Just to name something not yet mentioned...

Crest of the Stars
Banner of the Stars I, II, and III
You're full of win, even thought Banner of the Stars II was kinda boring. How is III? That's really shot, right?

III was great, but it could've been so much more. condensing a 300 page book into a 50 minute OVA FTL.

I hope they adapt the 4th book into a anime someday, or at least translate the books in english..

Anyway as someone said in this thread - legend of galactic heroes, you wont find a better anime on warfare and tactics. (it's also the best anime ever!)

Jin-roh was pretty damn good too, and you cant go wrong with the UC gundam saga eg 079 zeta & chars counterattack.

Don't watch Berserk unless you want to go crazy at the end. It's great, but you'll want to kill yourself when it just leaves you hanging. I mean, I like it, but the manga is infinitely better, and gets my vote for best manga series ever.

Ugh. I'm halfway through Berserk and completely into it. I wish I had known this before I started watching.
Can I at least pick up the manga to get a proper ending or does the storyline end up deviating? If it does I guess I'll just cut my losses when the next "filler" ep comes up ...

The end of Claymore completely ruined the anime for me. I really hate shitty endings.

The only problem with Berserk are the slow chapter releases. That and it seems the story will never end.

One of the rare genuinely good original thing ever released by Gonzo.
Anyway, my vote goes to Now & Then, Here and There like many here, even though it's not really about the actual war, but mainly about its consequences. Great series with excellent music. The character design could turn off people though :(
True war (in space, but still) would be Banner of the Stars I and II indeed, the first series was more an adventure during a war than them being actually involved in it.

Gasaraki, while it has mecha's, was the most 'war-ish' anime I've seen. Pretty good series, too.

edit: and not even suggested once. tsk tsk.

Last Exile is good =O. But Gonzo loves to screw things down the road =P. So many suggestions, I might have an overload :lol

Zipang is cool so watch it.

Wikipedia:
The newest, most modern warship in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, the guided missile destroyer Mirai sets sail from Japan on a training exercise with the U.S. Navy. Enroute, they encounter a strange meteorological anomaly. The Mirai loses contact with her sister ships but finds herself sailing by the unmistakable shape of the battleship Yamato.

The Mirai eludes the Imperial Japanese fleet and, reluctantly, the crew realizes that they have traveled sixty years into their past to the early days of World War II. Their first desire is to return home, and to insure that they have a home to which to return they decide to do nothing that will change history. That good intention does not last long, however, and gradually they are drawn into the conflict, though they continue to refuse to choose one side over another. The struggle of the crew from a modern, peaceful, and wealthy Japan to resist the nationalistic appeal of defending their country, knowing that in this time it is ruled by a brutal, totalitarian and militaristic government is the central theme of Zipang.

GUNBUSTER <-(AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME x 999999999999999999)

Gundam 0083: Stardust Memories
Gundam 8th MS Team
Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket

Macross: Do You Remember Love?

PS: Gundam, Z Gundam and Turn A are 100% awesome as well, but they're pretty long so you need to put some dedication into them.

Every last one of you needs a good punch in the back of the head for not mentioning Irresponsible Captain Tylor.

I think Now and Then, Here and There was a great dramatic war series.

Gundam (first series)

I was sure that I'd be the one to bring up Gasaraki before anyone else. Good job.

Last Exile is a no-brainer.

If I know what you're referring to, it was never even confirmed that it happened.

The end of thread has arrived

Code Geass of course I've watched. Man... Galactic Heroes is 110 fucking OVAS! WTF?!?!?! It's not even licensed :lol So many suggestions, so little time =/

Last Exile had great presentation.... but the plot and story was way too random. I had no idea wtf was going on in the last 2 episodes.

But yeah, i don't know much about war anime. But if you're in the mood for something eastern and you don't mind live action, do check out Taegugki. It's a Korean war film.... and It's one of my favorites.

Area 88 OAV series. Just finished it tonight and its surely one of the best short series I've ever seen. It came out around 85 and has some beautiful animation.
