Tekken GAF: Train me for a Tekken 7 tournament this weekend.

So I have easy access to a PS3 with Tekken Tag 2.
The event itself is part of Bands Namcos Tekken 7 UK and Ireland tour and will use whatever build was at hype spotting.

Practice time with actual tekken 7 will be minimal and some Irish players were at hypespotting last weekend and placed well.

On the plus side as it's a free promo tournament the bracket is stuffed with unknowns and hopefully I'll be seeded away from the killers at least a bit. Maybe.

In TTT2 I mained Armor King and Howarang. Might have a little muscle memory. But ultimately I'm a Street fighter player. Maybe played a little Anna and Nina.

Advice on the basics, meta, neutral costumes whatever appreciated

If you have a softmodded PSP, some super fans modded Tekken 6 to give characters Tekken 7 move properties. I would think that would be better prep than TTT2, no?

Hwoarang is strong in T7 so he'd be fine to stick with. What's your current level, OP?

For Hwoarang, do you know his solo combos, his punishes, his good moves, how to structure offense?

Edit: If not, do your research on those. Tekkenzaibatsu is a decent place to start, and there's the thing Doomshine linked, and this.

If you do, just check on his changes for T7. He has some powerful new tools. Greentekken is a good place to look for high level players of your character.

If you don't mind watching some videos, there's plenty of resources:

Armor King is not in Tekken 7, but King is really good and pretty easy to use so you could try him. He got some of Armor King's good moves and it makes him very well-rounded.

Looking up high level Korean or Japanese play of your character is a pretty good way to see how they should be played and what the combos are.

Yup, Doomshine knows what's up. There are a lot of people who have been playing T7 for some time now and YouTube is full of videos that could help you out.

Hwoarang is a strong mix-up character and he's really good in T7. If you want to main him, work on your offense and try to find that sweet spot between being defensive and going in hard (really hard).
He got some of Beak's moves in T7, but you can still practice with him in TTT2. If you have the modded T6 PSP version you can practice his new combos and other stuff.

Learn Hwoarang. If you're decent with Hwoarang you can stomp on most low level players as they have trouble with all of the strings and mixups.

When it comes to videos explaining the fundamental concept of Tekken this one is best articulated IMO:

Start small and work your way up gradually building your toolset. Also, Hwoarang is a fairly complex character to gain an initial control over. It took a VERY long time for me to learn how to use the character. So be prepared to put in the hours.

Main thing is to have fun along the journey and to not look at depleting your opponent's life bar as a victory but simply executing a strategy successfully despite losing as a victory. With that mentality you can still have fun while legitimately amplifying your skill level.

You're also in luck being in Europe. Euro Tekken GAF are the nicest gentleman on this forum and always give time to one another.

Watch videos.

Tekken requires demonstration.Very difficult to describe without seeing what's going on.

This is a good recommendation.

Aris has so many ''enemigo'' tutorial that familiarizes you with the game's ins and outs in a very logical way.(as well some character specifics)

I would also recommend LevelUpYourGame series. Its a little dated because its tekken 6 ,but the fundamentals are really largely the same. They taught me Tekken.

Cheers guys, gonna look awesome of this in work tomorrow, get some casuals in the flat tomorrow in TTT2, some offline casuals on Wednesday if I can sneak it. And prep for Friday.

I will destroy Fergus. By buying him pints.

Thanks for the links, went 0-26 last trip to the game center here in my attempt to learn both Tekken and Nina...

Went back to Steve to make it 3 - 30 lol.
