So my dear GAF buddies... the thread title says it all. I am in the mood for some anime based on wars... be it fantasy, real, anything counts as long as its good. Preferably something recent, but I doubt there is.... in my time looking for such anime I have found none =(.

Wow those are all quite old :lol . I've watched Grave of the Fireflies... very deep and emotional stuff. I am actually looking for fights and battles and stuff like that. Don't know... just feel in the mood of seeing things explode =S

I remember when I was young and living in Jordan, I used to watch a war anime about some female general in old war times. She had on a uniform that looked European, possibly French. It was a great one, wish I could remember the name.

MS Gundam: 8th MS Team 12 episode OAV

Not a movie but has high-quality animation and excellent character designs. More realistic than some of the other Gundam crap. Has a more gritty war atmosphere. I'm not a Gundam fan and I recommend this.

errr... Pom Poko

About a war between tanuki's and humans. Probably not what you are looking for.

Die Buster 6 episode OAV

Another one that isn't a movie, but still has top notch animation and character designs and machine designs. It's the sequel to the Gunbuster series. Involves a space war with alien things (sort of).

War is kind of vague. You may want to be more specific.

edit:

I don't know why I was thinking you wanted movies. Since that's not a limitation try Toward the Terra.

Universal Century Gundam (0079, Zeta, War in a Pocket, etc.. )

Now and Then, Here and There is great too but not exactly lighthearted

Digital up there hit the nail, definitely marked it on the list. Pom Poko sounds awfully stupid.... so I will consider watching it :lol . Diebuster seems pretty cool too =O

Pailsen Files is an OAV that started last year. 5/12 eps have been subbed so far.

Basilisk

About a war between Iga and Koga ninjas. Mostly good character designs. It does, unfortunately include some ninjas with really stupid/lame techniques or designs, but the overall aesthetic is great. Well above average animation for a series.

Not Pumpkin Scissors, that show is a weird disappointment. I don't even think it's being completed for the U.S. either.

Wow. Nobody mentioned JIN-ROH. Dissappointed in you guys.

That was based on what happens after a war. Macross Plus does not really fit the bill either as it does take place while a war is going on, but does not focus on the war.

I just wanted to promote Macross Plus as I just picked up the collection after a long drive to Frys.

Fine.

How about these then.

The Cockpit - Slipstream, Sonicboom Squadron and Knight of the Iron Dragon.

Flag
Now and Then...
Last Exile

I only watched a couple episodes of Flag so I'm not sure how it finished up.

Hmm... do I need to watch the earlier series to enjoy it? =P
No.

It's actually a prequel.

The older series is better, though, just watched it last year and I prefer it to any Gundam series.

Zipang: Modern Japanese battleship is sent back in time to WWII and crew must find a way home but are drawn into the war and must make a choice of trying to keep history the way it is or defending their home country with their powerful battleship and change history.

Gundam 08th MS team: Follows the exploits of the 08th MS team on the federation. Very realistic depiction of gundams. There aren't any new types or Aces so to speak and just deals with the soldiers on the front lines of the one year war.

Jin-Roh: Movie set in a alternate history Japan in the 1950's that follows a Special forces soldier Named Kazuki Fuse. After witnessing the suicide bombing of a terrorist girl, Fuse becomes haunted by her image, and is forced to undergo retraining for his position in the Capital Police's Special Unit. However, unknown to him, he becomes a key player in a dispute between Capital and Local Police forces, as he finds himself increasingly involved with the sister of the very girl he saw die.

Jin-Roh the wolf brigade

It's not entirely war-centric, but it takes place in an alternate history war setting

Damn, some awesome suggestions here. Already watched Basilisk and FMP though. Jin Roh sounds cool, and so many people are suggestion Now and Then that I am gonna get it :D

Don't watch Berserk unless you want to go crazy at the end. It's great, but you'll want to kill yourself when it just leaves you hanging. I mean, I like it, but the manga is infinitely better, and gets my vote for best manga series ever.

Also in for Last Exile. I saw other people vote for it, so I'll add another on top of that. It's really worth watching.

Also, Escaflowne? I mean, I think everyone has seen that by now, but it's a classic, and it's good.

LEGEND OF THE GALATIC HEROES

/thread

Exactly what it sounds like. A huge war epic in space with great people on both sides. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

On Gundam, do give 0080 a quick look. It may seem whimsical at first, but it's a very good quick snippet of Gundam. As for the original Mobile Suit Gundam, the animation is dated and hasn't aged well (many would argue that's one of its charms), but you should check it out anyway. For what it is, it's a very good show on war, arguably ahead of its time.
