Remember:

DO NOT just post the title of the movie you wratched. It isn't conducive at all to the kind of discussion & communication we want to engender here, because it tells us nothing of you, the movie, the impact of the latter on the former. Post scores, descriptions, essays, poems, gifs, hashtags, whatever provides you the best outlet for personal expression, you unique little digital snowflake. Also, Marvel movies are mostly shit. - icarus-daedelus

So last month I watched 29 movies. My pacing is a bit off for one a day but I was over in the previous months so I'm still good. Not really trying to hit 365 movies per se but more trying to see how many I can watch with 365 being the target. April was a very strong month though.

So for my top 5 number one has to be Gone Girl. Sorry Revenant you were damn good but not that good.

2. Revenant
3. Spotlight
4. Annie Hall
5. Carol

But wait...there's more! Because the month was so strong, I have bonus lists!

Top action movies
Hard Boiled, Mad Max, Death Wish, Moonwalkers

Top dramas
Begin Again, Rashomon, Scandal, Life Stinks

Kung Fu movies from best to worst, though even the worst was pretty cool
Five Elements Ninjas, Five Venoms, Heads for Sale, Web of Death, The Shaolin Temple

Louder Than Bombs - Joachim Trier

Jesus, this Trier guy eh? At times bleak and always introspective. Probably wasn't the best thing to watch while I was feeling down. Some interesting experimental 'daydream' sequences and a narrative that lurches forward and back. I did love it, along with Oslo, 31 August, which I had watched the other night. He brings a high quality to the films that he makes. One quibble was the use of Love On A Real Train, which was also used in The Squid And The Whale. That too had Jesse Eisenberg and with a younger brother in a similar type of scene. Felt a little tacky. Otherwise yeah, great stuff.

Moonrise Kingdom: needless to say it was awesome. I still prefer Fantastic Mr. Fox though.

10 Cloverfield Lane: it just came out here. I'm very conflicted about this movie, up until the end it was incredible, Goodman is the man. But the ending was... eh.

Netflix has been pretty disappointing of late. Seems like their original content is the sole focus. That's fine but I want movies and what they have has been pretty lackluster of late. So I thought I'd check out Fandor finally. This is looking right up my alley. Some Fulci and Bava I can't seem to find and a bunch of others. So I'm riding out this last month of Netflix streaming and picking up Fandor instead. Pretty excited...now to fire up a movie!

May looks like a great month for movies, I'm so psyched. Green Room, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, A Hologram For The King, Alice Through The Looking Glass, Everybody Wants Some, Money Monster, The Angry Birds Movie, all sorts.

I was a little disappointed this week, seeing Mark Kermode review a couple of films which didn't seem to be released in Ireland at all, God's Not Dead 2 and that thing about the heroin addict.

La Jetee. This was a strange short film. It was a tale of time travel told through still images. I'm guessing this was Twelve Monkeys inspiration.

Kiss Kiss Fingerbang. Another short about a dude that finds out his girlfriend will do anything when she gets fingerbanged. So he takes advantage of it.

Lisa and the Devil. Have wanted to watch this since last Halloween. A very strange movie with Telly Savalas. Elke Sommer has nice tits. One thing that was interesting was the use of reflections in cigarette cases, mirrors, and whatever else. The story was out there but not a bad way to start the month.

Edit: The House at the Edge of the Galaxy. Fandor is the shit for short films. This one is about a kid seeking the stars but learning a valuable lesson in the process. Pretty cool quick little thing.

Damn lot of you had amazing Aprils for movie watching

best watches:
1) Everybody Wants Some!!
2) Tangerine
3) Red Road
4) Hannah Takes the Stairs
5) Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
6) Keanu
Watched a preview of Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping the other day.

It was fantastic. Great Lonely Island Songs patched together by a hilarious story that mirrors the success of Justin Timberlake.

Definitely a must see when it actually hits wide release.

Is it comparable to Hot Rod and MacGruber? The Lonely Island guys have kinda killed it in features, only The Watch was a dud

Yup, Twelve Monkeys is based on the short. Twelve Monkeys is good and all but I prefer La Jetee

not only a great month but a productive one, as well, with 27 films which is a personal record for me. i was busy the last few days, otherwise i would have completed the 30.

I watched The Way Way Back !

I hope there's never a point where I don't wanna see Sam Rockwell in a movie. He elevates every movie he's in.

I mean this movie is really good anyway, it has great acting, it looks great, good music, small but contained storyline, the teenage actors didn't make me want to rip my eyeballs out with pliers, etc.

But damn, Sam Rockwell. What a fucking awesome dude. Thats who I wanna be when I grow up.

My friend and I decided to do a double feature day today, and drove the 30 minutes to an out of town movie theatre to see movies that weren't playing closer. There's a new app that gave us our first purchase free, so we saw one of the two movies for zero dollars, which was great.

1) Green Room - It took a little while to truly get going, but it had good character development from the start. I liked the opening, where we found the characters.

The movie was quite good. Very brutal.

One part had me questioning things, though.
They only grabbed the shotgun from behind the bar, but could have also taken the enemy's shotgun.

2) Everybody Wants Some - Really good. I love Dazed and Confused, and this was a great spiritual successor. A lot of fun.

Top 20 first time watches of April:

1. Down by Law (1986)
2. Get on the Bus (1996)
3. Taxi Driver (1976)
4. Werckmeister Harmonies (2000)
5. Sword of Doom (1966)
6. A Separation (2011)
7. Broadway Danny Rose (1984)
---
8. Heat (1995)
9. Rio Bravo (1959)
10. Love and Death (1975)
11. Begin Again (2013)
12. Dune (1984)
13. Girl Shy (1924)
14. Mon Oncle (1958)
15. Lifeboat (1944)
16. Bananas (1971)
--
17. A Day at the Races (1937)
18. Battling Butler (1926)
19. Speedy (1928)
20. The Good Fairy (1935)

Yes, this is the first time I've seen all of these. I only started watching a lot in the last year. Great month! Top 6 could probably go in any order.

Down by Law, Werckmeister Harmonies, and Sword of Doom stand out for the stunning black and white photography. There's definitely a different viewing mode... the clarity, contrast, and detail might even be paradoxically closer to how we view the world. Meaning that many films probably throw more at you than you can reasonably perceive on a screen, while a masterfully photographed black and white image can have you comfortably focusing on things like you could in real life. Down by Law was a revelation to me, and Werckmeister Harmonies showed there is even more you can do. Long live black and white.

Pleasantville: I came in expecting an anti-nostalgia film, but rather I got a deconstruction of '50s/early '60s sitcom tropes in a world not that dissimilar from Leave it to Beaver. It does however get the point across that the '50s weren't a utopia, but also that you have to be willing to accept new and different things in your life and society, even if they're, well, unpleasant. I do like how the universe is set up. The town consists of two streets, and that's the entirety of existence. It's physically impossible to miss a basketball toss, and so on. Also cool to have Don Knotts as the TV repairman.

Watched 16 films in April and most of it was pretty great actually thanks to Hulu.

The top 10+1:
1. Les Diaboliques
2. Everybody Wants Some!!
3. Sorcerer
4. The Kid
5. F for Fake
6. Samurai Rebellion
7. Tokyo Drifter
8. Ugetsu
9. Vampyr
10. Watership Down
11. Carnival of Souls

The "liked pretty well but it should have been so much better":
12. Midnight Special
13. 10 Cloverfield Lane

The "it was a movie. and I watched it":
14. Von Ryan's Express

The "why did I waste 2 and a half hours":
15. Avengers: Age of Ultron
16. Batman v. Superman

The best rewatch:
All new viewings last month!

Kicked off the new month in spectacular style with a screening of Green Room.
Holy hell this is one of the most intense movies I've ever watched. I was literally gripping the seat and squirming around during this. Perfectly paced 90 minute thriller that is wonderfully structured in its build up and ratcheting of its tension, and pulls no punches whatsoever. The violence and threat of violence is absolutely horrifying. I'm already a sucker for siege movies ala Rio Bravo, Night of the Living Dead, and Assault on Precinct 13, and this one scratched that itch damn well. I thought this was substantially better than the director's previous effort Blue Ruin as well, thanks to the solid performances across the board here (I would be remiss to mention P Stewart in top form as the incredibly menacing skinhead leader--but menacing in a subtle way thankfully). This shot up to my top 3 of the year so far sitting in good company with The Witch and Everybody Wants Some!! Whew. I needed some deep breaths, a stiff drink, and a fucking shower after coming out of this one.

I actually got to see Green Room at the Alamo Drafthouse here in Houston, with a big crowd of genre junkies. I can't imagine a more optimal setting for that particular movie. Not a weak link in any of the performances, shot and edited with such assured confidence for maximum tension, with the blackest strain of humor underlining its siege movie ideas. Its one of those movies where people probably remember there being more violence than there actually is, just cuz its so goddamn tense and the build-up/outbursts of action are hard to forget.

I wish every movie had a documentary as in-depth as Imagining Zootopia. It could've gone on for much longer and I would've been enthralled. Extremely entertaining and highly informative, Imagining Zootopia is a lovely companion piece to the excellent animated film.

Blind Woman's Curse. This was a strange Yakuza movie about a blind woman seeking revenge. The main gang all had parts of a dragon tattooed on their backs so in formation it looked continuous. Pretty cool there. Sadly that wasn't really used much other than for show. The story was cool but overall it kind of misfired. A bit bloody but the fighting sucked.

The Revenant. One of the greatest films I have seen in the past 20 years. The visual storytelling along with the plot makes it an absolute masterpiece. It's also what Tom Hardy should be recognized for far beyond Mad Max.

I didn't do that great in April, so I'm not gonna even bother with a top 5.

I finally got around to seeing Age of Ultron...and it sure is...a movie. Editing was all over the place, pacing was meh, and character relationships felt bolted on. The story was alright, the action was, in my opinion, not really that good at all. But there's still something about it as a superhero movie that is still inherently fun to watch. Not the worst Mah-vel, but far from the best. James Spader was a good bad guy, well, insofar as how he was written, at least. Black Widow/Hulk thing was so forced and bad.

Ant-Man is incredibly forgettable. I'll admit I remember enjoying it somewhat, but literally ten minutes after finishing it, I can't really remember why. There's humor here and there, and Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas have good chemistry. The action is neat in concept but is shot in the most boring way imaginable. Corey Stoll's hamminess is delightful, but unfortunately, he can't elevate the nothing character he's portraying. It, more than any Marvel movie I can think of, serves merely as a commercial for Ant-Man's appearances in ensemble films. I'm not sure if Ant-Man can hold a film on his own, and this definitely doesn't prove anything of that like. Rudd's performance and some cool effects might make Ant-Man worth seeing, but otherwise, it's an unnecessary, unoriginal origin story in a Cinematic Universe already much too full of that.
