In-game XMB is here (False alarm, Timeshift demo)

Just downloaded and tried the Timeshift online demo, and was extremely happy to see in-game XMB. Sent a coupl messages to some pals from the game, let's hope all future titles follow suit!

If a mediocre game like Timeshift can have in-game XMB, every game should!

blah, sony's sdk has had in-game messaging/music for a while, and it's pretty much up to the developers to include it.

UNEDIT: man, I got confused for a minute there, thought I'd just posted a serious post in what was actually some kind of PS3 troll thread. But after reading the wikipedia page a bit more carefully it seems Timeshift is for PS3 as well as 360, so I'll put my post back again.

So wait, what you're saying is that the game has to support in-game XMB for it to be possible? So basically no game released before now is going to have it unless it gets patched in later somehow? Do PS3 games even have the same kind of ability to be patched as X360 games do?

No idea, all I know is the full XMB Friend List, ability to send messages, chat, etc. is accessible in Timeshift. I assume that the option has been there all along, and devs just haven't been taking advantage of it. :(

wait what? oh and worst title ever.

Ctrl+F "Singstar"... Thread fail

It's in Singstar too, which is a full game. I thought that is what this thread was about in the first place. You are able to access a friends list in that, read messages while in the game and also respond to them.

I was all

:O

and then I was all

afaik every extra feature you implement on PS3 takes more memory out of the game to use. Voicechat, Eyetoy, XMB..

This being used in Timeshift is indeed good news. We've only seen it so far in stuff that doesn't really use much of the PS3 performance, like Singstar and that Japanese Cats game.

It being used in Timeshift probably means they've optimized the memory used by the OS even further.

I'm not sure how it will work. Eye of Judgment had a few patches. However, you had to manually tell it to check for updates.

If some "old" game doesn't have online functionality, I don't know if it can be forced to look for an update.

This is bad, actually. It just confirms it is going to be on a game-by-game basis until Sony forces it into the SDK by lowering memory requirements.

Lots of Offline and Online games had patches already. No worries here.

They said on their blog that they're working hard on bringing it as a firmware feature, I wouldn't worry.

Doko Demo Issyo ( PSN game ) was the first game on PS3 to got in-game messages + in-game custom soundtrack like 6 or 8 months ago and that was before FW2.0 .

PS3 is already capable doing in-game XMB , sad thing it's not Standard but feature that decs can use it it they want .

But even if they release it in some point, every game released to that date would not support it. They can't expect all old games to be patched by developers.

Why would older games need a patch if all you do is press the PS button like you do now to bring up the firmware options?

Yes, this is how it works for PS3. Developers have to choose to allocate additional memory if they want things like the in-game XMB, voice chat, virtual keyboard etc. (some things are ridiculous amounts of memory too - I think it was about 20MB just for the keyboard!)

Whereas on the 360, you just have the standard 32mb (iirc?) and that covers everything.

This is why I've been saying for ages that it needs to be required that all games use it as soon as possible.

Absolutely. Games with patches available will inform you upon booting and promptly download the patch just like 360.

X = Looks like a cross right? Like when you 'cross' something out? Yeah?

Like in SSX.. Snowboard Supercross! SSX looks way better than SSC!

What? You should probably look things up a bit before throwing numbers around ;)

i think sony love to use "X" a lot , they used X for the "Playstation 2 Extreme" they called it PSX and it was first Sony system with the XrossMediaBar (XMB) interface

http://www.innerbits.com/blog/2007/09/13/how-to-address-the-memory-issues-on-the-ps3/

Every PS3 SKU released to this day has a hard drive by default. It is fair to assume that over the PS3’s timeline, it has become a core component of the PS3. Every PS3 has one. You can guarantee a hard drive will be present. So, why not just swap the game’s memory out when the PS3 button is pressed and the XMB is brought up. Swapping out 50-60 MBs of memory should not take long at all. Modern PCs do it all the time.

We don’t have any confirmation that Sony is considering this option, so this is purely speculative. However, our analysis and study of the PS3’s architecture, our discussions with other developers, and the stated goals Sony is trying to achieve all point to this solution.

This solution doesn’t address all the potential problems. Sony would have to minimize the latency of popping up the XMB menu, and returning back to the game. They would have to test extensively to make sure they don’t break games (we know for a fact that currently released titles have had new bugs introduced solely through the release of a system software update).

It does however allow Sony to address both the developer and memory constraints. Let’s see how this issue plays out in the next few months.

There is some speculation.

"Very good, now spell knife"
Now once again, Church, I sounded this motherfucka out. "Nnnn-iiff-ee. N-I-F-E. NIFE"
She said, "No, no, I'm sorry. It's K-N-I-F-E." This bitch is stupid, she really is.
"Uh yes, that would be Ka-nife. Ka-nife." This is what she told me in front of the whole class, she said the 'K' is silent. I said then, "Take that quiet motherfucka out then, cause it's confusing me!"

I'm tempted to DL this just for the software overlay, but I wonder if it's even worth it. If nothing else, I enjoyed the SP demo much more than say, the Blacksite Area 51 demo#2.

But once we get ingame XMB and custom sound tracks standard, what else are we going to bitch about?

The multiplayer demo is fun. Specially the time bubble grenades. Go ahead and download it.
