The Official Awesome Phantasy Star Universe Thread

PSU is Awesome, Awesome is PSU! (This is my second "official" thread for a game, and it's a 360 game, wouldja look at that!)

Also available on PC and PS2. (But why buy it on PS2? lawl.)

Phantasy Star Universe
------------------------------------

Phantasy Star Universe is the long-awaited followup to the original game, Phantasy Star Online, which that game itself is an MMORPG offshoot of the original Phantasy Star series on the Sega Genesis. Phew!

The main gameplay of the game is a lot different than most MMO's - you are meeting players and buying items and doodads in a main "hub" area (most usually a town), then grab a party, and go on missions together! (Which is exactly like PSO.) The real difference between this game and PSO is the engaging Craft System, the New Photon Art System, and the My Room features, which is a sort of personal room to decorate how you want it to, and players can visit it and hang out with you there. (interesting to note, My Room is its own server. So there shouldn't be any lag there.)

Phantasy Star Universe on the 360 is unique from the PC and PS2 versions - it contains Widescreen functionality which is only available otherwise on a PC monitor that supports widescreen; and is rendered in 720p, if I'm not mistaken. The other noteworthy difference between the 360 version and the PC/PS2 versions is the 360 version was given a short Beta to allow Sega to gauge how bogged down their server can get.

The online portion of the game (which a lot of people will really only be playing anyway, sadface) is unique as well: There are four races you can choose yourself to play as, and from what I hear in the chatter, you really shouldn't pick human. :lol

They are:

- Humans (average race, good at everything, not best in anything)
- Casts (robot race, great at accuracy, sucky at magic)
- Newmans (elf-eared race, great at magic, sucky at attack/defense)
- Beasts (dog-eared race, great at attack/defense, sucky at accuracy)

It's interesting to note that Humans created ALL three races themselves. (What, they get lonely?) (Apparently Humans are smart, too.)

Classes breakdown is a lot easier than PSO, where once you chose your character they were a distinct race, distinct class, and distinct gender. No more! Customization can be done all down to the bushy hairs on your chinny chin chin. Classes break down like this:

- Ranger - Ranged support/damage class.
- Force (not THAT kind, magic we're talking here) - Damage dealer/Healer class
- Hunter - Melee/Tanker class. More melee, less tanker.

There are also "Expert Classes" which are basically double ups on your favorite class, or inter-class combinations with emphasis on one class's strengths and the second class's strengths as a backup. Then there is a jack of all trades class built just for humans. :lol

But enough of the game, let's get SCREENSHOTS UP IN HIZZEAR!

Right now in the Japanese PSU game, they're having the Halloween Event, as it might be seen in PSO.

In it, you can gain:

Wallpapers and Items for your My Room
halostatue2lx7.jpg

New Rappy enemies dressed up in Halloween Costumes(called Hallow Rappies in PSO, I believe)
halloweenrappy.JPG

New Items Dropped in the Spirit of Halloween
PSU_165.jpg

The support of Sega in this game is phenomenal. I've gotten reports on the game that the newest update into the Japanese game has upped the difficulty considerably in later dungeons. Which means that the game may seem easy, know that difficulty IS coming.. just I don't know when.

The Halloween events are probably going to be in our version as well, as Sega did the same thing for PSO when it came out and JP got the events too.

Also kiryogi has some neat information about the JP PSU (which will inevitably come our way), but that person is obsessed with lording the JP version over the US one, so read kiryogi's posts with that knowledge. :lol

So, who's planning to game on in PSU (360) with me at launch???

Cast right here!

sorry to post and run, but I really need sleep and I just had the urge to post this thread.

Also, do me proud GAF! I want to come back to 3 pages :lol

Not trying to troll, but I found myself not "getting" this game. I liked PSO back then, but basically playing PSO2.0 in 2006 just feels outdated to me. All I've seen (and I've been to all three places I could access right now, ie two of the planets and the colony) are the same three types of enemies (smaller Rappy-types, four-legged ones and big two-legged ones) but with different skins and attacks depending on where you find them, linear and small levels where each mission description is basically just "kill some shit" and a overcomplicated world -- like it's not very convenient at all, you have to take long ways around to get to places...

Nice customization with the weapons/upgrades/synthesis, though.

Alright, last post and then I sleep, lol.

It's a fair assumption to say then, that if you don't like the SAME FORMULA you liked before, with better enhancements, graphics, it's safe to assume you don't like Mega Man games? Devil May Cry games? Zelda games? PSO itself?

I mean, we all knew it wasn't going to deviate from what made it popular, so why hate what you know what it was going to be?

I really have a sense that this game will kick ass in Japan and will be left to the flies in america/europe (just like all previous pso games).

ssToo bad tho.. it looks like it kicks ass.. :(

Oh maaan I so want in on this. Except I still have yet to finish Okami and just got Chibi-Robo on the cheap and have yet to even open it. Maybe if I get caught up on everything I need to be caught up in elsewhere in life I'll reward myself with this damn game. WANT.

There's a difference between a design formula and technical limitations. PSO wasn't a true MMO because the Dreamcast came with a 56k modem. What's their excuse for the game not having a persistent world and larger parties in 2006?

(And what do crappy, tiny levels and 0 enemy variation have to do with the "formula"?)

If it had parties with 40 ppl it would just be another MMORPG clone. I actually prefer small groups, it allows for real conversation and you get to know the people you are playing with.

Yeah, the gameplay itself I don't have a terrible problem with, but the level and enemy design/variety are both shockingly bad. It's as if they embraced the crappy aspects of the original, thinking that people liked them just because they liked the game overall--like Everquest 2 and Everquest. Having to craft everything is dumb, too. Who likes gameplay that consists of shuffling through (too many) layers of interface?

I don't have a problem with the world not being persistent or party size. I actually like the groups being smaller, because with too many people it feels like you're insignificant instead of powerful.

Diablo 2 is still a better game than this, sadly. I actually re-bought an Xbox 360 recently just for this game, but now I don't think I will even buy it when it comes out.

Except it sorta didn't, for PS2 at least. Game started off well, but the servers were [are?] completely ****ed and nobody could get on for a long time. Just as bad as the Test Drive Unlimited BS I've been hearing, making people just completely forget about the game [even if it has an actual single player story].

Last look it was down to, like, 79th in the top selling games in Japan.

We at the textures in those shots.. are there any better images you could have used?

I agree. I mean, I like smaller parties too, but I would've liked to see the option to put together 50-man raids on enormous bosses. I think that type of thing is one of the genre's biggest strengths.

But the big problem is still the levels/enemies. I don't think the combat is all that hot either...and when seemingly all missions boil down to killing shit, that's a deal-breaker for me.

My biggest gripe with the game was the repetitive monotonous combat.

TAP X TAP X TAP X TAP X... (and every once in a while) TAP Y

...still debating on buying it though

Wait, they have the same kind of combat and enviroments? I was under the impression that PSO was like that because of the limitations of the Dreamcast... ouch. :(

I think most people who are in doubt should just hold off on PSU. The gameplay is and always has been a love/hate thing. The atmosphere of the games plays a huge part, too.

QFT.

This is the first thing I think about everytime I evaluate the PSU monthly fee. (Not to mention all the holy-****-awesome shit coming out this Fall and early '07. Do I really want to invest in this game anyway?)

Thing is, the unified voicechat is sweet, and my friend really wants me to get the game. Maybe if I can get it free from Toys R Us, or sub $40 from P-A.com..

Getting the PC version, just got myself a wired usb 360 controller so I don't have to try and run around with the keyboard, after playing the 360 beta I don't think I can ever play psu without a pad :)

UK player but importing, hope to see some gaffers ingame next week.

Day one. Got mine pre-ordered. I stopped playing the beta because I picked up Splinter Cell and don't want to ruin PSU anymore until I get the full package. It's just everything PSO was plus more. So if you liked PSO...you'll love PSU. If not, it doesn't do anything drastic to break from the old formula.

Although there were some people that judged the demo too quick, by calling it a one button, button-masher. I'll have you know as you level up you get new spells, and techniques and you can assign them to different buttons. So really, it's a multi-button button masher;)

Which suffice to say doesn't bother me one bit. After all, it is just Streets of Rage online with swords...and that's all I will need to be happy for the next 6 months.

Nice thread and all, but you could at least rehost those images for yourself at least. And all I've done recently is mainly post PC pics and help people. No certain region bias yet.

wow that's interesting halloween stuff. I played the beta and it has some nice artwork and music but the gameplay seemed very shallow from the short amount of time I worked on it and it's hard for me to get interested in a MMO with limited depth

I'll be there. That is, if they allow us to purchase a Guardian License and play the US version with a European credit card. That is still very much up in the air. We could end up having to wait until November 24.

Let's just put it this way, did you like PSOffline?
Oh come on. The single player campaign with Ethan is a fully fledged action RPG with a complete story. Hardly comparable to PSO offline. Extra mode is, but that's extra.

I'm getting the PS2 version.

Can you please elaborate on the whole don't pick a human thing. Thats who I was planning on using for my first character.

Basically according to the PSU diehards, Humans are all-around characters, while Beasts and such are better dedicated characters for a particular class. Humans don't get special abilities when they reach a particular levels, while Beasts and Newmans do.

I will so be there. My life will end. I'll be Force-ing my way through waves of enemies and bosses. :D

Hell yeah I'm buying this ****. The beta was frustrating at first but it brought back that old PSO feeling pretty quickly. I figure I'll pay and play for at least a few months.

Ok sounds like a simple choice then, I will be a beast.

And as true as that may be, this is also true: Still more fun than your typical Final Fantasy XI turn-based battle system where you just sit there and can pretty much do nothing the entire time.

Just because the 360 version isn't the only one.

Pre-ordered the PS2 version with the PSU soundtrack, can't wait.

Does anyone know if there will be a free online trial offer with the game? I plan on paying for a month or two, but I'd like to try it out before committing to it.

You're in for some real dissapointment.

Count me in for the 360 version as soon as it's out. I've played a Hunter and a Force in the beta, and really enjoyed myself as the latter. Hell, I'll probably re-create my last character in the retail version. =)

I've got a question that I know I've seen asked before, but didn't get a clear answer.
What happens to your characters if you play online for a couple of months, then quit for while, and sometime later resume buying guardian licences? Will your characters be deleted after a set time, or are they kept on the server?

You're playing it in Japanese aren't you? Hardly a fair evaluation of the story mode.

PSO didn't have anything that qualified as a story, let alone well developed NPC's. That alone puts PSU far ahead of it's predecessor.

I believe your characters are kept on your system. Not on the servers.

How isn't it a fair evaluation? It's not like it was hard to understand or anything. PSU's plot and premise is extremely cliche and contrived. Very linear and doesn't leave any room for much. Maybe Episiode 2 will, but the whole 12 episode season of anime style really doesn't let them do much. Not to mention I'm also getting the story mode with A+ cast, which is completed wasted due to the horrendous writing. It also must be said that it's pretty damn easy and unbalanced broken thanks to Super Ethan as well ._. It's a complete joke.

Gyrian Seed: Serverside, in JP, they warn you that about a certain period of inactivity, your characters will be deleted.
