NeoGAF Votes: Top 50 Nintendo Games of All Time (2016 Edition)

Back in 2012 Famitsu asked their readers what their favourite Nintendo titles of all time were; the results of that survey wasn’t well liked by GAF. Others posters asked themselves which Nintendo titles would make the cut if Neogaf members could vote for their own favourite games. So we started our own thread to make the definitive NeoGAF Top 50 Nintendo games of all time list. That was 2012. Four years have gone by and a lot of new titles appeared. And with the NX on the horizon it might be interesting to see if opinions have changed in the last couple of years. Some posters bumped the old thread a few weeks back and mentioned that they would love a new chance to post their personal top 10. So…

Welcome everyone to the “NeoGAF Votes: Top 50 Nintendo games of all time” voting thread, the 2016 version! Post your own personal top 10 list and let’s see which titles are GAF’s favourites. You can also mention honourable mentions as well. But for now, the rules:

Voting rules

  1. Only Nintendo games count. No third party titles.
  2. List up to ten games, in order from one to ten.
  3. Follow the format below as listed below
  4. You can use the game list in post #2 to help you remember which games Nintendo published in the past. This list is NOT necessarily comprehensive. Don’t see your favorite game on there? Put it in your list, and we’ll update the games list with your nomination.
  5. Add your thoughts! Put a semicolon (;) after each game and write what you thought. It’s great to read thoughts of fellow GAF’ers on Nintendo’s games and why they should be in the GAF Top 50 Nintendo Games of all Time.
  6. Please don’t use abbreviations for titles. Write down the whole title to avert confusion
  7. Multiple votes for the same title will disqualify your entire ballot.
  8. Each user may only vote once, but you may edit your ballot as often as you like until the deadline.
  9. Want to talk about another poster’s list? Quote it. Any unquoted ballots (those outside a quote block) will overwrite your own previous vote.
  10. Voting Ends July 30th 2016 at 11:59pm, PST

Sample Ballot

Please note you don’t have to follow the format exactly, but it will make the thread easier to read and follow.

1. Game A ; Your thoughts on Game A.
2. Game B ; Your thoughts on Game B.
3. Game C ; Your thoughts on Game C.

And so on.

Scoring system

Same point system as the GAF Games of the Year thread

1. Game A ; 4 points
2. Game B ; 3 points
3. Game C ; 3 points
4. Game D ; 2 points
5. Game E ; 2 points
6. Game F ; 2 points
7. Game G ; 1 point
8. Game H ; 1 point
9. Game I ; 1 point
10. Game J ; 1 point

What Games Count?
  • Every Nintendo game released on NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Wii U, Gameboy, Virtual Boy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS.
  • This includes titles released before the 30th of June 2016.
  • Second Party titles count as well. For instance, games like Goldeneye 64 or Eternal Darkness, Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie are allowed.
  • Voting for imported titles is allowed. If you list an import game, please mention which country you are from. Otherwise I will assume you didn’t read the rules and the vote will not count.
  • Remakes and significant upgrades to games count too.
  • Compilations are not allowed. Examples: Super Mario All Stars (SNES) and the The Legend of Zelda compilation disc on Gamecube.
  • Ports that amount to “ROM dumps”, i.e., ports with no additional content or significant changes, are not allowed. Think of NES Classics Ice Climbers on GBA or Super Mario All-Stars 25th Anniversary.
  • If you’re unsure about a game, just ask!

What Games Count?
  • Every Nintendo game released on NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Gameboy, Virtual Boy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS.

No Wii U?

Here's Mine:
1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time ; My most anticipated game of all time that ACTUALLY paid off on release. Was blown away when it came out.
2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the past ; First Zelda game I was able to beat all on my own, still stands up to this day.
3. Super Metroid ; The game that made me fall in love with exploring and finding hidden secrets.
4. Super Mario 64 ; Nothing will describe the feeling seeing this game in motion for the first time.
5. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds ; Surprisingly refreshing and I adore the aesthetic/music and wall merge mechanic.
6. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask ; A game I grew to love the more I played it. I adore the emphasis on side quests and world building.
7. The Legend of Zelda ; NES. My first memories in life involve watching or playing this game. It's a huge part of who I am and I adore it, despite being archaic in a lot of ways.
8. Super Mario World ; I was fooled into buying a genesis by a sonic ad. A friend playing super mario world convinced me I needed an SNES instead.
9. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker; This probably won't stay on the list for long after BotW comes out, but I enjoyed the aesthetic and freedom to explore.
10. Super Smash Bros. For Wii U ; The best roster (sans snake) and the game just 'feels' right to me.

I think i might be biased towards some franchises. Ok, one franchise in particular

I love way more games than are on my list, but I had to think about the ones i've played the most and replayed the most, as well. I adore stuff like metroid prime or pikmin, but i've only played them each once or twice and don't really have a hankering to go back.

Wow, feels a bit too soon, but on the other hand, with that wiiu final year.
Yeah, WiiU should definitely count, or 3DS doesn't count if not.

  1. Zelda ALttP; Was running out of spots, so as I´m sure OoT will still grasp #1 I´m voting for my other favorite Zelda.
  2. Super Mario World; My favorite non-Zelda game ever. Loved the exploration, secrets and original challenges of the game.
  3. Super Metroid; No other game has managed to replicate the feelings I got playing this the first time.
  4. Super Mario Maker; I love making games, so this was a dream come true to me.
  5. Mario 64; The perfect 3D platformer. Has everything SMW had but in 3D.
  6. Splatoon; Can´t believe I´m putting this over Mario Kart but yeah...the funniest game ever.
  7. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes; Sanctuary Fortress is the best level ever made, so this had to be here.
  8. Bayonetta 2; I love action games, so there´s no way I´d leave Bayo out.
  9. Mario Kart 64; I preffer the racing in MK8, but the Battle Mode of MK64 or screwing people in the jump on Wario Stadium is the most fun I´ve had when playing with other people.
  10. Zelda Skyward Sword; I loved the uses of the wiimote, the time puzzles, the artstyle, the music...I really enjoyed it from start to finish.

The order of the list is almost random, many of the games in that list are some of my favorite ever.

Can´t we choose a top 20? I can´t believe I left out Star Fox 64, FZero X, Wind Waker, Mario Galaxy...:S

Edit: lol, no one has voted for OoT!!

The thing with a lot of Nintendo series is I feel different games often did different things well.

Metroid Prime Trilogy doesn't count obviously but it's hard for me to pick one over the others.

In fact almost every Nintendo series has this for me.

Really tough, but here's mine.

  1. Kid Icarus Uprising
  2. The Wonderful 101
  3. Metroid Prime
  4. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
  5. Xenoblade Chronicles
  6. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  7. Super Mario Galaxy 2
  8. Super Mario World
  9. Super Mario Galaxy
  10. Super Metroid

I really wanted to put Bayonetta 2 on this list, but it just barely doesn't make the cut.

Can this wait until we get to see Zelda Breath of the Wild? Feels like it'll be a potential top 10 all-timer.

But this will be a difficult list with so many great games in there.

1. Pokemon Red; Call it nostalgia, call it what you want. Being like 5-6 years old when pokemon first came out, and with the anime releasing as well, there was no better time to be a child. Pokemania was in all our systems and it was just fucking nuts! I have fond memories of the game. Missingo, unlimited rare candies! copying pokemon on the PC, catching them all. Great stuff.
2. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest; I like DKC more, but DKC2 is the far better game. It does everything pretty much better. Great atmosphere, fun animal buddies, great level design and art, fun hidden stuff and fun bosses.
3. Pokemon Silver ; This is an extension of number 1. Again being that ripe age, nothing else mattered at the time! Same addictive formula.
4. Donkey Kong Country; My favourite DKC. Maybe it has to do with the fact it was the very first game i ever owned (alongside sm:allstars), but i got hooked immediately. Tight platforming with the same things DKC2 has. Lots of hidden paths, animal buddies, cool bosses and atmosphere.
5. Advance Wars; Probably the only SRPG series i actually love. Most of the other ones have that fantasy setting, but not AW. Modern era war with bright colours and a unique system.
6. Super Mario Allstars; As mentioned above, i got this alongside DKC. First taste of mario, but not just 1 game, 3 full games, each one unique and each one heaps of fun.
7. Super Smash Bros; Again, this may be due to nostalgia, but I prefer the first one over the sequels. I thought it was far more charming and focused compared to what followed.
8. Super Mario Kart; Best MK game hands down. No blue shell is the best thing ever! Loved this game, played endless hours, even the ghost/time trials were heaps fun, and i dont even do that with other racing games! My only complaint is that you couldn't use character specific power ups like the A.I could!
9. Super Mario 64; My favourite 3d Mario game. The castle setting/jumping in paintings was so freaken cool, and collecting all those stars was addicting as hell!
10. Advance Wars Days of Ruin; No explanation required. Just good ole AW!

1. Super Smash Bros. Melee
2. Xenoblade Chronicles
3. Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
4. Super Mario Galaxy
5. Super Mario 64
6. Kid Icarus: Uprising
7. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
8. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
9. Pokemon Emerald
10. Mario Kart: Double Dash

Their list of games is insane, picking just 10 games (and putting them in order) will be hard , but here goes. I tried to keep my list a bit diverse, only picking one game from any given series (treating 2D vs 3D as different). Otherwise my list would have mostly just been mainline Mario games. Trended towards DS games a lot since they had some very creative takes on mainline games and introduced online play. Nostalgia plays a huge part too. The top 4 games are actually some of my Greatest of All Time in their respective genres.

1. Super Mario World ; GOAT 2D Platformer
2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time ; GOAT 3D Adventure
3. Super Mario Galaxy ; GOAT 3D Platformer
4. Goldeneye 007 ; GOAT local multiplayer game
5. Tetris DS ; Best version of Tetris ever released with a great online mode
6. Mario Kart DS ; Great game with very fun challenge modes and online mode
7. Super Mario RPG ; Very nostalgic game for me, my first RPG and such a fun game
8. Picross 3D ; One of my favorite puzzle games ever
9. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past ; GOAT 2D Adventure
10. Mario Golf: World Tour ; I always loved Mario sports games and this one topped them all. It was my game of the year when it released.

Left out so many great childhood memories ): 1080, Donkey Kong Country 2, Super Tennis, Wii Sports (might actually have to edit Wii Sports in), Ken Griffey Jr Baseball, Wave Race, Ice Hockey, Excitebike, Mario Kart 64 Battle Mode

I'm thinking I may just wrote for my favorite one-off games because I don't think I can order stuff well. I also feel more recent games will have more prominence in my mind.

1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
2. Super Metroid
3. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
4. Super Mario 64
5. Metroid Prime
6. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
7. Super Mario Galaxy
8. F-Zero GX
9. Donkey Kong (Game Boy)
10. Super Smash Bros. Melee

HM:
• The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
• The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
• Mario Kart 64
• Wave Race 64

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time/3D ; really foundational 3D action-adventure-RPG game that showed us how special large, mostly continuous, highly interactive worlds could be
2. Super Mario Galaxy ; fixed a lot of the issues with Super Mario 64 where "star-fetching" wasn't really a strong concept that made it worthwhile to keep coming back to the same levels 6-7 times. Each mission felt really worthwhile
3. Metroid Prime (GameCube/Wii) ; really great case study for adopting classic Nintendo gameplay with modern genre conventions
4. Super Mario Bros. 3 ; masterclass in creativity, engineering, and audiovisual design. This game is deeper than most modern games
5. Splatoon ; best character IP EAD/EPD's put out since Pikmin
6. Mario Kart 8 ; really refined Mario Kart with great content, visuals, gameplay, and best of all MUSIC, it's a shame about Battle Mode, but I'm mostly over it
7. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening ; this was the pinnacle of 2D Zelda for me. No frills here
8. Xenoblade Chronicles
9. Pikmin 3
10. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Honorable mentions:
Jet Force Gemini
Kid Icarus: Uprising
The Legend of Zelda
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask/3D
Pokemon Gold/Silver
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Super Mario World
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
Wii Sports

1. Super Mario World ;
2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time ;
3. Super Mario 64 ;
4. Super Smash Bros. Melee ;
5. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past ;
6. Super Mario Galaxy 2 ;
7. Banjo Kazooie ;
8. GoldenEye 64 ;
9. Perfect Dark ;
10. Splatoon ;

1. Metroid Prime - no game is perfect, but this comes close.
2. Super Metroid - played it in 2007, truly timeless.
3. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
4. Super Mario Galaxy 2
5. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
6. Perfect Dark
7. Donkey Kong Country 2
8. Super Mario World
9. Super Mario 64
10. Super Smash Bros. Melee

This list was insanely hard to make. I love Zelda but none of them could make the cut!

I remember the first poll result was incredibly poetic with Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 3 being tied, that was amazing.

1. Zelda: Majoras Mask ; My favorite game ever
2. Zelda : OoT ; the greatest masterpiece in gaming
3. Zelda: Twilight Princess ; Would be better than OoT if it came out first.
4. Metroid Prime ; Masterful design
5. Super Mario Galaxy ; the greatest 3D platformer.
6. Super Mario Bros 3 ; greatest 2D platformer.
7. Zelda: Alttp ; best 2D action adventure ever.
8. Legend of Zelda ; most influencial game for me.
9. Super Mario World ; masterpiece
10. Super Metroid ; The best of its kind.

My criteria for my top 10 is how I felt at the time about the title, in relation to other titles during that time. So, for example, Twilight Princess is a much more developed game than Ocarina of Time, but I think Ocarina of time is a far better game for its time, than Twilight was for its time, even though Twilight is one of the best games of its era.

That being said, that criteria does not matter for....

1. Mother 2 / Earthbound

TyFshIY.png

It doesn't matter the era. It doesn't matter if this came out in the 90s or if it came out now. This is, in my opinion, the de facto greatest, and most important videogame ever created, period. People may scoff or even laugh at that idea, but it's so obvious to me. The build of this game transcends the normal critiques we usually associate to determine whether a game is good or not. It transcends gameplay conventions and reaches a level very few games can reach, that of having true artistic merit, next to the likes of the Mona Lisa, or The Persistence of Memory. It's a carefully crafted game where every line of text is meant to tell a story, and evoke a real memory from your life. It's a game where the world is what you make of it, and discovery on your own is encouraged. It's a game where leveling up means something more personal, beyond having a stronger character to get further in the game. Everything in the game is meant to evoke nostalgia of your life, your personal life, your personal feelings, and your personal experiences. No other game has done it nearly close to as well as Earthbound. You cannot approach it as a regular game. It is one of the few games I can think of, where you can confidently say that you cannot convert it to any other medium. It can't be a movie, or a show, or a cartoon, or a comic. It wouldn't work. Not just the best Nintendo game, but the greatest videogame achievement, is Earthbound.

2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

3. Super Mario 64

4. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

5. Super Smash Bros for Wii U

6. Super Mario RPG

7. Goldeneye

8. Super Mario Kart 64

9. Super Mario World

10. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

So many good games, my 3-10 opinion could change by tomorrow. The only ones I am completely sure about is 1 and 2

1. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door - this sort of experience will never be recaptured by Intelligent Systems it seems like. Playing as The Great Gonzales in a fighting tournament in the sky summarizes my love for this game

2. Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald - trumpets have triggered nostalgia ever since. The tropical theme if Hoenn is unique and a great idea tying in with the exploration of a Pokemon game, which makes me look forward to the Alola region

3. Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver - having never played G/S before, Johto was a new region to me. Pokemon following you around + the tranquil atmosphere were great. The Pokewalker was cool and my friends and I all had them. Aaaand... "..."

4. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum - my favorite batch of starters overall, and has my second favorite region (Sinnoh).

5. Super Mario Galaxy 2 - was a near flawless game and a joy to play. I even beat the super hard level (The Perfect Run?)

6. Super Mario Bros 3 - my favorite old school platformer. The powerups were a lot of fun. Frog suit always threw me off though!

7. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - didn't play it until a few years ago, and sailing the seas was a breath of fresh, salty air. Exploration was on point. Breath of the Wild may invoke it, too.

8. Mario Kart Wii - had so much fun with friends and family. Even my non-gaming sisters still like to play it to this day.

9. New Super Mario Bros Wii - same reason as Mario Kart

10. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - my first Zelda, bought a Wii for it too because it looked awesome. Probably the first game I had played with a dark atmosphere. The dungeons and equipment were interesting. Ball and chain link in a snowy castle was fun. Plus, Link is a lefty, like me... Why did the Wii version have to have righty Link? Why?!

Edit: shoot I forgot Melee! Oh well, I have the 3ds version of Smash 4 and can tell if I had a Wii U/when it's released on NX I will like it more then Melee thanks to its roster

1. Kirby Air ride ; Always fun to play and the best Kart racer out there
2. Banjo-Tooie ; Peak Rare and 3D collecting platformer
3. Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door ; the highest point of Mario RPGs
4. Donkey kong country 2 Diddy's Kong quest ; some of the best platforming and ambiance in a game
5. Pikmin 2 ; Great new IP series that improved everything on the sequel
6. Kid Icarus Uprising ; Sakurai really nailed it with this IP revival
7. Fire Emblem Awakening ; This supposedly finale to the series made me finally understand the games
8. Paper Mario ; The first one still holds up and is a fun romp!
9. The Legend of Zelda : The Wind waker; The game that really got me into playing the Zelda series, hella fun
10. Super Mario Galaxy ; The definite take on 3D Mario platforming

1. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask; Simply the best game ever developed by Nintendo. It was such a different formula from Ocarina of Time and every other TLoZ before, that I was afraid it could live up to the "Zelda" name. But it did. And while it wasn't perfect in technical terms, the whole package was truly amazing. The 3DS version improves most of the technical problems, but adds a few problems in gameplay terms (casual mode).
2. Mario Kart 8; The definitive Mario Kart. Not much can be said about this only that it came in a perfect time to justify the ownership of a Wii U.
3. Super Mario World; Might be the tightest platformer developed by Nintendo, and it shows 25 years later.
4. Pokemon Crystal; The highest point of the portable series on GB. Gorgeous graphics (for a system so limited), great music, and the most refined gameplay experience. Gotta Catch 'Em All!
5. Donkey Kong Country;
6. Kirby's Adventure;
7. Super Tennis;
8. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker;
9. Super Smash Bros Melee;
10. Mario Party 3;

1. Super Mario Galaxy ; Nintendo's greatest achievement. A true masterpiece. Probably the best use of gravity based gameplay. When I was able to long jump from side of a planet to another without stopping, I knew I was in for a treat. The amount of imagination and love put into the game was something else. It felt like a Disney movie at times. That's not even getting into the glorious soundtrack. One of Their best soundtracks by far, no question

2. Xenoblade Chronicles ; The greatest RPG of all time. Immense open worlds that are just sitting there waiting for you to explore them, a glorious artstyle that makes you think: "how the hell was this done on the Wii?" A completely engaging story with lovable characters, and the best goddamned soundtrack in gaming history. Period. What I would give just to play this game for the first time again. Truly an experience.

3. Kid Icarus Uprising ; Sakurai's crown jewel. This game has it all: an amazing single player experience, a rewarding multiplayer, and an immense amount of replay value. It also has an incredibly deep combat system as well which is dictated by one simple mechanic: your weapon controls the way that you play. With this system intact, you are able to try out any of the weapon the game throws at you and have a completely different experience, the ride never ends.

4. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island ; The undefeated best 2D platformer of all time. A game that oozes charm. A glorious artstyle that still holds up today, and a soundtrack that still holds after 20 years.

5. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker ; The best Zelda game. The best artstyle, the best combat, and the best exploration. Even with its shortcomings, it still manages to prove that it's the Zelda with the biggest heart.

6. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door ; What is supposed to be a spin off is a game that is able to stand on its own and face against the giants of the genre. Whether it's because of the simple, yet unique humor, or because of the great battle system, or maybe because of the unique characters and story in a Mario game. What's that? A Mario game with a unique cast and story? Sticker Star was the biggest heartbreak in history.

7. Bayonetta 2 ; Nintendo's biggest WTF moment. Why the hell would they fund a violent game like Bayonetta? Why would they fund a not-so popular game like Bayonetta? Why the hell would they release it during their most casual, family- friendly times? Your guess is as good as mine, I'm just glad they did it.

8. Metroid Prime ; Back in the early 2000s, before this game released, everyone thought it was going to suck. First-Person Metroid? A No-Name developer? THEIR VERY FIRST TITLE? What did we get? A game that shattered all expectations and rocked our faces off. Metroid was translated into the 3D realm gloriously. The exploration, the puzzles, and Samus' arsenal all managed to fit well in 3D.

9. Sin & Punishment: Star Successor ; My God, where do I even start with this game? Do I start with its simple, yet difficult to master gameplay system? Do I start with the plethora of amazing boss battles? Or do I start with showing you an amazing display of high level gameplay footage? Treasure's best game, no arguments. Game is Godlike, wish it sold more.

10. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds ; A welcome return to form to the old-school Zelda titles with some influences from the new titles sprinkled in. It's the perfect mix that created one of the best Zelda titles.

Honorable Mentions:
Star Fox 64
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Super Mario 64
Mario & Luigi: SuperStar Saga
Super Smash Bros. Melee

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
3. Super Mario 64
4. Goldeneye 007
5. Mario Kart 64

BorkBork

The Legend of BorkBork: BorkBorkity Borking
1. Earthbound ; Warm fuzzy feelings (and pickles). It's nostalgia distilled.
2. Super Metroid ; Perfectly paced, endlessly replayable.
3. Mother 3 ; Emotionally textured storytelling like no other game. Borders on being literary.
4. Metroid Prime ; Beautiful environmental storytelling, nails the isolation feel.
5. Pikmin 3 ; Perfect mix of time management, challenge, and exploration culminating the previous iterations. Gorgeous to boot.
6. Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan ; Super satisfying gameplay and a great challenge. Single-handedly justified the DS early on in its lifecycle, before the deluge of incredible games.
7. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D ; Unique in the annals of game history in the story it tells and the way it approaches it.
8. Super Mario World ; The most original and memorable 2D Mario for me. Level design, enemies, power-ups, everything is amazing.
9. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance ; Pinnacle of the series for me. Distinct characters, coherent story, sweet challenge.
10. PunchOut! Wii ; One of the funnest and most challenging puzzle/reflex games ever.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Timeless design mixed with unparalleled pacing.
2. Super Mario Galaxy - A game where simply moving in a thrill, the level design and mechanics offer endless possibilities
3. Super Metroid - A game where every pixel feels like it was made with love and care, Super Metroid is a perfect video game.
4. Earthbound - A game that changed what an RPG had to be and offers a feel of adventure unlike any other. I paid for a physical cartridge after playing the virtual console release.
5. Mario Kart 8 - The best game in one of the best multiplayer series, the mechanics are perfect and the track design and production values are so good.
6. Xenoblade Chronicles - An RPG that takes you across the world with characters and scenerios you'll never forget.
7. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - Easily one of the best 2D platformers Nintendo has ever made, so much care went into each level.
8. Metroid Prime - This is one of the few games I consider "a jump", Prime took what Super Metroid had already achieved but gave it a whole new perspective.
9. Super Smash Bros Melee - One of the most enjoyable fighting games that anyone can play, so much depth to it too if you wish to dive deeper.
10. Kid Icarus: Uprising - A rollercoaster of a game, while some don't care for it, I consider Uprising the very best handheld game of all time.

4. Kid Icarus: Uprising

6. Metroid Prime
7. Mother 3 (I only played the English fan translation, but I thought it was brilliant)
8. Wii Sports
9. Mario Kart 8
10. Splatoon

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

I don't even know where to start. The world was varied but still restricted enough to not get lost. The pacing, gameplay and music was and is pretty much unmatched. Dungeons had the perfect mix of simpleness and complexity while movement in a 3D environment was still a challenge itself. Next there was the transition between young and adolescent Link; a metaphor for the growth of the whole franchise. Characters were quirky in a very likeable way and memorable even beyond the games last scene. Besides the story progression players could participate in various tasks while none ot them felt unnecessary because they had full-fledged mechanics and design elements themselves. It's a masterpiece and the only game I would refer to as one.

2. Xenoblade Chronicles

Xenoblade Chronicles was a game I've read about a lot and wanted to play for a long time. People praised it for a meaningful and convoluted story, great world and enemy design, solid gameplay and an amazing soundtrack. It delivered on all fronts.

3. Pokémon Gold

While many people have fond memories of it's predecessors I personally enjoyed the second entry in the Pokémon franchise much more. It improved on many aspects: the spritework was gorgeous, the battles were a lot faster, the new Pokémon were on a par with the old ones, they added more content by including Kanto as well as increasing the obtainable badges to 16 and had the best climax by adding Red as a final challenge.

4. The Wonderful 101

Harder to get into than the souls series, it's needless complexity gameplay wise is only matched by it's lack of an steady overview. Throw in some forced usage of the WiiU's gamepad as well as stereotypical characters and you have a game that many people dislike.
I love it.

5. Star Fox 64

It takes about 30 - 45 minutes to play through this gem and it's great gameplay, diverse stages (whose selection is determined by your playstyle), solid bosses and memorable sound will make you come back again and a again.

6. Mario Kart 8

I always thought Mario Kart 64 was the ultimate king when it comes to fun-racer. Then one day Nintendo decided to release the best Mario Kart ever created. Mario Kart 8 does not only feature a great roster and the best gameplay in the franchise, but also the most well-designed courses with tons of shortcuts and colorful environments. More than two years after it's initial release it's still regularly played by me and my friends.

7. Super Mario 64

This game is what modern platformers try to emulate. It showed how movement in a 3D environment has to look like, made the player get comfortable with the controls during the first few stages and then got progressively harder with more obstacles and increasing gaps between platforms. Getting 120 stars isn't as easy as some people state and the clever design of the different stages can keep you motivated for quite some time. Soundtrack is pretty solid as well.

8. Super Mario Maker

Probably the biggest surprise from Nintendo since the announcement of the Wii. Some people claim that this game made the New Super Mario Bros. series redundant while Nintendo stated that it won't. We'll have to see what the future holds but until then players have (almost) total freedom to create and share amazing 2D levels with different objects, backgrounds and graphics. It's amazing to see what the community created and to realize what could have been if the WiiU was more successful.

9. Mario Kart 64

A step below Mario Kart 8 in terms of gameplay, course design and content but the fantastic multiplayer also known as battle mode makes this a must-play with friends.

10. Hotel Dusk: Room 215

I'm probably the only one mentioning this game but it's a really good point-and-click adventure for the Nintendo DS. The story is pretty convoluted and has some good surprises to it. Characters are treated like multidimensional human beings and that's what makes the dialogue in this game so brilliant.
You also hold your DS like a book while you play. Anything more to say?

1. Super Mario 64: Revolutionized games as we knew it.
2. Super Mario Galaxy: Galaxy 2 may be the better game, but Galaxy was the game with the most impact.
3. Super Smash Bros. Melee: Took everything from the original Smash 64 and improved everything tenfold. Still played in major tourneys to this day.
4. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest: A sequel that was bigger, faster and stronger too. Gorgeous graphics and style to this day, masterful level design and David Wise is always king.
5. Kid Icarus Uprising: The controls aren't for everyone, but the characters, music, gameplay, content and such are top class.
6. Banjo-Kazooie: The best non-Mario 3D platformer there is.
7. Mario Kart 8: Best gameplay, best graphics, basically the best MK out there...except for the roster and battle mode.
8. Super Smash Bros. For Wii U: Not quite as good as Melee but it nonetheless holds a massive and balanced roster consisting of many important gaming icons such as Pac-Man and Cloud. Oh, and the online actually works too.
9. Pikmin: A unique and charming RTS with elegant design.
10. Super Metroid: "Super" indeed. A bit on the easy side but the game excels in everything from sound, music, graphics, and most importantly, gameplay.

Shout outs to Punch-Out!! Wii, Splatoon, Banjo-Tooie and Super Mario Galaxy 2.
