No Activision booth at E3

I dont know how the booths at E3 are looking, but could it possible that CoD 2016 will be playable at Sonys booth ? At gamescom there are often publishers who are presenting their games by the booths of big publishers.

Frankly they don't need one, all they do is Skylanders, CoD (which will get shown off at Sony) and Destiny (probly the same) anyway.

What else?
Blizzard is it's own thing
King stuff would never get shown at E3
MLG? Could get a mention in conjunction with CoD
Licensed stuff that will get no exposure, that's kinda the point of their model
And Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk are now both dead
Yeah, this is a fair point. Last year their non-CoD/Spyro/Destiny stuff flopped, unsurprising that they have less of it this year. With Destiny & CoD both likely having prominent Sony floor space, they really don't need anything of their own to show off.

Still, the fact that they are comfortable giving up that space may say something about how they see the future of the show. Remember that in years past, companies would show up exclusively to preserve floor space - rather than drop to the bottom of the priority list. Now? Not as concerned about that.

Not disagreeing with you with your assertion, given the age of streaming and all but:

The first 2 have never cared for E3,

ATVI has such a sparse lineup that don't need to be catered to for the enthusiasts at a space like E3.

EA I admit is more of a surprise though, buth FWIW they almost always have the worst conference too given the prevalence of sports so similar pov for ATVI could apply here too.

Now if T2 or Ubi chucked E3 then I'd be worried =/

they have destiny, cod, tmnt, overwatch, skylanders plus any updates to wow, diablo or starcraft so not sure about the sparse lineup comment unless you are not including blizzard

I made a thread asking about E3 declining relevance, and was creamed.

I wasnt even saying it was going to die, just how long till publisher stop dropping serious dough into have their event there.

Completely missed that thread but I would have posted in it and agreed with its decline. There was another E3 thread though that I did post in, that the game industry has so many avenues that E3 isn't required by some of them and that there's no need to make it this big Christmas-like event. Other industries now many conventions they can go to or even have their own special events or announce things in a video through social media.

That's how I see games going too. E3's relevancy is in decline because the future has more opportunities than ever before and the companies can announce things on their own schedule. Look no further than Nintendo with what they've been doing for awhile with Nintendo Direct.

COD at PS conference again?

Buckle up because that's how it's going to be for every E3 until the next-gen at least. Sony has the marketing deal for COD now, not Microsoft.

More room for VR demos.
:rimshot

E3 needs to move somewhere cheaper. I hear Atlanta is lovely in the summer.

Even with lower booth costs, there's still high overhead in building, staffing, and maintaining a huge booth for 3-4 days. Plus planning. And setup. And materials. I'd rather go balls out on that stuff for my own event, charge admission, and hog the spotlight for my company. Use E3 for its intended purpose: A trade show for retailers and some press. Schedule small meetings. Devote attention in more meaningful chunks.

Hopefully that's where E3 is headed. It would be a much more productive event.

So how long before they have public days?

Given this potential trend, hopefully not ever. Keep traffic to relevant parties; the public can attend PAX, PSX, and other fan events. Having the public there interferes with business that should be taking place.

I really really really hope this means they aren't just pushing all their stuff into Sony's conference. I don't think I can sit through another Destiny showcase again.

When everything becomes iterative, the need for huge booths becomes less and less.

That's how I read their not having a booth. It's entirely possible that, if they have more major products next year, they have a larger presence next year. It's too early for me to make a "decline" judgment.

From this, I can only conclude that the NX is actually a Watson-based sueprcomputer that is eating up all the floorspace and everyone is fleeing from it's gray goo-like properties.

Now THAT would make for a fun E3. Watch as it takes over the city!

I guess I'd zoom out to the broader context and determine that way:

1.) Rockstar doesn't announce games at E3.
2.) Blizzard doesn't announce games at E3.
3.) EA dropped their booth at E3 this year in favor of their own event near by.
4.) Now Activision dropped their booth.

Would you view this as a statement about E3 or a statement about the fading relevance of the above vendors?

Well first off, there's announcing games at E3... and then there's showing them. All those companies you've mentioned have announced games at E3 a bunch of times, usually at platform holder conferences. And certainly show them on the floor too.

I wonder if maybe Activision is just going to have Sony showcase COD at their booth instead of using the massive outlandish booth they usually go for.

I'm not including Blizzard, they act autonomously and have their own event and pretty much never attend E3.

Also there's no point in really mentioning TMNT, it's a tiny blip on ATVI's lineup that is in their best interest not to market at E3 to keep costs down, that's how their licensed model works.

Leaving just CoD, Destiny and Skylanders which I mentioned.

Oh well, we'll probably get a trailer around that time anyway.

Oh yeah, it's E3 time regardless, I'm sure a vid will pop up.

E3 might be gone in like 2 years

It's not going anywhere. It's just changing. But with events like PSX, Nintendo doing it's own thing, etc. We're at a point where we don't need to save everything for E3. Publishers can announce things throughout the year.

Soooo... everyone is basically going to be doing their own versions of Nintendo directs then. Looks what you have done Nintendo. Look what you have done.

Now Nintendo will try to surprise everyone by showing up with a huge stage show and booth and the place will be a ghost town.

No booth from EA, no booth from Activision. I'm beginning to see why The ESA is calling them "participating companies" instead of exhibitors this year.

I wonder if any more companies are taking this route.
I've been going to E3 since 1998 so I've seen it ebb and flow for a while. The simple fact is: E3 is unnessasary in today's world.

- Game Journalists and Games Media in general aren't that influential to game players anymore. YouTube and Twitch personalities drive game awareness and adoption today more than anything else.

- Video streaming and Internet adoption allow developers and publishers to stream their marketing and awareness messages directly to their audiences. They don't need to brief people for magazine articles anymore.

- As digital distribution takes over the need for selling physical distributors on giving your product shelf space is going away.

- Crushing all the major announcements in the gaming industry into four days simply makes it easier for smaller voices to get lost.

Honestly, E3 was magic for me. It was a huge moment in my career to start going and it was absolutely unlike anything else standing in those halls with millions and millions of dollars spent solely to try and impress those of us there. I'm honestly sad that future generations won't get to experience it but I can't actually see viable reasons for the show to last much longer.

:(

As long as the press conferences stay, I don't care at all what happens on the show floor.

Not that Activision had a press conference but just in general.

Their attendance has been steadily increasing YOY for a while now. It still has a purpose as a bombastic showcase.

It'll be a public show before it goes.

What would the publishers get out of this? They spend a metric fuckton of cash for the ESA and Los Angeles to make bank on increasing attendance-- when E3 is, at its heart, a trade show. Publishers that have the capital are better served to break away and host their own events; they can make money by selling tickets and get the same kind of message across that having an ESA-sponsored booth does, without sharing the spotlight with everyone else.

It won't matter that attendance goes up if publishers (like EA and ATVI have) don't spend money on booth space. They won't get publisher appointments and there won't be an awful lot to see... and the ESA can't force publishers to maintain booths.

I agree with this. ^^

I think the lines between trade and consumer are more blurred than ever.

Hmm, it makes you wonder if something has gone down behind the scenes... First EA then Acti... Well as long as I get my press conferences I'll be happy!

Mostly likely that EA has a lot to show, so they're doing their own thing, and Activison doesn't have anything that would warrant paying a huge ammount for floor space. Activision will probably be in the Playstation and maybe Nintendo booths, I'm guessing.

It seems like yesterday when every publisher under the Sun had their own press conference in E3. Now the 2 major ones won't even have booths (Though EA will have its own conference still)

Not really Surprised. Besides TKK, Skylanders and Guitar Hero, they didn't have much. Blops 3 was just a viewing event.

This is incorrect. They actually brought CoD multiplayer to E3 for the first time last year.

But, Sony had a pretty big Destiny gameplay area set up in their booth last year (I think they might have had more demo stations than Activision did for the game) so this is probably what they will do again. It does make a lot of sense to let Sony do the demoing for you, especially when they have big exclusive deals with them on their 2 big games anyway.

The E3 isn't about to die again, is it?
For good this time hopefully.

It's run its course. It's become less of a necessity and loss investment for many companies. Especially the big guys who can throw their own party all about them.

I doubt it means anything in particular other than E3 being a slowly dwindling show.

Still looking forward to what Sony has in store. Hopefully a Crash announcement with all of the teases and Sony being best buddies with Acti.

Probably have all their games at sonys booth to save money and space

Sony and Activision have been very cozy this gen..I know you are joking, but I wouldn't be absolutely shocked if there were Activision games with Sony deals playable at Sony's booth...
