What does it play like?
Like a certain multiplayer game, you gain territorial advantage in the form of a speed increase while on your own color, and you use this advantage to gain even more territory and to assist in knocking out other players. You gain territory in a cross shape (diagonal with a specific powerup), with your blast radius and speed getting better with each respective powerup. Keep in mind you lose your powerups if you die.

Panel Battle: Most territory at the end of the game wins.
Knockout Battle: Winner = Kills - Deaths
Life Battle: Play until you run out of lives. Last person standing is the winner.

FAQ:
HD Rumble?
Supported. There is also a rumble sensitivity bar in the settings.
Miis?
Not present. Some early videos of the game use them, but they are not supported. This could be temporary, but isn't guaranteed to come.
Future Support?
As of Version 1.2 (US) there is no indication that the game will be supported further.
How Many Maps are there?
There are 4 themes, each with its own music, background, and themed gimmick (or in the case of green field, a lack thereof). Each theme has 5 different maps, 3 of which have player-activated gimmicks. In all, there are 20 different layouts (even though they share the same map name, maps with different themes will have a different layout).
Are those the suits from Federation Force?
Get your eyes checked.
Wasn't this a Mario Party Minigame?
Just get out.

Any reviews?

There are a handful. It's not super great.
Metacritic gives it only a 57 from about 15 reviews, but I'm a little hesitant to attach them because the game has been updated since, and I'm not familiar enough with what's been released since the reviews and what was in the game when it launched in Europe.

I think people are sleeping on the soundtrack though. Even the menus have a very nice ambience to them.

Online is definitely a problem. I got the game now because I wanted to play in it before it died forever, but I overestimated how active it would be the first week (I had considerably better luck getting people in Federation Force, for comparison).

Doubt the scores would change much after those updates

I wonder how far into development they realised just how boring the concept actually is, but it was then too late to turn back.

I could name about 15 Switch multiplayer games off the top of my head that are more fun to play.

The concept is fine.

This reads like you played it. Did you?

Bought it day one in Europe. I buy pretty much all local multiplayer games. It gets boring quite quickly.

Fair enough. I still think you're wrong on that the concept is boring: I think there are legitimate complaints to be made regarding execution (regarding amount of content and input controls), but the core concept is basically a reverse bomberman where you want to be affecting as much as you can.

Announced in the direct that a 4th stage to finish out the 4 colors will be added in the same update that brings local play (as was quite obvious for a Red stage, it's lava based).

Also a new gimmick layout (presumably for each stage) and a new "Class Mode" for online, but I have no idea what it does besides doing something with rankings, so it may just be an actual ranked mode instead of "fill as many points as you want".

Version 1.2 was released as of... 2 days ago? Updated the OP a bit.

With a new map and a new theme the total count goes from 4x3=12 to 5x4=20. The red Colosseum is whatever (it does have some of the best layout design but its theme and music aren't really compelling) but the spinner gimmick is REALLY fun.

As I had guessed the new online thing is just ranked.
