More screens at the above links. A new video will be shown this weekend at the TOKYO AUTO SALON 2007 but there will be no playable demo :-/
Supposedly the PS3 and PSP version will connect somehow. No news updated news on the PSP version. Looks like Genki will be using the Porsche 911 version of Shima's Blackbird instead of Nissan 350Z Blackbird that was in Maximum Tune. Confirmed cars so far are:

-Akio's S30Z :D
-Reina's R32
-Shima's 911 Blackbird
-Masaki's FD3S
-Yamanaka's R33

*Crosses fingers that Yuzo Koshiro will be in charge of the soundtrack again like in the past 3 titles*

It's the Namco(?) ripoff that was in arcades and I think got a PS2 release.
Except it came from the manga series, and is more about expressway racing and less about ZOMG DRIFT!

Who gives a **** about the game. Will Yuzo Koshiro be providing another rocking techno soundtrack!?!?!?!?

Is this like Initial D?
Wangan Midnight like Initial D are both based off Manga series but Initial D is the only one to get an animated show (unless you count the PS2 intro of Wangan Midnight). Both are racing games but with Wangan Midnight more on highway racing and Initial D focusing more on touge racing. Genki or Namco could have ported the arcade version of Maximum Tune which is running on Renderware and Chihiro based (looks like a PS2 game) to the PS3 and I would still be estatic.

Initial D is about mountain racing/drifting. Wangan is apparently a big long straight highway in Japan, and racing on it is all about speed.

No front and back tires riding on two sides of the same gutter? No bumper brushing against guard rails? Is it more like Ridge Racer?

I played Maximum Tune 2 a lot at this one arcade and really enjoyed it, so im still somewhat excited about this, but is this based off the arcade versions or is this brand new? also I know that Maximum tune 1 was put on the PS2, im not sure about 2 tho...

and which came first, the Maximum Tune games or the Tokyo Xtreme Racer games? I heard before that the TXR games were based on Wangan Midnight.

Wangan Midnight (Genki Arcade/PS2 version) was based off of TXR. Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 1&2 was developed by Namco and changes the formula that the first Wangan Midnight game had with much success to compete against Sega's Initial D. Both Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune games were never ported to the PS2 nor XBOX (since both Maximum Tune Arcades are XBOX-Chihiro based). The Genki Wangan Midnight arcade was ported to the PS2 back in 2002. Its not a bad game mind you (TXR based), but the Maximum Tune games by Namco are much much better.

thats makes sense then, didnt know Genki made the PS2 one.

This resemble Shutoko Battle(Tokyo Extreme Racing) a lot. Is there anything in common between them? Is Genki doing it?

EDIT: Look like it is, this game will rock, no question at al.

Those "highway battle" games always look fun IMO but none of them are worth shit. :lol In a perfect world, it would be done by Criterion and Polyphony.

I want to know too. I love using the Wangan Midnight soundtracks as custom soundtracks for other racing games

I officially love you guys for telling me about this soundtrack. I love Yuzo Koshiro and I didn't know he did this one. Now I have music to drive really fast to. :) (and get stupid speeding tickets)

Don't forget Eurobeat! Initial D wouldn't be nearly as popular without the hot-blooded Eurobeat Soundtrack

"Runnin' in the Ninnetieees!"

I wasn't impressed with the original's soundtrack (not Koshiro, I'm guessing), but the two discs of Yuzo love from Maximum Tune (I think) are SIIIIIIIIIIIIICK!

I love Maximum Tune, the games and the soundtracks...I was hoping the PS3 version would be based off that, but it doesn't seem that way. Still interested!

The original one is actually also by Koshiro, definitely not the same style though.

Oh shit. My tags confirm it. Oh well, he can't be sick-awesome all the time. (Streets of Rage 3 says 'hiya!')

Don't forget that the official JP Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 2 site has the exclusive arcade Stream Of Tears(more tranced mix) track that was not included on the official soundtrack cd!

Got that along with the soundtrack. Good thing they put that up there, since it was in the game but not on the soundtrack.

Thanks! That's the only song I'm missing if I have the official soundtrack (2 discs)?
Well, the soundtrack is missing the Opening Theme from Maximum Tune 1 but not even the website hosts this. I would love it if someone recorded this in high quality. The track, This Is My Destiny, from Maximum Tune 2 starts off different in the Arcade than from the soundtrack version (Arcade version starts off at the 0:19 mark without lyrics).

The arcade port of Wangan Midnight for PS2 actually has an exclusive intro that was not on the original soundtrack/arcades as well and is the only music track to not be composed by Yuzo Koshiro. The PS2 had the opening track "Hit It!" by Daiki Kasho, lyrics by Alan Brey (you might recognize this name from a number of videogame soundtracks) which sounds awesome too (I ripped my own version of this).

I need a new TXR dammit! The 360 didn't have enough new roadyway AND it actually had old roadway removed that was in the previous PS2 versions WTF

Willing to share? :) daiki kasho is back on GT HD, btw.

Interesting. How would you compare the car handling and physics compared to the RR series?

defensor what will the online features be like? Also do the physics resemble RR?

Still gotta play RR6 and RR7 first before I play this though...

If the game looked as solid as these images I would be more than happy.

Sadly, the final game is going to look more jaggy and "dirty" IMO We are talking about a series that were average looking in ps2...

those shots aren't even anything special, why wouldn't the game be able to look like that. PS2 was a different story, everyone knew it was the weakest of the bunch, and many games were fugly.

Well, Shutokou Battle 360 was a piece of junk, technically. It looked quite a bit worse than this while running at 30 fps.

If this game ends up looking as clean as those shots while running at 60 fps, I'd say the visuals are quite nice. Nothing incredible, but very appealing.

Don't forget the PSP version, which struggled to average at 15-20 fps. Hopefully Genki's putting a bit more effort into the Wangans.

No it didn't. The PSP game ran at a solid 30 fps...it just sucked. Bad.

Really... I thought the erratic sub-30fps was one of the chief complaints? Darien (Mr. TXR) and Lyte (<3's even Tenchu PSP) both specifically wailed on it iirc.

If not the visuals and framerate, what was wrong with the conversion then?

The typical TXR gameplay is just gone.

Basically, the game is a collection of loadscreens and menus with short battles in between. Rather than driving around looking for someone to race, you select them from a menu. So, basically, you do everything from a menu system and each menu is divided by a load screen. It's very poorly designed.

It looks fine (like TXR on PS2, really) and plays decently, but there is no traffic and the races are short and boring. It was a complete mess of a game and I'm glad I did not purchase it (I played a copy of the game in store for a bit).

It's not Initial D but a rip-off? ugh, they could have least changed the pitiful character art into something better. :(

Game looks solid, but nothing special.

its not Initial D or a rip-off, its another car manga that has a totally different style of racing in it
