GAF Photography 2008: Assignment Thread 34 - Creature Comforts

Status
Not open for further replies.
Theme: Creature Comforts

Submissions are due by Sunday, February 17 at 11:59 PM PST.

Voting begins Monday, February 18, 2008 and ends on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 11:59 PM PST.

1) The theme can be interpreted as you see fit, but keep in mind others will be judging based on whatever criteria they see fit.

2) Only one photo per person, per assignment.
-- Photos must be taken during the assignment period.
-- Only photos to be posted in this thread are to be submissions.
-- You can change your submission by editing your post.
-- To avoid cluttering up the thread, please avoid quoting images.
-- Photos should be no larger than 800 pixels on the long edge.

3) One vote for your first choice (3 points) and one vote for your runner-up (1 point), which can be based on any criteria you see fit. You cannot vote for your own submission. Non-participants are also welcome to vote. Criticism/comments encouraged.

4) The "winner" should come up with a new theme/time period. Ties are broken first by the number of first choice votes, then by longest time since last win/thread start, then by longest amount of time participating in assignment threads.

5) The theme permits a very liberal interpretation of the word creature of course. Have fun!

Many apologies for the delay! Had quite a busy day yesterday...hope I have done it appropriately, I'm sure people will let me know if anything is amiss! Many thanks to Squirrel Killer for his handy FAQ. I'm off to sleep now, so I won't be able to view this again for a few hours yet.

Posted again for awesomeness:

Q. I don't have a fancy camera. Can I enter?

A. Of course.

Q. I can't compete with you guys. Why should I enter?

A. You're not going to get any better with your camera in the bag.

Q. My photo sucks. Are you guys going to laugh at me?

A. Almost certainly not. Just look at the comments my entry recieved in the "Food" assignment. If that turd of a photo doesn't break out the LOLs, nothing will.

Q. My photo is kind of a stretch to match the theme. Can I still enter it?

A. Sure, but keep in mind 1) "The theme can be interpreted as you see fit" and that 2) "Others will be judging based on whatever criteria they see fit."

Q. How much post-processing is allowed?

A. There's no restriction on post, but this is a photography assignment, not a Photoshop one. In the past, heavily post-processed entries have gotten votes, but rarely competed for the "win." Again, "Others will be judging based on whatever criteria they see fit."

Q. Oh, I've got this great photo I took last summer that's perfect for this theme. Can I enter that?

A. No, entries need to be taken during the assignment period. Instead, show it off by posting it in the quarterly photo thread.

Q. Why are you guys facists? It's just a photo contest.

A. It's not a contest, it's an assignment to get you to go out and strech your photographic skills.

Q. I'm banned from NeoGAF. Can I enter?

A. As per the moderators, members who are only temporarily banned may enter, just ask someone you know to post your entry and properly credit it. We've even accepted votes by proxy in this way too. Permanently banned members, however, may not enter nor vote.

Q. Where do I upload my entry?

A. This is pretty much up to you, people frequently use a Flickr account, upload their entry to a free photo hosting service such as photobucket.com or tinypic.com, or their own personal web site.

Q. I didn't enter. Can I vote?

A. Absolutely.

Q. How do I vote?

Just post a reply noting your "First choice" and "Runner up","1" and "2", "First" and "Second", "3 points" and "1 point", or anything else that clearly lets whoever tallies the vote know how you want your points distributed. People in the past have voted for only for one entry, leaving the runner up spot blank. Feel free to give honorable mentions or comment on all the entries although neither will effect the vote tally.

Q. I won! Now what?

A. Think up a theme and post a new thread in the Off-Topic Discussion section with a title that follows this format:

GAF Photography 2008: Assignment Thread xx

Feel free to copy and paste this text, replacing the underscored important bits.

Code:
Theme: [b]_theme_[/b]

Submissions are due by [b]_day_of_week_, _month_ _date_ at _time_ _timezone_.[/b]

Voting begins _day_of_week_, _month_ _date_ and ends on _day_of_week_, _month_ _date_ at _time_ _timezone_.

1) The theme can be interpreted as you see fit, but keep in mind others will be judging based on whatever criteria they see fit.

4) The "winner" should come up with a new theme/time period. Ties are broken first by the number of first choice votes, then by longest time since last win/thread start, then by longest amount of time participating in assignment threads.

5) Have fun!

Assignments usually run about a week and a half or so, with two days given for voting. Feel free to play with the 5th rule and insert your own words of encouragement.

Note submission date changed to Sunday Feb 17.

This should be interesting!

SealSqueal, I've mentioned before that having the deadline on a Saturday night might really reduce the number of entries, since a lot of people tend to wait until the last day to get their entry in, and Saturday nights can be busy for most people. In fact, I'm not sure if we've ended one on a Saturday before, but of course, it's your call.

Actually I copied off one that ended on a saturday, but maybe I should change it to Sunday, you are probably right about people being busy.

Edit: Submission date changed. I realise the theme might be a bit difficult, my line of thinking has kinda been either my pets, maybe wildlife or insects, or alternatively what makes me comfortable, or what is the first thing I look to when I'm looking to relax kinda thing. I'm sure some of you will be much more inventive though...

Here's what I have right now, didn't turn out quite like I was hoping. Maybe I'll come up with another later.

Edit: Better resampling and crop.

Is this about the TV show "Creature Comforts" ? Or do you just mean comfortable things ?

I'm sorry, English isn't my first language :).

Heh, I kinda thought that too. But the theme is whatever you want it to be. Just know that others will judge your photo based on their own criteria.

I guess when you think about that show, it was about creatures in their habitat hey, and is kinda what I was aiming at, but as I said you can take it for what you will - just whatever springs to mind for you. The criteria is pretty broad with this one, but good photos will still shine through!

Edit: Although I really liked my previous shot, I'm gonna have to go with this one. That fly has been hanging dead from my ceiling for almost a year now, it's time I got some use of it.

Hehe, I quite like that shot and there is a charm about both entries, which to my mind are both in line with the theme. :D

I still haven't settled on my entry yet...

A for effort, D for spelling. ;) (you have 2 tries left :p)

Edit: Here's mine:

My gf's had the bear since she was one year old. Although she has on a few occasions (while younger, of course) forgot her somewhere, causing discomfort and yelling (they always went back for her :lol ), I think it's been more of a comfort giver.

What the hell, I happened to get one that seemed to me to fit the theme (though not the one I would have taken if I had time to set up), and since all my free time seems to be spent working with photos to send to family....

I'm really liking the entries so far! I haven't decided on one yet though damnit, gonna have a play around tonight me thinks. I wish I had my camera at my cousins house last night, his cats were playing around perfectly for this assignment.

I have 5 different pictures that I really like, and all fit the theme really well. It's hard to decide which one to go with. But I guess the fly picture above is the best one.

Nice...wait, wait, wait...did I miss the boat? CONGRATULATIONS!

Currently, I am overseas. Asians everywhere, I got to see my first asian comic convention, complete with cosplayers, and I saw my first asian twin albinos (I was too polite to snap photos though).

Nah, no boat missage... I didn't like, post a thread or anything. :) He's a week old as of yesterday (Friday), and there's a bajillion pictures on my Flickr, 'cause, well, he's a baby and we must take pictures. But thank you. :D

I think I would have tried to sneak a picture of the albino twins, just because.

the expression on the dogs face, plus the bonios over his feet make it look like he was just laying there and you piled them all over him, and he's thinking 'oh FFS, what now?'

he just doesn't give a shit :)

My own theme and I couldn't think of shit! Not quite true, I just couldn't get a couple of my ideas to work, so this one is a bit of a last minute thing, but fits my own criteria so there it is. :D Quite diverse and competitive, this assignment is.

Creature comforts was a perfect theme for me, because just two weeks ago my university started a trial program for free New York Times, USA Today and Tennessean newspapers. It's so nice to be able to have an hour or so every day dedicated to just sitting back and seeing what's going on in the world with a such an enjoyably tangible medium. I love the smell of it and I love washing the ink off of my fingers afterwards. So nice! I saw this girl in an ad for something in (I think) Monday's NYT, and I just found her to be so incredibly, breathtakingly beautiful, especially in the context of the notoriously cheap paper of a hugely mass-printed daily newspaper. It's always a weird thing when you incorporate another photographer's images into one of yours, but I'm very happy with this picture.

Australian newspapers started that last year, it's great huh! Tried to make me pay this year though damnit. Awesome shot by the way!
