returning one. Bark & Bean are new characters made for this game (which also appear in Megamix) while Robotnik returns as a boss and extra fighters in the PS3/360 version of this game.

We also got a character that is both new and old; Honey.
2016935-839612_stf_honey_true_model.png

She looks to be a new character....but she really is a Sonic-themed version of this character from the game 'Fighting Vipers'
honey-1.gif

Quite.....the different character honestly XD! She was an unfinished character in the original Sonic the Fighters but when the game released on PS3/360 in 2013, they restored her and Robotnik for the game as 'bonuses'. Nice to see added content given to a older game :).

LETS FIGHT!

Okay, the stages in Sonic the Fighters are a mix of new locations and new parts of older zones in Sonic history.

South Island from Sonic 2 turns into a arena, same with Mushroom Hill and Casino Night as well:

The stages all come with a great score that, like every Sonic game, sounds great :).

Killer soundtrack and one that really matches the mood of the fights!

FINAL ROUND!

The last bit of information to cover is the 2013 re-release of the game, as it really is a great version. Not only is Dr. Robotnik a playable character and Honey is restored (was unfinished in the original/GC & PS2 release in Gems Collection) but we got online added into the game! Adds a lot and its fun to brawl with our friends online.

You can also play this game on the GC (US/JP) or PS2 (EU) through Gems Collection too :).

GAME OVER!

So, did I enjoy this game? It was fun to go back to it and while it took a while to get used to the mechanics, they are fun and rewarding when you get used to it. Its not the best fighting game ever made by a long shot and AM2 did better work on other projects during this era (VF2, Fighting Vipers, Fighters Megamix) but for Sonic's first round in the ring, he did well.

supersonic-pose.jpg

Spat out some teeth and got a few bruses but still made it through the match. He will jump into the ring for round two with Sonic Battle and will talk about that much latter :).

Next up on the list is Sonic 1 & 2 Mega Drive/Game Gear and hope you all enjoy that :D!

Still waiting for a damn sequel, Sega. The have more than enough characters.

We really could have a large cast to play with:
-Sonic
-Tails
-Knuckles
-Amy
-Shadow
-Vector
-Espio
-Silver (will be the most OP character in the game XD)
-Blaze
-Eggman
-Jet the Hawk
-Mighty
-Werehog
-Rouge
-Omega
-Gamma
-Metal Sonic
-Big the Cat
-Sally Acorn
-Rotor
-Bunny Rabot
-Nicole
-Antone

A tighter version of Sonic the Fighters would be great. Game always felt too sticky for me to really like, but it was a neat foray into something other than the running adventures of Sonic.

I put a couple hours into this game when Gems Collection came out, and I don't remember the soundtrack being this decent; that canyon cruise song is pretty nice.

Anyway, it's not a game I would recommend checking out for any reason beyond a history lesson/curiosity, but I do absolutely love early 3D fighters like this, and I was always really glad it was included on Gems collection. And I think it actually did a pretty good job of representing the Sonic series despite its pretty severe limitations.

This game is the inspiration for much of Sonic's move set in Smash Bros., so it's worth checking out just for that.

And hell, bring in the current cast of the comics if possible.

Funny that this thread comes up now, because just over this weekend I discovered that, as with any really obscure fighter, somebody has taken this game seriously and run a tournament.

It's got some interesting mechanics, and the barrier system isn't quite as stupid as I used to think. The graphics are also really nice for the time, and I love the super-animated, cartoony animations.

I agree, for something that could of went badly wrong, it was a really solid first shot at making Sonic into a fighter.

Would easily be open to a sequel that fixes issues from the original, brings back some of the older cast (Mighty, Ray, Fang) all the while having the new Modern/Dreamcast Era cast join the fight.

For what its worth, Sega likes the game, as they let Archie use it for adapting the Unleashed adaptation for the comic!

Didn't know about that tournament XD! Promised this thread was coming next for the retrospective because you guys voted for it :). Happy accident I suppose :D.

The visuals and presentation to Sonic the Fighters is really impressive for the time and did a great job capturing the 'look' and 'style' of Sonic for sure.

All hail Dr. Robotonic. I wish Fang the Sniper made it back into the rotation of Sonic and Friends.

Can't wait for 8-bit Sonic 2. That was my first video game I ever owned (Game Gear version)

Playing it now for the thread and its a lot of fun! Gotta thank Clement's playthrough of that game for helping me remember where all the Chaos Emeralds are XD!

Games alright.

Sonic battle is better

Neither got a sequel, why?

If sega were to go about making a sonic fight game, something in the style of those naruto games might work.

When i discovered this game as akid it blew my mind.
This game gave us one of the best characters that made it to the Archie comics-
OH-MY-GOD-Bean-Anoys-Sonic-bean-the-dynamite-30168769-635-316.jpg

Bean's theme is awesome too

It's fun to mess around in, dunno about balance, but hey it's fun.

Oh and the archie comic adaptation of Sonic the Fighters was ace too, especially since it took place during Sonic Unleashed, co-starring characters from Adv. of Sonic cartoon and had a flashback to Sonic 2 for the Game Gear.

Its a fun fighter, so I completely agree :).

Never saw that part of the comic before with Bean XD! That panel is funny, gotta start reading the comic again at some point.....

It's from when Ian Flynn was the author on the comic, basically when he was writing the first year of the comic.
You can always start form #160 if you want as from then on he begins working out stuff from previous stories and introduces his own plots and Sonic game stories.

When I start reading the series again, will start with issues #160 for sure. Thank you Tizoc for the advice :).

There was a Saturn version planned at some point, my first experience of it was in the Sonic Gems Collection and its a pretty good fighter to be quite honest. There's also a nice fighter pack on PSN with this, Virtua Fighter 2 and Fighting Vipers for a nice price.

Maybe it was planed but due to the Saturn being replaced with the Dreamcast not long after, they scrapped the port.

.....Through the fact they never bothered to port it to the Dreamcast was surprising when it could of done decently on that.

This game was... passable. Played for the first time on Gems Collection, and then I got it on the 360, which reminds me... why didn't Sonic R get a re-release?!

I love the Archie comics. They give the characters so much personality and life, I need to catch back up. That reaction that Sonic has is perfect.

I didn't get to play Sonic the Fighters until the Gems collection on Gamecube. I didn't know much about fighting games back then so I didn't pay it any attention but now that I'm really into fighters I'll probably pick it up on Xbox 360 eventually.

It likely was part of the plans, but Sega shifted focus on porting games to Steam (it costs more money to make stuff appear on PSN/XBLA servers or something......).

We was going to get more stuff too (Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue) but due to low sales of the Heritage Collection games (Nights, SA2, Jet Set Radio), they scrapped the idea.

Maybe they could make a Sega Mega Collection for this current gen in the future or something :).

You can try it for 60 seconds on the 360. Yes, the ol' timed demo. The 360 port is only $5 but those very brief demos do the trick for me. Seems like an okay game.

There's no platinum but you can get every single PS3 trophy with one arcade mode playthrough, I did it the other day when picking up the fighters pack. Took less than 10 minutes.

I was lucky enough to actually have this game in a nearby arcade when I was younger, and I knew how rare it was, so I made it my main game there. I thought it was a lot of fun, and I was dreaming of an updated post-Sonic-Adventure-2 version. I agree that Metal Sonic was complete bullshit, but it was always great when I actually beat it. Robotnik was easier, but it really sucked the few times I lost to him, since that's an instant game over.

The pages of the Archie adaptation of Sonic Unleashed posted earlier seem good. Is the rest of the adaptation worth checking out?

Most of Sonic moves from fighter ended up being recycled for Sonic in Smash Bros.

Anyway I loved playing the game, though I just kept sticking with Sonic since he was the only character that fitted with my style.

Woah, woah. Did Sonic just fight Segata Sanshiro?

FYI The latest Sonic Special "Speed of Sound" features the entire "Champions" (Sonic: The Fighters) arc along with all of Team Treasure Tango (A comical adventure starring Blaze, Amy Rose, Cream along with Bean and others) and more for $8.99. It's worth it for Champions alone and can be picked up both digitally and physically. It's a good book if you're a newcomer to the comic and need to be up to speed with Archie Sonic.

Treasure team tango is good. They in one swoop justified shadows bike.

Be weary though the post 160 and post reboot stuff has good and bad. Worlds unite, a sega capcom crossover and sequel to worlds collide, a megaman sonic crossover, is kinda raw ass.So your milage may very if you get more into the comics.

This game has the single greatest 3D models of Sonic characters in the history of the franchise. Those polygons are just... So nice.

I'd love a classic style Sonic game that looked just like that, polygons and all. Sonic Jam came close with its overworld section but it's not a patch on this game.

I still wonder if this game was one of the first that actually had something akin to "Custom Combos" in a 3D fighter. It was actually fun playing around with burning up Shields in the Gems collection version to try and see what I could find.

But in any case...count me in as another who would love AM2 to make another game in this vein. If ever was a time and means to try and convey that AM2's fighting games are not as difficult to play as one would think, maybe Sonic could follow Pikachu's example.

The pages of the Archie adaptation of Sonic Unleashed posted earlier seem good. Is the rest of the adaptation worth checking out?
The post-reboot stuff (which has thus far loosely been the plot of Unleashed) is pretty good in general, but the Fighters issues in particular are some of the comic's finest work.

Was Honey exclusive to a certain version of the game? I don't recognize her, and my experience is only with the Sonic Gems Collection (GC) version.

This is literally the only traditional fighter i've ever put any time in.

It takes like 20 minutes to get every achievement & yet is worth 400 gamerscore instead of the usual 200. Someone was feeling generous that day.

XBLA/PSN release added her back in. Her model was always in every prior version but had to be hacked before.

Flynn must love the heck out of this game considering how damn much he uses Bean & Bark (& Metal Sonic for that matter)
