After touting this game for weeks, I picked up the game yesterday.
This game is a TON better than the first. There's just so much balance now, and so much more in the game. A Strikers 101 mode (tutorial) can be chosen to help you learn the gist of things, which I suggest everybody do (even pros).
I instantly knew that this game was going to be much more deep and fun than the first when I found out that Monty Mole (!!!) and other sidekicks not only have statistics and certain strengths and weaknesses, but also have special kicks themselves. For instance, a fully-charged shot from Dry Bones can electricute the goalie, making you able to put in the rebound if there's teammates closeby. Hammer Bros.' kick is amazing. If you have the time to pull it off, the Hammer Bro throws his hammers onto the goalie, knocking him down, and then kicks the ball in. If you have time to do this and are at the right place, this should be an instant goal.
But that doesn't make the Hammer Bros. cheap or anything. You can charge up shots to get items now, too. So half the strategy is trying to get an item and then using it at the proper time to allow you to more easily set up for a goal.
Each character has their own special dodge move, too, which you can utilize by using the D-Pad. Monty Mole buries underground and comes back up a second later. If you went to tackle him, you end up not only missing, but getting pummeled on his way up, costing you valuable seconds.
Level-wise, yeah, there's a few that are overly hectic, and then there's a couple that are juuust right. And then there's still graphically updated versions of the original stadiums from the original game, free of gimmicks. The crowd is done much better, if I do say so myself.
The Mega Strikes (can shoot up to six balls at a goalie) usually net a couple in the "Road to Strikers Cup" mode, but a skilled player will rarely let you get this off on time when you're playing online. And it's not hard at all to block incoming shots. I've only let in a couple out of the many that opponents have shot at me.
Also, with the new "charged" ball mechanic, this game really emphasizes strategy. Do you want to pass around the ball, charging it so you have a better shot on goal? Do you want to kick a slightly charged up shot in order to get an item, which you can use to shield yourself so you can use a Mega Strike? Do you want your defense to have more movement or do you want all your support characters to be Hammer Bros. because they're so awesome?
Mario Strikers on GCN was one of the most underrated games last generation, in my opinion. The game just oozed fun and made you forget about all the technical things in games. This game is better in pretty much every aspect... AND it's online.
EDIT: Can we get an OP with a boxart, price, some screenshots, and a link to a couple reviews or something? If somebody wants to do a banner that's fine (I don't know how... sorry).
Actually, I can scrounge up the other things. This game has like five threads about it and none of them are cohesive enough to just talk and appreciate the game.
