No Activision booth at E3

..but they are still at E3

In June, we’re going to be at E3 showcasing gameplay from Infinity Ward’s ambitious new game. We’re looking forward to sharing exciting new details about the next great Call of Duty game in partnership with our friends at PlayStation. We’re proud to be participating in this premier video game event, but won’t have an Activision booth on the show floor.

Source (Activision)

No booth from EA, no booth from Activision. I'm beginning to see why The ESA is calling them "participating companies" instead of exhibitors this year.

I wonder if any more companies are taking this route.

When did they last have a booth?

Like every year. This is from last year i think

No EA and No Activision that is lots of empty space.

Makes sense they probably have most of their games at sony and Blizzard usually is bigger at gamescom

This in conjunction with EA not having a booth is the telling part. Major pubs pulling away from E3. Is it that the cost is too high or that they can get better marketing/exposure elsewhere including online directly to consumers? Both..?

if this is the price to finally see the Bandicoot come back, i'm fine

This is all weird and worrying. Does it mark the downturn of E3?

EA's booth used to be my favourite, so I'm sad they won't be there. If I had free time, I would play NHL.

Frankly they don't need one, all they do is Skylanders, CoD (which will get shown off at Sony) and Destiny (probly the same) anyway.

What else?
Blizzard is it's own thing
King stuff would never get shown at E3
MLG? Could get a mention in conjunction with CoD
Licensed stuff that will get no exposure, that's kinda the point of their model
And Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk are now both dead

Seems like everyone can afford their own press event without being associated with E3. Especially in the era of the internet and Twitch press event streaming.

Good luck to them all.

Good. Less bombast and smaller, more focused publisher presence means that retailers and press can do their jobs as they should. Get back to being more of a trade show and less of a spectacle, and publishers can save that big cash outlay to have their own huge events.

More pubs should follow EA and ATVI's lead.

E3. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is the best selling game this generation, and there's no real benefit to Activision having a booth at this event.

Yeah, but that's Black Ops 3. What can Infinity Ward realistically put out this year that can even come close to competing with that?

Ghosts took a lot of rep away from them.

E3 has dipped before in the past so it'll be interesting to see if it bounces back again. Either way, E3 as we know it online will never disappear. It'll just be a pain in the ass for press to cover everything in person since they'll have to travel more.

I don't really know how to take this news, first EA, now activision

seems like E3 is declining heavily... why? I always loved that time of the year

At this point all they need keynotes from the big 3 and then just have press meetings and all that.

E3 just doesn't need to be that big anymore with a lot of publishers doing their own thing throughout the year.

I guess I'd zoom out to the broader context and determine that way:

1.) Rockstar doesn't announce games at E3.
2.) Blizzard doesn't announce games at E3.
3.) EA dropped their booth at E3 this year in favor of their own event near by.
4.) Now Activision dropped their booth.

Would you view this as a statement about E3 or a statement about the fading relevance of the above vendors?

Aren't the point of these shows to get retailers excited about future products? Is Activision really to the point of just saying "you know what CoD is, you know what Skylanders is, goodnight"?

A lot of these companies nowadays prefer having their own events as they tend to get more attention. So I am not surprised some of the bigger companies are slowly moving away from E3.

You can still do this without 80-foot screens and 150dB sound. You meet with retailers, show them the goods on small screens or short presentations, answer questions. No need for wasteful spending on over-the-top presence... especially since the people most interested aren't at E3 but are instead following from home.

Not disagreeing with you with your assertion, given the age of streaming and all but:

The first 2 have never cared for E3,

ATVI has such a sparse lineup that don't need to be catered to for the enthusiasts at a space like E3.

EA I admit is more of a surprise though, buth FWIW they almost always have the worst conference too given the prevalence of sports so similar pov for ATVI could apply here too.

Now if T2 or Ubi chucked E3 then I'd be worried =/

E3 is dead.

Is this more reflective of E3's declining relevance... or Call of Duty's?

I made a thread asking about E3 declining relevance, and was creamed.

I wasnt even saying it was going to die, just how long till publisher stop dropping serious dough into have their event there.

When everything becomes iterative, the need for huge booths becomes less and less.

It's the fanboy inside me who believes every year into an announcement, but when Zelnick says so, it will happen, THIS TIME :D
I'd propose that if 2K was there to show off BioShock 3 and another new game on top of their already announced line-up, Zelnick would consider that very big.

I guess my feeling is that publishers see it as just another streaming event opportunity in a sea of streaming opportunities instead of the end all be all of announcing their games.

EA broke out of the event in favor of having an event their fans could actually attend at the same time, and also covering the UK at the same time, which doesn't have much in the way of events as it stands.

I think that's a large part of it, a significant chunk (if not majority if you only look at Activision Publishing and not Blizzard, King etc.) of ATVI's business comes from 2 products that get released every year.

From this, I can only conclude that the NX is actually a Watson-based sueprcomputer that is eating up all the floorspace and everyone is fleeing from it's gray goo-like properties.

Makes sense. Why put additional costs on the company if they can piggyback on Sony etc.

I mean it isn't a great sign for E3 but then again it wasn't long ago companies were bitching E3 was too pricey and they tried to change E3 and it was a disaster.

Short of new IP etc. it does make sense to just ride on the back of the console makers who are willing to pay to push your game
