A new era for the Forza Motorsport series begins on May 5 with the release of the open beta for Forza Motorsport 6: Apex. Crafted specifically for Windows 10, Apex represents the critical first step in the future of the Forza franchise as it expands onto Windows 10 PCs. Apex combines the power and performance of DirectX 12 with Turn 10’s racing expertise, our proprietary ForzaTech™ engine, and Forza’s legacy of stellar content. Most importantly, Forza Motorsport 6: Apex is our way to introduce Forza’s award-winning gameplay to a new audience on Windows 10 and invite a new group of gamers to develop a passion for cars and racing.

During the open beta for Forza Motorsport 6: Apex, players can expect to play a beautiful, high quality experience that will run on a variety of Windows 10-enabled machines. As a first-party Microsoft studio, Turn 10 is obsessed with performance in Forza games and, during the open beta for Apex, we will be working to improve the game’s performance across a diverse selection of hardware setups (see below for our recommended PC specs).

As development continues, players can expect to see updates and improvements to the game.

For example, wheel support is coming to Forza Motorsport 6: Apex and Turn 10 is busy working to ensure that Apex delivers the kind of wheel support, performance, and features that racing fans expect from a range of available hardware. In addition we plan to support additional features that we know are important to PC gamers, such as the ability to disable Vsync and an in-app framerate counter.

Forza Motorsport 6: Apex utilizes the cloud-based Drivatars of your Xbox Live Friends and the Xbox One community, as well as asynchronous leaderboards for comparing your Race Points, but the game will not feature online multiplayer or the livery design editor. However, in an early beta update, we will be adding a selection of curated livery designs from the Forza painting community to the car select flow.

Known issues (as of May 5th, 2016):

Some graphics cards may be blocked by driver version
Some cards may not have supported drivers released that meet the game's minimum driver version. If you have the latest driver version available from your graphics card manufacturer but are still blocked from launching the game with an "AP301" error, you can attempt to bypass this block by holding "Page Up" while selecting the Quit button. Be advised that bypassing this pop-up may result in game instability and / or poor performance.

Crashes can occur when maximizing settings on low end machines
Players can manually customize visual settings above the capacity of their available hardware in some scenarios. This can cause poor performance and instability when settings exceed the available video and system memory.

Crashes can occur after repeated races on low memory machines
Some machines at the minimum memory specification (2 GB of video memory + 8 GB of system memory) may encounter a crash loading into events. This most often occurs after 5 to 7 consecutive races.

Cars unlocked on car select don't refresh.
When unlocking a car from the car select screen, either via Forza HUB unlock or paid early unlock, the player must leave and re-enter the car select screen to see the car properly unlock.

Multi-GPU scenarios are not supported
The title does not support multi-GPU scenarios, such as multiple physical graphics cards or cards with multiple integrated GPUs. In these scenarios only one of the available GPUs will be leveraged by the title.

Low Memory warnings can occur with default settings
In some hardware scenarios near / at minimum requirements, players may experience low memory warnings with default settings.

V-Sync cannot be disabled
There is currently no option to disable V-sync, which would allow tearing and smoother framerates on some systems. This feature is targeted for an update soon after launch.

Hybrid GPU laptops may experience tearing
Laptops equipped with both an integrated GPU and a dedicated GPU may experience significant screen tearing / corruption when playing the game in full screen.

Unable to disable anisotropic filtering
The Anisotropic filtering option currently has no "off" setting.

Unable to manually disable MSAA
The MSAA custom setting currently has a lower limit of 2x, with no option to disable anti-aliasing. Anti-aliasing is disabled by default as part of the "Low" dynamic quality setting.

Dynamic render quality may be set incorrectly
Some machines may be placed in a dynamic render quality setting that isn't optimal for their system capabilities. These settings will be profiled and optimized throughout the beta period.

Fury X + 16 GB machines unable to select "Ultra"
Machines equipped with an AMD Fury X that also have 16 GB of system memory will be unable to select "Ultra" dynamic render quality with 4K resolution. To work around this issue: 1) Ensure the system display resolution is set to 4K (3840 x 2160 - requires 4k monitor / display adapter) 2) Launch the game and go to fullscreen model (Alt-Enter) 3) Go to Options->Video 4) Set "Dynamic Render Quality" to "Ultra" 5) Set "Force Resolution" to "Off"

Some performance dips may occur
In some race / track scenarios players may encounter momentary dips in performance below our target framerate goals for default settings. Game optimization will be ongoing throughout the beta period.

All in-app purchases will be charged to the user signed into the Windows Store.
If the user signed into the windows store is not the same as the user signed into the Xbox App/Apex, the user's in-game purchases will be charged to the user signed into the MS store.

Racing wheels are not supported
Race wheels are not currently supported in Forza Motorsport 6: Apex. Adding wheel support will be a focus of the development team during the beta period.

Some controllers may not function as intended
Some third party game controllers may not have full functionality in Forza Motorsport 6: Apex. Recommended controllers include the Xbox One Controller and Xbox 360 Controller.

Multi-monitor scenarios are not supported
Forza Motorsport 6: Apex currently only supports full screen in single screen scenarios at 16:9 and 16:10 aspect ratios.

Car Bowling pins don't count after rewind.
In the Raptor Bowling event, any pins knocked over and subsequently reset by use of rewind will no longer count towards a player's bowling score if knocked over again.

Drivatar Badges flicker during race
During some tracks / races, Drivatar names and badges will flicker in and out of view.

Intro video audio is out of sync
The audio that introduces the Ford GT on Rio is out of sync with the video it accompanies by up to a few seconds.

Some badges may appear locked after unlocking
After unlocking during post-race, some badges may appear locked when the user returns to the Badges Menu.

Plane disappears on Rio
At times the plane on the Rio track will disappear for a short period of time.

Saved photos cannot be shared
There is currently no way to share a photo once it has been saved. Photos can only be shared by selecting "Save and share" when they are first captured.

Restarting races can cause the track to disappear
When restarting races in some select locations, the track can fail to stream / load. Exiting and re-launching the race should resolve the issue.

Closed Spotlight events still retain "New" tag
When Spotlight events close that the player has never played, they retain the "New" tag and are counted in the available medals total for the Spotlight Series.

I'll be all over it because free, but it's so weird that wheel support is an "additional feature", especially for a PC game.

Not too shabby. Glad to hear about the wheel support. Any news if this will get a physical release? I know it's going to be free so I'm not counting on one.

Nice system requirements details. This is *the* former Xbox exclusive I've been looking forward to coming to PC. I just hope this isn't another UWP disaster :(

I see that X1 Exclusives on PC need insane amount of RAM for some reason. I mean Recommended is 12GB of RAM and 4GB of VRAM that is just insane in my opinion.

I hope this gives us a clue as to whether or not Horizon 3 will be alright on PC or if we'll have another QB situation.

Those are very reasonable specs requirements but considering how shitty UWP games have been performance wise, I don't trust it.

Really like to hear more info about the wheel support - in particular if theyll support standard PC wheels that werent specifically made to support the XO

It would be infuriating if they didn't. Even as a G920 owner, there will be well-deserved backlash if basically anything after the Driving Force GT isn't covered.

I assume since the Windows update that fixes gSync for UWP apps is not out yet, everyone with gSync will not be able to run this in full screen?

Recommended PC requirements seem to get stupider with each game. What exactly is it about Forza 6 that needs 12GB?

Maybe they set the requirements high so that people don't bitch if they are lower and don't play it perfectly.

They are already setting expecations low on available features, and the requirements seem off the charts.

Free is free, though. Let's see how this port goes. Happy to support Forza on PC at jo cost regardless.

When compared to what specs it runs on Xbox one is say these are pretty high personally.

It's not like Apex only has higher resolution and framerate than the Xbox One version, don't forget about extra graphical effects, better textures, probably higher geometry etc. So don't compare it directly to the Xbox One version.

I love that they include the 4k recommendations.

The low-end isn't bad...comparable to the X1.

Lol at the sys requirements. 1080p60 needs 4 GB of VRAM? Gtfo of here.

The X1 build is locked 1080p/60 and utilizes that amount of Ram (or more?)....makes sense to me.

I'm guessing "minimum" requirements gets you 30fps.

Please don't let this turn into one of those PC threads where I'm embarrassed by the "PC gamers". This game should have settings that should go well beyond anything the X1 could dream of.

XB1 runs the game at 1080 60fps like recommended says... so higher res/framerate wouldn't play a part in the bump in specs.

It depends what minimum means.. is that xbox one graphics at 1080/60fps or is it lower res/framerate?

12GB of Ram for 1080p.... oh boy, time to buy 32GB of ram if you like running anything else other than the game in your PC, like... windows...

Exactly. So there is no reason for it to even be a UWP.

What does this even mean? It could be a full featured $60 AAA release, a $10 indie game, or a glorified demo, it is still going to be UWP if it is coming from Microsoft. UWP sucks, but why would anyone expect that they would not release Forza as a UWP? Just to setup some fake disappointment when it ships that way?

That's unified RAM, not split ram..... you need 12 GB system RAM AND 4 GB VRAM just for 1080p60. Twice as much the total as in Xbone.

These aren't ports made specifically for PC. It's easy enough to tell.

The GPUs that are 4 GB are several times more powerful than a Xbone GPU. To get the *same* performance on those GPUs as on Xbone, even with added AA/AF, is so small a jump for so much more powerful hardware.

I hope this gives us a clue as to whether or not Horizon 3 will be alright on PC or if we'll have another QB situation.

I could be wrong here, but I doubt a lot of the graphics engine stuff is shared between Horizon and vanilla Forza. I assume an open-world 30fps racer has very different requirements than a closed-track 60fps traditional racer.

At best a good showing of this game will demonstrate a similar commitment to Horizon 3.

The fact they are launching a beta first is a great sign.

Ignoring the fact that's not how PC game requirements work, what version of Windows are you running that requires 16GB of RAM?

Those recommended specs are insane, 12gb RAM AND 4gb VRAM? Even the Witcher 3 didn't need that much in 4K, nor does Project Cars

We'll see. Hopefully this is a KI type game and not a QB like game (in performance/effort)

They maybe have different, bigger textures for 4K so you need the stream throughput.

Come on

If you've got a 4K rig you should have gotten an SSD before all of that shit

I was being a smart ass. Meaning, the PS4K better have an upped SATA controller, or it would be a shitty oversight.

Was not being a smartass about the Wheel however, lol.

Oh I know all this. Its just funny because when we were first having these discussions the mantra was that these games HAD to be UWP because they were ports of Xbox titles and it's the easiest way for them to do it.

I don't play racing sims, but I am curious to see how this plays out.

How is wheel support typically handled in racing sims? What kind of support will be adequate for racing sims players to be satisfied? Are there a variety of standards or types of hardware?

Holy fuck it's not like these specs are necessarily needed to run the game fine. I doubt you need 12GB RAM and we'll see if 4GB VRAM is needed as well. Relax?
