Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis - 15th Anniversary Surprise

Just.......how, HOW do you mess up Sonic 1? I'm jumping right into bashing this, as there really is no defense for this horrid version of an iconic classic. I loved playing through Sonic 1 for the retrospective and it holds true as a honored gaming classic.

So, how could Sonic Team make such an horrid port that only insults the series legacy in such a insidious way :(.

Lets jump into the blast that is Sonic Genesis on the Game Boy Advance.

- - - - - - - -

This game is a port of Sonic 1 running on the engine of Sonic Advance. Sonic Advance is a great looking and running game, so it should run Sonic 1 with no problem, right? Well.....Sonic 1 had its core gameplay engine in the original version but Advance had two engines; a core gameplay one and a graphics one. However, Sonic 1 only runs on Advance's gameplay engine, leading to that portion of the engine to do EVERYTHING. This leads to the game struggling to run on the Game Boy Advance and despite running off Genesis coding, its still using the Advance gameplay engine for everything.

So, one must ask, they could of just had a rom of the game and used a Genesis Emulator. Or just ported the game to the Nintendo DS with the other Classic games or something. But they didn't, leading to this.....'mess' of a game happening.

How this game came about was....I suppose an 'effort' quote on quote to celebrate the anniversary. Sure, spread your team thin Sonic Team when 06 was struggling to come along, Naka leaving Sonic Team still lingering in the studio and Sonic Team USA being scrapped after Shadow the Hedgehog launched.......great idea.

- - - - - - - - - - -

I'm going to lump the presentation, gameplay, music and level design into one section as they can all be summed up like this; butchered. The game's level backgrounds flicker frequently, the frame rate is very erratic, the momentum physics are broken leading to the game being needlessly annoying or downright soul crushing, the music and sound effects sound nothing like the original Genesis game..........

Everything is wrong here and its like Sonic 1 was put through a grinder, with every good element cut up into tinny pieces and sprinkled into the stupid grey cart that Sonic Genesis is.

Sorry I'm so bitter but nothing compares to Labyrinth Zone in Sonic Genesis. The game is slow as it is but how does it fare underwater?

SONIC MOVES WORSE THEN HE DOES IN SONIC BLAST!!!!!

And......it makes Labyrinth Zone worse then Blue Marine Zone in that same game. Just.......how do you do that X(!

.......If I can say one thing good about the game, is that the game is Sonic 1. That would be saying something, but with the game released on the PSP that same year with Sonic 2 joining it, with the game running great on the PSP hardware......that little bit of praise means nothing.

Lets have a good laugh with the music, as we all love to hear our favorite Sonic 1 tracks sound worse :). Right :D?!

Spring Yard Zone - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwlaS6lJ_qw&index=17&list=PL51750F0DEE78D848
Green Hill Zone - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICHz0wnPqPg&list=PL51750F0DEE78D848&index=10
Starlight Zone - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEiW6aJOv2Y&index=18&list=PL51750F0DEE78D848
Scrap Brain Zone - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ytqCNfl-aA&list=PL51750F0DEE78D848&index=15
Marble Zone - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfCRQcI8BMM&list=PL51750F0DEE78D848&index=14

Just......come on :(. The GBA sound chip made great tracks across the Advance series. Hell, Sonic Team made the GBA sing with Pinball Party's OST X(. How could they mess up bring over Sonic 1's tracks over to the GBA.......

I wanted to cover this game for the retrospective because of one thing; this is embodiment of Sonic Team being lost during 2005-2008. They didn't know how to manage the team, they didn't know how to develop games, and they were forced by SEGA to keep pumping out Sonic game after Sonic game with little regard to quality.

Say what you will about Adventure, Adventure 2 and Heroes, but they felt like polished, complete games to me. They had weak points but they were fun experiences. Their co-developed games with Dimps turned out great. And they even managed to make a great new IP for the GameCube with Billy Hatcher.

But then Shadow hit in 2005 and this came out not long after. The Dark Age of Sonic had bright spots, like Sonic Riders and......Sonic Rush.

That is the game coming up next and after seeing two threads covering horrid Sonic titles, we need to return to covering quality XD!

Lets boost our way through with Sonic Speed.

Kinda glad this never got released in Europe. I absolutely would have bought it if it did so in hindsight I'm glad it didn't. Although I've always been very curious about trying it to see how bad it really is.

I feel the same for you. Also, I'm very pleased this never came out in Japan.

Sonic 06
Sonic Riders
Sonic Rivals
Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis.

Best. Birthday. Ever.

Riders was a great game and Rivals is....'meh' honestly.

But 06 and Genesis....its like getting punched in the face repeatedly before you even eat your cake :(.

I'm glad my Gameboy Advance was stolen so I never got to buy this.

Around the time this came out (I think) my DS was stole with a 100% Mario 64 file and Kirby's Amazing Mirror cart inside it :l. Not fun :(.

But at least you never had the misfortune to play this 'port' of a game.

I remember wanting this so bad as huge Sonic 1 fanboy, but then I read the reviews.

Luckily we have 2 superlative ports/remakes? of Sonic 1 for portables--M2 3D Classic and the Taxman port.

And the ironic part to Genesis.....is that a PSP collection called Sega Genesis Collection released, and it had solid emulated versions of Sonic 1 & 2....the same year this mess released :l.

.

Yes, Sonic games have very high print runs, of course they are common.

There was a reason I covered this before moving onward to Sonic Rush; this game is the embodiment of Sonic Team turning into a rush-job studio for a few years (2005-2008).

Edit: Ah, I see the joke you made ;). Will edit the statement now. Thank you for the correction :).

I remember being super excited that I could have both Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario World on my GBA when I first saw print ads for this.

A shame it didn't pan out.

This was never released in Europe and with good reason, we already suffered enough with the PAL version of Sonic 1 on the Mega Drive.

Sonic 06
Sonic Riders
Sonic Rivals
Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis.

Best. Birthday. Ever.

Riders was pretty good and beside not like Sonic 10th birthday celebration was any better.

Adventure 2 is nowhere near the level of 06 and Sonic Genesis though, even with its flaws.

But I agree with you on Riders, a really fun racing game that once it 'clicked', it really was a blast :).

Also that Sega managed to give better care to porting Phantasy Star III to the GBA.

A game nobody likes
but me :(

Has anyone here ever own this thing?

The Sega Nomad was essentially a portable Genesis. Oddly enough, this bulky thing was the far superior way to play the original Sonic on the go than whatever the hell we got on the GBA.

Of course nowadays all you need is a 3DS and the 3D Classics version of Sonic 1.

man this was a dark time for Sonic

You could make a case for Secret Rings being the best Sonic game of the era described as the darkest.

I still think the Saturn era is worse, at least they tried and failed during these four or so years to make mainline Sonic games while the Saturn didn't have a single one, just ports and spinoffs.

I would argue this was a good thing; they tried unique ideas with different developers (Travelers Tails, AM2) and while we never got a mainline game on Saturn, at least the series didn't get worse over time.

Quality stuff still was releasing (Sonic the Fighters was a lot of fun, Sonic R was so-bad-its-amazing, Sonic Jam is a great compilation, Sonic 3D Blast was a lot better then it had the right to be, the Game Gear Sonic's were more or less consistently enjoyable releases) so while we never got a mainline Saturn game, it might of been for the best.

I enjoy Secret Rings a good deal but man is the Modern Era so mixed.

We got amazing games (Colors, Generations, All Stars Racing, Racing Transformed, Rush Series), good games (Unleashed, All Stars Tennis, Sonic 4 Ep. II), okay games (Black Knight, Rivals 1 & 2), and really bad ones (Boom Wii U, Sonic 06).

So, rather we got a small selection of good/okay games instead of repeatedly mixed titles. Handheld Sonic is always consistent for every era, with the Modern Era somewhat lacking when it shifted to the 3DS.

Riders is the best game on the list... which really isn't saying much.

His 10th Anniversary at least had Advance to fall back on.
Has anyone else out there have such a horrid 15th Birthday celebration?

Has there been a shittier 15th birthday since this?

Mega Man X7 released on Mega Man's 15th. It also had quality titles such as Battle Chip Challenge, Network Transmission and Battle Network 4.

Battle Network 3 and Zero 2 also released then, but those are solid.

A friend had it. It took 6 AA batteries that lasted about 2 hours total. He had the rechargeable battery pack and it didn't last more than 45 minutes with that.

Just felt the need to say...
Holy shit the music o_o

Green Hill Zone, right away you know something was off...
But Spring Yard Zone, omg, this is a travesty.

Had one.
But battery life wasn't good. So I left it plugged in and in the TV too. XD

Sonic Team is shit the last 10 years in case you haven't noticed.

So, I guess Unleashed, Colors, and Generations never happened in your world.....quite sad buddy :(. Those are great games and they put Sonic Team back into 'quality developer' spot again.

Take a look at my Unleashed and Colors threads if you have the time.

Sonic 06
Sonic Riders
Sonic Rivals
Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis.

Best. Birthday. Ever.

And this year we are getting only another unpromising Sonic Boom game. And nothing else by now. Generations was announced 8 months before release, and we still have nothing.

Second best birthday ever.

Games can have a late announcement and still come out in the same year.

Did we forget how Fallout 4 was announced at E3 2016 and released in November :)?

The anniversary game could be announced in June/July and still release in November :D!

You're right on that point. I'm a little upset because I expected the announcement of a new game at the GDC event, and we got just and announcement of an anniversary party. Right now I have my doubts about the existence of a new great game. Sorry for being so pessimistic.
