OK well it's a new year and I guess that means a new thread. I will start things off.

Some shots I took today on the first day of the year.

Let's make joint new year's resolutions to move the fuck away from the places we are in. Because I'm in full agreement here.

Which version do you guys think is the best ?

Top right and bottom left are the best. I'm leaning toward the top right, because the bottom left has a little too much contrast. Tone down the blacks a bit, or increase the contrast just a tad on the top right picture.

I used to be an avid photographer and would take my camera with me everywhere, but this last year I barely even touched it. Until last night, when I got the sudden urge to use it, and now I've been taking shots all day. I also found two rolls of film from earlier this year that I forgot to get developed, so I'm really excited to see how all these will turn out. I'm shooting 3200 film (as are both of those two undeveloped rolls) on a Nikon manual, it's my baby. I also found this awesome zoom lens in a box of stuff the other day that I can't wait to try out. This is going to be the year where I get back into photography and really take it seriously.

Thanks for the comments.

The weather was horrible yesterday. It was freezing and the wind was blowing. I tried to take a few shot to combine later, but because of forces out of my control, it could only line them up so good.

But the end result is not bad. These are my first HDR shots I have done, and I still need to work on my technique. I have go get rid of the light and dark halos around edges. But they are ok for now.

I hope you all had a good new years with lots of photographic chances.

High shutter vomit strobe shots . . . make it happen.

If I'm not mistaken, those are pictures of Nara.

Nara is only pretty in selectively taken (excellently taken, btw)photographs, as the city in general is very unattractive.

edit: oops. Kyoto I believe.

Here's the lovely Kyoto tower. Deliciously anachronistic

Count me in! I've been living in ugly places my entire life.

Yea the shots I posted are from in Kyoto not Nara. Although I do think that Nara also has some very beautiful locations for shooting. But yea, you have to get the right spot.

Here are a few more that I just got around to editing. I hate photobuckets bad jpeg compression.

Budget? $400 at least for a DSLR.

Would you say a DSLR is a good way to start? I'm very much a beginner in photography, but I always take pictures on my average digital camera. It's just something I enjoy doing, but I'm interested in doing it professionally with better results. If that means investing $400+ straight into a DSLR, then I'll get saving :lol.

photography is a lifelong hobby that will pay off in spades when you are old. invest in a DSLR that will give you enough elbow room to grow. in the end its really the lenses that will get you. Go for a good zoom lens if you can but ask yourself what kind of photographer you see yourself as then get the right lens for the job.

I got a D80 for Xmas and a few lenses. One telephoto and one wide angle as well as a regular zoom lens. i'm hoping to pick up a macro lens in the next 2-3 months.

i wish i lived in a more interesting place in this world, concord california sucks for pics.

I'd definitely say an SLR is worth it over any P&S. You won't see much improvement in newer compact cameras just because they all use smaller sensors. You'll appreciate the much greater iso performance, lack of any shutter lag, instant startup, larger buffer for continuous shooting, better AF performance, optical viewfinder, raw file support for more control of your post processing, and of course the support of a plethora of lenses. (at least on the canon, nikon, pentax side)

I love my Canon S3. They're up to S5 now, but the differences aren't too great from what I hear. You can probably get an S3 somewhat cheap now, and it's the closest P&S that you're likely to get to an SLR

Thanks for the advice. Gonna keep track of this thread this year, and hopefully contribute something more towards the end

Anyhow, I gave my dad my 350D and I went on to the 30D. So, why not take some pics? hehe.

Both excellent cameras, highly recommended. (Y)

Very clever lucky forward, love it :)

In the challenge thread there was a few posts about the Canon 50mm 1.8 - I just want to post a link to one of the most useful resources for lens reviews on the web - http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/
It has probably been posted before but it is worth having in every photography thread :)

I bought the Canon 24-105L recently, I'm really impressed so far. The quality is incredible (L series lenses, much love) though I'm still having more fun with my 100mm Macro.

My next purchase is either going to be a new body - probably a 5D, or something I've had my eye on for a while now, the Canon MP-E 65mm - a specialist 5x Macro lens. Has anyone had any experience with this?

On the subject of lenses, I was thinking of upgrading mine this year (I have the stock lens and a cheap telephoto zoom). I shoot on a Canon 300D at the moment. The ones I were looking at were the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM and the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM. I felt like between those two I'd have plenty of coverage in the focal lengths that I want. I shoot mostly candids along with some landscape/architecture pictures. I don't do much close up - macro work at the moment. My concerns are: quality for price and future-proofing (the 10-22mm isn't compatible with all Canon bodies, right?). I plan on sticking with my 300D for at least a few more years, but after that I'll probably pick up a new body that hopefully these lenses will work with. Any thoughts or advice? Thanks!

Your right, EF-S lenses will not work on a full-frame body, such as the 5D. At the moment Canon are still releasing the cropped bodies (300d, 400d, 30d, 40d etc) but I think they may start phasing them out over the next few years. The 10-22 would be a useful lens though, quite expensive but you could sell it on after the three years.

I don't think you'll have problems with the 24-70, looks like a nice piece of kit!

Thanks, PeteJ.

I bought an MP-E 65 last year and I've had a lot of fun with it. Tremendous magnifying capability, but you either need to be on a very steady tripod or use flash if you go handheld (I bought the matching MT-24ex twin-head flash.) Extremely shallow depth-of-field, so I shoot everything at the max of f16.

Here are some shots I took with mine that I've posted here last year:

Thanks for the advice. Are there any nice wide-angle zooms out there that are compatible with full-frame bodies in case I get one sooner or later?

Definitely not. Crop bodies are excellent for sports and wildlife shooters. Two different applications to the bodies and they're here to stay. ;)

Yeah true I suppose. Personally I'd prefer a full frame in any situation but that's because I'm trying to justify a new camera! I don't see why camera makers would continue to make cropped bodies when they are cutting out part of the picture, but I do fully admit to not owning one to see the limitations first hand.

I do however, have a shot of some cake.

I gifted myself a Nikon D40 for Christmas, so I'm trying to get better at photography.

I'm trying to improve my composition and get better at setting exposures.

To any flickr users - I highly recommend the group "Pick your poison - the rules are a little tricky compared to most other groups, but it is worth sticking with. Very addictive. Needs more people to help the challenges move a bit quicker and keep me from doing anything productive at work.

I got a Rebel XTi for christmas so I look forward to participating in upcoming GAF photography threads!

still trying to get the hang of it as I have never had an SLR before.

(I couldn't really frame this, since I was looking down the wrong end of the camera. Click for large, detail is pretty cool)

Bit morbid...sorry!

All taken with the 100mm macro and various extension tubes, manual focused.

Finally got a new digital camera (Canon Digital Rebel XT)! :D

Amazing shots you two. The rebel XT - is that the same as the 400d?
Had to do a double take on the statue shot tf53! Quality.

A monster!
