Late to the Pantomime: Sonic next-gen

Urgh. Urgh. Urgh.

So I picked this up out of curiousity, especially after hearing the awesome soundtrack in the Sonic music thread.

I'll cut to the chase: It's shit. It's beyond shit, actually. It's drivel. Mindless drivel.

I loved Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. They were my most played and most loved games last generation. What Sonic next-gen tries to do, is recreate Sonic Adventure 1, but falls flat on its unloved face.

When I heard the idea of having Adventure Fields and Action Stages, I was in heaven. But this game is a mess.

The glimmer of hope I had was the cries of Sonic fans, that the game was rushed, so I thought maybe there was a glimmer of hope, but what this game has told me is that Sonic fans are out of their mind.

All the time in the world would not have corrected the stupid level design, utter tedious Tails side-missions in the middle of Action Stages and the disgusting loading times.

Wave Ocean tries so hard to emulate Emerald Coast, but gets nowhere near.

If you've played the demo, then you've played the best of this game.

Please do not do this to me again, Sega.

God damn. And I thought the demo was a steaming shitpile.

One of the girls at work was moaning to me about this game :-p She's not the biggest gamer, but she knows a glitchy piece of crap when she plays it.

I bought this insult to mankind for like 17 €, and I don't have any kind of interest on keep playing after beating the first stage.

AND I AM A HUGE SONIC NERD

As James Rolfe would say: "What were they thinking!?"

If you think that was awesome, try out Sonic and the Secret Rings if you have a Wii. The soundtrack alone will be stuck in your head for days.

It's so sad, though, to see this game.

Like all 3D Sonic games there are moments where things work right and the game feels fun to play.... it's just those moments are so rare anymore that it's like munching on breadcrumbs when you're starving.

There are parts of this game that make me wish somebody over at Sega or Sonicteam actually gave a shit about what they were making. But they're buried under stiff, over-responsive controls, lukewarm visuals, slowdown, loading times...

And above all, the game just takes itself way too seriously. There's no fun to be had here. It's a midget in a blue hedgehog fur suit crammed in to a plot that feels like a bad Final Fantasy reject.

Can it really be that hard to make a new Sonic? Can it really? I've got an idea for you, Sega: Stop re-treading game mechanics from the nearly-10-years-old Sonic Adventure and start fresh. Totally fresh. A new team, a new take on Sonic, just totally, brand-new everything. And when I say "a new team", I don't mean "switch one group of Sonicteam retards for another group of Sonicteam retards". You've already tried that a couple of times and it doesn't seem to yield better results.

Just... as somebody who remembers the days when Sonic and Mario used to be the pinnacle of quality for the game industry, put Sonic back up there again. Because as it stands Sonic's looking like the next Crash Bandicoot/Spyro the Dragon to most people, and with good reason...

I assume we're talking about the one that appeared on the x360? Have you tried the one on the Wii? That one is supposedly better.

Perhaps they should hand it over to AM2 or AV, Sonic Team is the main reason why Sega "sucked" last gen and in the start of this gen as well. Secret Rings was pretty good but almost ruined by the lame mission objectives and level-up system. It seems to me that SEGA is capable of making great games if they just accept that they can't make Sonic games that last 20 hours with such a short development time.

Instead they should just make 6-8 stages, don't milk them to death with stupid mission objectives and make those the best Sonic stages in history. They need to make sure the replay value is high and once they've nailed the gameplay it's easy to release a sequel with more levels and stages. It seems that they just get cought up in their own mess of sidemissions and lame filler content.

If your looking for a Sonic game I can recommend Sonic Rush, I just got it for my birthday from one of my friends and although I haven't finished it yet it really reminds me of Sonic 2 including the 'drowning sound'. It's like Sonic 2 on steroids.

The previews for the game, AFAIK, were pretty glowing...man what a disappointment it was.

Secret Rings was infinitely better but the level structure was dumb; it should have been a linear level structure like every sonic game.

It took me 10 minutes of playing the demo to realize I didn't want to go anywhere NEAR the full game. Ever.

And I'm as huge a Sonic fanboy as anyone.

Same. I don't think there is a single person, even the biggest Sonic fan, that can justify this game. Well justify it unbiased.

Sonic and the Secret Rings is great though. If they just made it so that, rather then having to make the level up to put you at a good speed, they started you at the good speed and then made it even better it would be my favorite Sonic game.

Man fuck you I paid 60 bucks for this rotten piece of crap. What a waste of money.
I sold it on eBay for like $40. I only lost $20 which isn't too bad. The game is just as bad as Shadow's turd game.

I tried. I tried so damn hard to convince myself that the game was pretty good. I failed. I couldn't even be delusional in the face of of such an abomination.

It shares the same flaws as SA1 (run through the courses exactly how the devs want you to or you glitch out into certain death, retarded story with shitty friends, shit camera, only a few stages worth playing through more than once, etc.), and even improves on some things like the Adventure field camera. But it adds horrible and completely unnecessary load times into the mix which makes it completely unplayable.

People were more forgiving when SA1 first came out (I loved the game). SNG brings the flaws of old into a modern day setting, without nostalgic rose tinted glasses, and got universally dumped on as it rightfully should have and bombed. If anything it sent the right message to Sega that this shit is unacceptable, and we've gotten Sonic RPG from Bioware out of it. Bless this game for that.

Hah hah it's funny. I was looking up reviews on Sonic Next-Gen by people who had given it a high score. They all use the same excuse which is "All the people giving this game a low score are biased." which makes no sense at all.

Why buy a shit game hoping somehow it's not going to be shit? I don't get the whole "maybe it's not THAT bad, if this Sonic game isn't complete shit then it's all worth it" mentality.

Is this better or worse of "Shadow the Hedgehog" for the Gamecube?
Because i enjoyed playing Shadow. yeah, i fucking DID. SO WHAT?!

"Oh no, it's bad. It's REEEEEAAAL bad...."

Hmmm....that's like saying "who's worse, Bush or Cheney?"

Actually, this game would be more like Hitler

In comparison to Shadow, I'd say this game has higher highs with much lower lows. The themes are not as insulting, but the problems are pretty terrible.

Sonic 06 is actually reasonably fun at certain points in the game. However, those points are divided by some of the worst shit I've seen (that snowboarding section, for instance) in years along with the worst loading times this gen. When it is at its best, it's better than anything in Shadow, but those moments are too few and far between.

Shadow is a more consistent game overall. Shadow is never a great game, but it is generally competent enough. The level design was often a bit weak (though there were a ton of them), the controls needed work, and the themes were terrible, but it still had some decent gameplay at times.

Yep, exactly what i think about Shadow.
And about Sonic 2k6, well, i think i'll never play it.

I hope whoever decided to stick all of Sonic's attacks on to X has been fired.

Try jumping off one of those rope jumps to follow a line of rings. OH SHIT, WAIT! When you jump, X is for the bounce attack.

What a clusterfuck this game is. :lol

Why am I even playing it anymore?

Well, some of the platforming levels (past the snowboarding garbage) are actually decent.

You know, i actually lost a 10-€-Brand-new auction on eBay for this game.
I don't know if i should be sad or happy for this.

Sonic's been dead for a long time. He tried to resurrect himself, but while crawling out of his grave he bonked his head on this game's box and died again. Sad.
