Seeing as it's confirmed, it's better to create a new thread instead of digging through that 4k thread of speculation.

Bungie Weekly Update said:
As you have no doubt read on the web today, Microsoft Corp. and Bungie Studios, have reached an unprecedented and exciting agreement – starting immediately, Bungie will become an independent company and will retain a long-term publishing agreement with Microsoft Game Studios for “Halo” titles. The new structure became effective on Oct. 1, 2007. The official blurb follows, but since you’re a valuable part of our community, we thought we’d sum it up simply and concisely.

Bungie has long been built on creativity, originality and the freedom to pursue ideas. Microsoft agreed, and rather than stifle our imagination, they decided it was in both our best interests to unleash it. We’ll continue to make Xbox 360 games, and we’ll continue to make amazing games for MGS. In that regard, nothing has changed. All that has changed is that now Bungie Studios is once again, the property of the folks of Bungie Studios. Microsoft is and will continue to be, a brilliant, inventive and creatively collaborative publishing partner. Practically speaking, nothing has changed and you guys won’t see much, if any difference, for a while unless you come to work for us, that is – we’re hiring at http://www.bungie.net/inside/jobs.aspx

Bungie founder and partner Jason Jones likened the situation to living the life aquatic. “Working with Microsoft was great for us, it allowed us to grow as a team and make the ambitious, blockbuster games we all wanted to work on. And they will continue to be a great partner. But Bungie is like a shark. We have to keep moving to survive. We have to continually test ourselves, or we might as well be dolphins. Or manatees.”

Official Press Release

REDMOND, Wash. — Oct. 5, 2007 — Microsoft Corp. today announced a plan for Bungie Studios, the developers of the “Halo®” franchise, to embark on a path to become an independent company. Microsoft will retain an equity interest in Bungie, at the same time continuing its long-standing publishing agreement between Microsoft Game Studios and Bungie for the Microsoft-owned “Halo” intellectual property as well as other future properties developed by Bungie.

The critically acclaimed Xbox 360®-exclusive “Halo 3” achieved $300 million in global sales in its first week. Released on Tuesday, Sept. 25, “Halo 3” is the fastest-selling video game ever and already one of the most successful entertainment properties in history.

“Our collaboration with Bungie has resulted in ‘Halo’ becoming an enduring mainstream hit,” said Shane Kim, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios. “While we are supporting Bungie’s desire to return to its independent roots, we will continue to invest in our ‘Halo’ entertainment property with Bungie and other partners, such as Peter Jackson, on a new interactive series set in the ‘Halo’ universe. We look forward to great success with Bungie as our long-term relationship continues to evolve through ‘Halo’-related titles and new IP created by Bungie.”

“This exciting evolution of our relationship with Microsoft will enable us to expand both creatively and organizationally in our mission to create world-class games,” said Harold Ryan, studio head for Bungie. “We will continue to develop with our primary focus on Microsoft® platforms; we greatly value our mutually prosperous relationship with our publisher, Microsoft Game Studios; and we look forward to continuing that affiliation through ‘Halo’ and beyond.”

Bungie Studios will remain in its current location in Kirkland, Wash.

VOOK

We don't know why he keeps buying PAL, either.
Bust up confirmed, just sorta.

So wait they are going to revert to their roots but stay with MS and work on the 360?

Confused.

So it wasn't a complete lie. Bascially MS will be part owner of Bungie, but they can develop for other platforms too?

as i said before, this is far better than key people leaving and "bungie" staying in name only as microsoft developer. I always thought Bungie would want this

Good compromise from some smart people

No more MGS dogs following them around all day with AKs in their backs. More creative freedom, clearly.

Less control from MS on Bungie. It's basially a better creative situation for Bungie.

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Sounds really cool, I'd be interested in seeing a brand new non-Halo franchise from Bungie, Halo 3 is their best game yet...

So I take it this means no Bungie games on competitive platforms for now?

It's basically the best bonus for a game's success ever. Unless this sort of thing has happened before in the industry.

Sounds good to me, more games for everyone, potentially not just XBOX360 owners. Maybe Bungie will finally go back to making decent PC games.
Myth revivial please

Bungie wanted equity interest in the Internet Rumor Mill.

Bungie has more creative freedom and also continues making Halo, Microsoft to continue being their publisher.

All is well in the world.

So basically...Microsoft still gets all of Bungie's games, and the benefits of that while Bungie gets to control what they do. Good deal. In the future from Bungie I think we'll see plenty of Halo 3 DLC, a new IP for the 360, and then maybe a return to the Halo franchise with Microsoft's next console.

Now they can claim that they only make Halo games because that is what they want to do, not because it is the only thing Microsoft will pay them to do.

Works from a marketing standpoint. :)

Chili Con Carnage!
I have two main questions:

1) Who came up with this idea.
2) Will anything actually change.

If the answer to 2 is no then I have a third:

Why?

I think they were serious when they said it's more important to keep tallent together. At least this backs that up.

It's not really a "nice" thing - its a smart business move. What would you want? A pissed off developer, not happy with the way things are and key people leaving ...or a happier, more creatively free developer - that is still basically owned by MS

That was my same thought. Unexpectedly decent for a big corp. like MS to loosen the hold like this.

Yeah, its actually quite... human.

And its an amazing reward for Bungie's success.

It doesnt say:
a) Can they develop whatever they want?
b) Can they develop for other platforms?
c) Does MS still have a % of the company or do they now just have a publishing deal?
