Mass Effect Andromeda still targeted for Q1 2017, but EA is open to delaying it

This will be the first of many EA threads.

EA said:
On the Mass Effect question, really our focus – the way to think about it is our focus is on building great games. Right now, Mass Effect is tracking extremely well. The game looks beautiful, and we're really pleased with its progress. However, as you've seen, we are willing to make moves in launch date if we feel it's necessary to deliver the right player experience. And our guidance assumes that Mass Effect continues to be in this year, but it gives us some flexibility that we might choose to move it either a week or three or four or five months if we have to based on what we want to make sure in terms of delivering the right experience for the player. So no news on Mass Effect other than we continue to have it in our guidance. And the moment that changes, we'll certainly let everyone know.

We're November 2016, we've barely seen anything of this AAA game and we're supposed to think it'll be released before the end of March 2017? Of course it'll get delayed.

Do note that they reiterated that progress is still good.

This is mainly to address fan accusations that EA rush Bioware to premature releases (eg ME3 and DA2).

Just get it out of the way already. Day 1 no matter what, anyway

So this practically guarantees a delay. I'm hoping they release it in the summer, when there is typically a dearth of AAA releases.

I like it better this way. Save it all for the big blitz at the end, and it also ensures that there's less disappointment when the finished product is different from was shown before (i.e. DA:I).

I mean, I always like the prospect of not seeing a media blitz of a game until it's out soon. They kinda pulled that off with Fallout 4 last year. But there is no way it's actually happening with EA's new Mass Effect game in a 4-month window.

It's the year of our Yorda 2016. Of course it'll get delayed. Everything's been delayed! If you aren't delayed, you might as well not exist.

They want to release the game alongside Battlefront 2 to make sure it bombs like Titanfall 2 being released alongside BF1.
Well played EA.

If you need to publicly say you're not afraid to delay a game, you should probably just buck up and just delay it earlier than when release is closing in.

Very fortunate for them that given their reputation, a delay would generally be seen as spectacular news. Or at least, that's probably what they hope.

When you've waited so long for a new Mass Effect game you'll take anything at this point but also understand that sometimes a delay can be for the best.

We've barely seen anything of an entire new piece of hardware and it's set to launch that same month.

Interesting they would go out of their way to say they are open to delaying it. I'm thinking they see there may be a real shot of that happening. Not saying its a for sure thing but it must be somewhat on the table in terms of where its at in development

These kind of delays are "we've completed putting together all the pieces of the game on schedule but OMG ALL THE BUGS!"

N7 day is in 5 days. Its likely we'll see more very soon if its on track for march 2017 like they claim.

LOL. Was there ever any doubt?

Exactly.

edit: The only thing that could make me any more salty is to find out that Tyranny won't be releasing next week.

Honestly, this shouldn't come as a surprise to people. The game missing its supposed last E3
(yeah, I'm not counting that "trailer")
should have raised some serious red flags to anyone who has followed the development of western AAA titles before.

There's a pretty big difference between an upcoming console launch and an upcoming game. With more points of data for the latter, it's a far more unlikely scenario in terms of marketing for a AAA software launch. Not to mention the very real and very frequent trend of delays that we've been having.

I can wait a few more months if it means the game will run flawlessly and have amazing content. Mass Effect was my favorite new IP from last gen, so I want this to be the best it can be.

They've already indicated they're going the Fallout 4 route.

Edit: Nirolak, can you find the story where Patrick Soderlund indicated they weren't showing it during the summer because they were focused on their fall titles?

They're putting a trailer out in a week anyway. No one is taking about trying to launch it out of nowhere.

On one hand I really want to play more Mass Effect as soon as it's ready.

But on the other, I know March is going to be smack dab in the middle of playing Persona 5, so I don't really need another big RPG at the same time.

If they need to delay it, go for it.

Alright EA, I'm going to make you a deal:
You can delay Andromeda for as long as you wish, but you have to give us a Mass Effect: Andromeda multiplayer beta on November 7th with regular fresh content & tweaks/fixes until the day Andromeda launches.

Are... are they teasing a delay?

An analyst asked if the release date for Mass Effect was flexible (as in, if it needed to be delayed out of the fiscal year for strategic or quality reasons, was that financially possible), and then EA gave an answer of "Why yes, absolutely! In fact here's this whole possible set of delay windows..."

I love having options.

Late winter/early spring is loaded with games.

Despite it being one of my most anticipated games, I'd be perfectly fine with May-July release date for Andromeda.
