Switch Flaw: No Way To Charge Joy-Con's Externally Without $30 Different Grip

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

So have I got this right?

The joy-cons don't have a usb charging slot and the grip bundled with the controller doesn't charge the controllers, so the only way to charge your controllers is to use the tablet? So you can't play on your tv?

And with the joy-cons being so small and including gyro's, hd rumble, accelerometers, and a nfc reader, I don't see the battery life being good.

that's utterly ludicrous.
Included grip doesn't charge. Want it to charge? Pay for the grip that does.
Here :
From the Japanese site: https://www.nintendo.co.jp/hardware/...ies/index.html
"You can use "Joy-Con (L)" and "Joy-Con (R)" as a grip type controller.
Unlike the "Joy - Con grip" that comes with the main unit set, you can also charge "Joy - Con" while using the included USB charging cable, so you do not have to worry about running out of the battery."

Nintendo's also always been good with naming and in the What's Included page on the store it only says "Joy con Grip" unlike the "Joy Con Charging Grip".

They said it in the Treehouse stream as well. (can't link because Youtube seems to have bugged out and is missing the end of the hardware review, but they clearly said there would be an accessory later on that could charge the joycons while gripped)

So, this probably deserves it's own topic. Since the Joy-Con's don't have slots to charge, and the included Grip doesn't, the only way to charge is to slot the joy-cons back into the Switch, and abandon TV play for a bit.

Unless you stump up $30 for the one that does. That they could bundle in there from the start?

Now you're playing with carefully rationed out power?

The one bundled with the initial package charge the controllers, I'm quite sure they told that. It doesn't make any sense otherwise.

Jeez, the hate on the system is high.

From the company that sold you: a handheld with no charger, comes the latest hot tech: a controller.... with no charger.

You charge them by attaching them to the system no? That's how I charge my PS4 controller, seems like a non issue.

I thought they said that a Joy-Con Grip comes with the console. I guess it'd still be an issue if you wanted to use more than one Joy-Con pair at the same time, though.

I'll probably use a Pro controller most of the time when playing on TV. Can we click the jcons on while docked?

If so, would work to switch out two pairs of joys too. That solves the same charging problem, but also gives you two extra controllers for whenever you need that.
I thought it came with a charging grip?
I'm confused on it too. Messaging seems to be unclear on if all grips are Charging Grips, or if some don't charge.

The implication seemed to be that the grip included didn't charge? I could be wrong though.

the one that comes bundled with the system charges the controllers, stop with the clickbait

if you have 4 controllers from the same console, it just a matter of switching the ones being charged... I don't see an issue here since the console comes with the charger grip

Yikes.

There's been plenty discussion in various threads about the difference between "Joy-Con Grip" and "Joy-Con Charging Grip". I now believe the included one does not charge.
Isn't there a relevant japanese info text, that someone can link?

I really would like some definitive source on this, either way.

Yeah, do you have a source on the packed-in grip not charging before this gets out of hand?

This needs to be cleared up asap. I am confused. Why does Nintendo list the one included as simply "Joy Con Grip" and not "Joy Con Charging Grip" like the separate sku then?

Edit: Seems like Nintendo have cleared it up and the news ain't good!

So even if the Switch is docked, if you're playing a local two-player game and the Joy-Con's batteries are low, there's no way to charge them individually and play? Even with your own USB charger?

Not great for long Mario Kart sessions.

Is there really two kinds of grips?

Charging and Non Charging?

That seems to be the question. You'd think all the Grips would be, but that accessory is specifically listed as a Charging one?

Well... fuck.

There's some confusion on whether or not the bundled grip is a different grip. That would be really weird and unfortunate if true but I'd like some clarity on the matter before I jump to any conclusions here.

Yep, they really are two separate grips and it's ridiculously stupid.

Uhh...I have to do this with my PS4 and pretty much every other wireless controller console, anyway?

Unless I'm misunderstanding this.

Yeah I literally had this realisation an hour ago.

Out of the box there is no instant solution to plug your controllers in when playing on TV.

I'm just genuinely stunned. I can forget about an easy headphone solution on TV as well.

Aw Nintendo, not like this.
