Where did Horizon go

Jeez what is going on with the UK charts when games like Rocket League, Overwatch and GTAV are still holding on when the big new releases are just disappearing off the charts in a few weeks. I would understand if the quality wasnt there but especially with games like Horizon I would have expected better legs.

Horzion was already out of the top 10 last week .
It's been a month and a half and it has no MP .

Those games are all being kept afloat by compelling multiplayer. The word of mouth is great, and people picking up a console will buy them to play with friends.

Front loaded sales. Those massive early sales come at the price of longer legs. As amazing as Horizon is, it is not Uncharted yet and this sort of performance is pretty typical. I think publishers will always take massive first week sales vs longer legs because of modern pricing models. Ideally you want both but if it is one or the other, massive early sales are great for your botttom line.

I get that Persona 5 is supply constrained, but when you see that Zelda is barely in the top 10 anymore, Horizon is long gone... can a single player game even survive in the UK?

I could sell my steelbook that I bought for ÂŁ42 for about ÂŁ100 right now if I wanted. That's how bad the stock situation is for Persona 5.

Haven't even unwrapped my Take Your Heart edition yet.

Isn't Zelda supply constrained as well? Or at least the Switch? It seems to be selling very consistently.

Zelda has been selling the exact same amount since it's second week, so I don't think that is a very good example. And besides, sales for those titles are very strong regardless of whether they are still in the top 10 after 6 weeks.

Zelda is also supply constrained by the Switch itself though. Horizon is kinda "old" by now it's not that surprising either

Well, apparently Switch is still supply constrained, so Zelda only sells whatever amount of Switches are available. This weeks' news even says Zelda sells the same amount of copies each week.

Do we have any guesstimate at zelda's second week sales? And thus a ballpark guesstimate at switch sales

It's just crazy to compare the Top 10 in the UK and the Top 5 in France. I guess the two countries are really far apart when it comes to video games.

Horizon has / had exactly the legs it deserved, imho. Neither its platform, nor its stock was supply constrained, so sales were incredibly front loaded.

it's a fantastic game, with a great single player campaign, but not as much of a 'cultural phenomenon' as Zelda, GTA or similar games.

There's no "emergent" gameplay whatsoever. No multiplayer.

Not in the individual charts it was still number 5.
Yeah but individual charts aren't up yet so change there's isn't know.

It's obviously sold fine anyway. Most titles remain front loaded particularly SP games. It's already delivered very good sales. Now it's just a steady drip of low level sales. You'll see spikes for the game when price drops or its bundled or both.

There's no need to worry about the game's performance it's been very good for a new IP this gen. WoM and critical consensus is very positive too. A strong sequel should see even larger sales and GG will have a very strong new franchise to pursue.

Spain is Nintendo and Sony land since forever.

Nah, Spain is Sony land.

Probably the only target which plays more Nintendo titles than Sony must be kids between 3-8 years.

I think Nintendo Spain have a good target between teen girls too, but i'm not sure.

Yeah it should be at 200k by now I think.

The issue is we don't know how much BOTW sold in its first week. I have all the evidence I need to give a number except that one crucial data point.

Thankfully, it's also the easiest number to give a rough estimate for. I will give an estimate based on a 90% attach rate here (which is my guess, based on Gamesindustry.biz saying Zelda had a large attach rate and the general first week attach rates we do know for other Western countries; at the very least it is much bigger than 75%, since we know Zelda on Switch was 75% of total retail Switch software sales in that first week):

0.90 * 80000 = 72000 copies of Breath of the Wild on Switch first week.
Zelda Switch : Zelda Wii U = 0.78 : 0.22 => total Zelda sales = 72000/0.78 = 92308.
Second week drop = -70% => total Zelda sales second week = 92308 * 0.30 = 27692 copies.
Second week: Zelda Switch : Zelda Wii U = 0.60 : 0.40 => Zelda Switch second week = 27692 * 0.60 = 16,615 copies.

So, it seems likely Zelda has sold at least 16,600 copies every week since the second week, which means Switch has sold at least that as well. So, that means 6 weeks of selling 16,600 plus 1 week of selling 80,000 puts the Switch at around 180,000 units sold already.

Evidence:

- Platform Split First Week:
GFK said:
Released on Friday, Nintendo Switch brings with it ‘The Legend of Zelda: The Breath of the Wild', which debuts at No2 for both Switch and Wii U. 78% of sales were for the Switch version with 22% for Wii U.

- First Week Switch unit sales:
Gamesindustry.biz said:
Speaking to retailers this morning, Nintendo Switch has sold around 80,000 units in the UK during its opening weekend.

- Second Week Drop for Zelda Total:
MCV UK said:
Last week's chart-topper, Horizon: Zero Dawn, drops to second spot after a 60 per cent sales decline. Debuting behind it at No.3 is Warner Bros' budget priced LEGO Worlds, which sits one place above The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Nintendo's title slips from second to fourth after a 70 per cent week-on-week sales drop.

- Second Week Platform Split:
Videogamer.com said:
Interestingly the Zelda sales split was much closer on week two, with 60 per cent coming on Switch and 40 per cent on Wii U.

Edit: the real situation must be a bit more complicated, since we know first month sales for the Switch in terms of software were 137k. Some potential reasons I can think of are listed below:
That does complicate things indeed. It can mean several things:

- The Switch had a <1 attach rate for physical software at launch, since even using Zelds Switch at 60k means that the extrapolated minimum March sales (i.e. launch week + 4 weeks of second week sales) reach 135k, which is way too close to the 137k in the thread you mention for comfort.

- Switch attach rate dropped before 1 after the launch week, meaning that digital software sales were relatively large, perhaps due to Zelda physical copy shortages? Don't know if that was a thing tbh, probably not.

- Gamesindustry heard wrong, and Zelda's week two sales were not continued steadily from the second week until now.

Edit 2: So, I did some more digging, and I found the following:
So about 85,000 units for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.
And:
gamesindustry.biz said:
There's no hiding what game did the business for Switch. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was this week's second-best selling boxed game, with a large proportion of Switch owners picking up a copy of the title (plus a decent number of Wii U owners, too). It is the third-biggest launch for a video game this year, ahead of For Honor but behind Resident Evil 7.
So, BOTW did less than 85k combined, or less than 66.3k on Switch. The new maximum from this would be 172k, though it can go lower since we have no lower bound yet.

Such a shame to see the worst AAA game of the year continually top the chart. At least other European countries have better taste.

A few of the comments in here would lead you to believe Horizon only just came out. It's been on the market for a month and a half and is a single player only new IP.
