Remember:

DO NOT just post the title of the movie you wratched. It isn't conducive at all to the kind of discussion & communication we want to engender here, because it tells us nothing of you, the movie, the impact of the latter on the former. Post scores, descriptions, essays, poems, gifs, hashtags, whatever provides you the best outlet for personal expression, you unique little digital snowflake. Also, Marvel movies are mostly shit. - icarus-daedelus

Because of La La Land's prominence in the OP, its Best Picture front-runner status and the likelihood it will be the most talked about movie this month on GAF outside of Rogue One, I'm requoting my comments from my screening of the film at TIFF back in September...

La La Land - As much as I appreciate the look and aesthetic of this film, I can't help but feel like it tries to play things a little too cute. It seems to suffer from commitment issues... whether it's to the romance between Sebastian and Mia, fully original tracks (we get a cover montage at one point), developing anyone outside of the two leads or just using them as musical number window dressing, actually remaining in Hollywood/LA or even the ending (which gets a 'what if' cop out).

So what we wind up with is a finished product that tries to have its cake and eat it too and it winds up feeling less special as a result.

That said, I was pleasantly surprised by how funny it wound up being. It's assuredly a star vehicle for Emma Stone and the favourite to win Best Picture but I can't help feeling let down that I'm not more enthusiastic about it. 8/10
This is a film that tries to be all things to all people and suffers as a result. I really do love its look. The production and costume design is immaculate... even if most of the showcase moments have been given away in the trailers. This movie is a sumptuous feast for the eyes and ears... but you'll feel a little sick afterwards as if you just gorged on too much Halloween candy.

Saw Your Name a couple days ago at an indie cinema in London and can't stop thinking about it. Pretty much a lock for my favourite film of the year. Keep listening to the OST on Spotify and getting teary-eyed.

Top 5 First Views in November:

5) Things to Come (2016)
4) I Am Not Your Negro
3) The Edge of Seventeen
2) Malcolm X
1) The Wind (1928)

Honorable mentions: The War Room, Blue Collar, Affliction, 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her, Allied, O.J.: Made in America, Men Go to Battle, and The Red Turtle.

Actually comparatively quiet month, but I did see Suicide Squad, which supplanted Now You See Me 2 as the worst film of 2016.

I probably only saw 5 films in November heh. Been way too busy lately. But I did just go and see:

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (7/10) - Adapting books into films feels like a fool's errand, mostly, and without having read the novel myself it still seems apparent what went wrong here. There are so many ideas packed into this thing and none of them really have time to develop, whether it's Billy's relationship to his sister (or other characters), supporting characters in general, elements of subtext, and even the meta-commentary about Hollywood adaptations itself. Too often the movie is cute when it feels like it should be going in a lot harder. There's not enough anger, or bite. Ang Lee knows what he's doing, though (the "it's not a movie without a love interest" subplot proves that enough) so while the screenplay may be lacking, or the project may have bitten off more than it can chew, or perhaps even if Lee himself was simply not the man for the job, despite his clear sincerity... nevertheless, I still think it's a good movie. There are good ideas in here. I can see where the story is going, and at the very least I'm interested in the book now. And Ang Lee just knows how to make a damn movie, you know? It's still compelling and entertaining and the ending actually hit me.

I saw the 120fps version and loved it. I think Ang Lee makes some questionable artistic choices, but I also see why he wanted HFR because hot damn every scene in Iraq is killer. Not just the big action scene, but even an earlier scene when they're walking through the market, and Billy is super tense and scanning for danger, all of the quick panning and stuff the camera is doing in HFR, and the absolute clarity that provides, really heightens the tension and conveys Billy's hyper-vigilance and alertness. It's great stuff. That's probably not going to be a popular opinion, though. I know HFR freaked a lot of people out back with The Hobbit. I kinda dug it there, too, even though The Hobbit movies are seriously some of the worst movies I've sat through this decade.

Ugh I can't wait for La La Land.

Oh yeah I watched a WHOPPING 3 movies. I've seen 166 films in 2016 so far, and honestly just didn't feel like watching anything the last few weeks. Films is dead guys.

The Executioner
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Arrival

All great.

I put down 32 movies last month even though it sure didn't feel like I watched much. I really tried to take a break after October but looks like I still kept pace on weekends. So my top 10 new watches were:

Throne of Blood
The Wailing
Hacksaw Ridge
The Gift
Phantasm
Rec 2
Arrival
The Exorcist 3
The Last Winter
Airport

Watched the Last Winter last night and enjoyed it quite a bit. Ron Perlman plays a pretty good asshole boss in what is basically an Apocalypse story if the permafrost melted. What I really liked about it was the Thing vibe/feel it has. Winter can suck it with all its cold bullshit but I love the setting in the Thing on some remote science station where it's cold as fuck out. That isolation. This pretty much takes place in the exact setting except in Alaska and follows a drill team. Now that's where the Thing comparisons end because this is more psychological and has some cheesy effects later on but the core story makes up for it. It's not earth shattering but I did enjoy it quite a bit.

Last week I watched Repulsion (1965) and Possession (1981) back to back while being semi-tired. I'm glad that I didn't wake up with PTSD the next morning.

Both fantastic movies of course, never seen the latter before.

Top new viewings in November:

1. Hacksaw Ridge
2. Doctor Strange
3. Into the Forest
4. Pride & Prejudice and Zombies
5. Money Monster

I think Hacksaw Ridge was the only real "top tier" movie I saw in November, though. #2 - #5 are 3* or less.

Top films seen for the first time - November edition

1. Creed
2. Zootopia
3. Room
4. Brooklyn

Worst : Josy and the Pussycats

Biggest waste of time : The Hunger Games (part 3 is actually the "best" one but they're all pretty useless, ugly and totally devoid of meaning)

I saw 34 films in November (woo, unemployment!), 10 of those being new theatrical releases.

Top 5 new theatrical screenings:

1. The Handmaiden
2. The Edge of Seventeen
3. Hacksaw Ridge
4. Arrival
5. Moana

Top 5 older films (mostly TCM viewings):

1. Ninotchka
2. Seven Days in May
3. The Sting
4. Trouble in Paradise
5. Limelight

And my first review for the new thread (technically a November 30th viewing, though I guess it was technically December 1st somewhere in the world when I saw it):

The Handmaiden (2016): Divided into three parts of unequal length, this is a very faithful (setting change aside) adaptation of Sarah Waters' brilliant novel Fingersmith for most of the first two parts, before departing wildly (albeit in a way that, ironically, the narrators of the novel both comment on as a possibility at differing times). Tonally it's a lot jazzier than the novel's somber English Gothic aesthetic, which took some getting used to, but it's a very fun, highly stylish film. I do think it perhaps takes a little too long to wrap up after
revealing that Sook-hee and Hideko have decided to turn the tables on everybody (which is also, coincidentally, the point where the film departs wildly from the text. The outcome is never in doubt after that point, and we're left watching a prolonged setpiece where the two villains end up killing each other and the protagonists go through the overly detailed motions of escape.

Worst of November for me was a short on Shudder called Innsmouth. Not only was the effects bad but the acting was horrid. The short was so bad I can still remember how shitty it was like a memory of something that tasted awful.

Biggest disappointment was Dom Hemingway. It had a lot of potential but managed to fail at everything it should have done well.

Theater movies in November:

1. Arrival
2. Moana
3. Hacksaw Ridge
4. Doctor Strange
5. Fantastic Beasts

Also I watched Mononoke for the first time which was excellent. And Hateful 8 which I enjoyed much more on rewatch.

It's awards season and there's about a dozen of these happening now but here are this year's winners from NYFCC for anyone interested.

Moonlight and Manchester dominate until La La Land unexpectedly snatches Best Film.

This is how I see it going down

December line up looks like:
Moana - tomorrow
Arrival - Saturday
Rogue One - already bought tix for Dec 16
Albert Finney's Scrooge - Christmas Eve tradition
Passengers - currently planned for Christmas Day

My wife and I usually get a movie per week or so via streaming or Redbox, so we'll see what else gets added to the list above.

Also, my brother and his family will be in town after Christmas and we usually fire up something on Blu-Ray that they haven't seen. Now, he is usually pretty psyched to see something like Civil War or Star Trek Beyond but he has two college-age daughters who aren't necessarily interested in those. So, not sure what we'll fire up to watch this year.

Does anyone know anything about when The Handmaiden will show up for VOD on Amazon? I feel like The Neon Demon had showed up online by this point in the release schedule :\

Doctor Strange - Visually impressive and a lot of fun. There was plenty of levity though the jokes and gags didn't always land, and it was mighty imaginative. I thought Strange could have benefitted from a more unique personality, as he came off like a surgeon version of Tony Stark minus the womanizing. The story was serviceable, not bad but not remarkable either. As a long-time fan of the character I thoroughly enjoyed the climactic "final boss" fight.

I think it's still touring in a couple of cities, but with any luck, it'll be up by the end of the month. I will be on that like white on rice.

Well, it's scheduled to be released on Blu-ray in January, so one would imagine by then.

Actually, Amazon does VOD release first, then the Blu-ray a couple of weeks later, and then it hits Prime a couple of weeks after that.

The VOD release is important for them because they sell that on every storefront, including iTunes and VUDU.

It was a bad movie, I knew that going in but still. If it wasn't for Jackie I would've probably never watched it.

Generic story, bad fight choreography, bad camera work / editing, lame cliche dialogue / setups.

The best bit was two of the guys (I won't spoil who) from the Lucky Stars series were in this, which surprised me!

Saw The Handmaiden last night and really enjoyed it. Park Chan-Wook has really matured in his treatment of women and this is the pinnacle. It's more a touching love story than anything else, though it still has his signature horrid twists. And, WOW, those sex scenes...!

I haven't been seeing as many movies these past few months. The Invitation was near the top of my list, but Arrival is up there. I get the feeling that, when I see Moonlight, it's gonna skyrocket to the top. Even the trailer made my room dusty.
