New Left 4 Dead gameplay videos + release date revealed

Cool, fall is again going to be a great time of year for gaming. I didn't think last year could be replicated but it's starting to look that way again.

Too far away..

Is there going to be a single player campaign for Left 4 Dead or is it all co-op?
Yeah, you can play single and the AI will just fill in the remaining spots.

Same with any other player amount combo.

Co-op/team based play aside, I seriously don't get the hype for this game. All the videos look like your standard generic zombie FPS with average looking graphics (Source engine without the awesome art of Half Life). What's all the excitement about? Is it just because Valve are publishing it? Or am I totally missing something obvious here?

I hope they do a beta, it seems to be in an almost finished state. It's as if they're just playtesting, tweaking until the big Holiday release period.

Pre-load/order day 1.

I like how you're setting aside the biggest selling point of the game. Brilliant.

I'm also wondering how many zombie FPSs there are for one to be generic.

A big factor for me.

For me the interesting thing is that none of the scenarios are scripted. As in, play it once, and you know that zombie creature A jumps out at point B every time. The encounters are supposedly all random.

That, the co-op element, and the fact that you can also play as a terrifying zombie are all interesting to me.

Co-op team play versus zombies is pretty much it. Then add randomized AI placement and objective locations so the game is different everytime you play it. Then add the ability for players to become infected themselves which will now turn them against the rest of the group and give them the goal of killing off their former friends.

People <3'd this game way before Valve picked it up.

Thank you for not hating the 360 Valve!
You do know that it was already "on" 360 and Valve picking up the publishing rights is something relatively recent, right?

The game has to be good for that 'biggest selling point' to matter though. I wouldn't want to co-op play a turd. (Not saying that L4D will be a turd, but just that this can't be the main factor).

As for zombie FPS, it just looks like your typical Condemned type affair to me. And not dissimilar to the mutants in Half Life.

It's just that while I appreciate that Valve wouldn't have picked this one up for no reason, at the same time I've seen nothing that's stood out to me at all. I was just hoping that someone would point out some hidden awesomeness to change my mind.

But it looks good.

So what's the problem? Should we suddenly stop being excited for every game ever until the reviews roll in and tell us, "Hey guys, it's okay! This one's a keeper!"

*thumbs up*

You know, to be honest Left 4 Dead can't really be standard zombie fare, because existing zombie fare to this point has been essentially non-existent. Now, there are about 20000 zombie mods for GldSrc/Source engine games, but has anyone really stepped back and made an top-shelf FPS that is straight out of Romero's designs?

No, and that's why Left 4 Dead has so much hype. People want the game that people have been toying with for years fully realised and fleshed (tasty, tasty flesh!) out.

I hope they do a beta, it seems to be in an almost finished state. It's as if they're just playtesting, tweaking until the big Holiday release period.

Pretty sure they are trying to tune it to the point of where it is the hottest multiplayer game going into the 2008 holiday season. Especially on the lucrative 360, where TF2 wasn't received nearly as well as it was on the PC.

The game has been designed for 4 player co-op from the ground up. That IS a main factor.

I'm afraid you'll have to show me any segment from Condemned that looks similar to any of the action in Left 4 Dead (hint: does not exist).

If you think the game looks like a Condemned-type affair I don't think anyone's going to change your mind.

That's wrong, this game has taken elements from 28 days later. The zombies are smarter, can run at you and there are different types which require different strategies to deal with. I'd say 4 player co-op, human infected and the AI are the key gameplay features that will set it apart.

I'm buying it because it's doing something other survival horrors haven't done yet. And I really don't see where you're getting this generic thing from. It's hardly a crowded genre, this game has a great deal of original ideas to set it apart. I think perhaps it'll have a harder time on 360 than PC.

Nice. I might end up renting it though if its 60 bucks. Reminds me a bit of Shadowrun in terms of value. Hopefully they charge 40 or so for the 360 version.

I don't understand how you couldn't be hyped for this game. It looks like such an awesome new take on co-op gameplay, and who hasn't wanted to experience a massive zombie invasion scenario? Throw in the fact its from Valve and its a no brainer.

i still play the very very shitty Land of the Dead: Road to Fiddler's Green on my pc, cause zombie killing co-op is awesome fun.

this game couldn't be worse than that game even if Valve did everything in their power to make it worse... so frankly, i know i'm going to get tonnes and tonnes of play out of this.

can't wait.

No it doesn't.

You're brushing too many games into one game archetype because they're scary/creepy. The mobs of enemies here is something that throws back more to Serious Sam and Painkiller. Only instead of giant empty wastelands of football orcs you have full fledged environments to take advantage of, the possibility of real players on the other end, and better co-operative implementation with the need to share items and really take care of each other.

Man watching these videos is furiously increasing my hunger for Resident Evil 5 and Dead Rising 2.

^ This video is fucking HILARIOUS. Self preservation attempt confirmed? Fucker has a shotgun and doesn't even help his friend fend off against the juggernaut zombie boss thats not even facing him. Instead of runs into the shadows to survive. He is rewarded justly for his betrayal.

That tongue torture vid is great. I liked how at the beginning the player abandoned his team and tried to make it into what seemed like a clear path. Only to be owned in a hurry. :lol

Yeah, that's what Im talking about. :lol

I really have no idea what to get system to get this for. I love KB+Mouse controls but have lately been drifting away from PC gaming. This would also probably run better on my 360 then my PC. Or is it no worst then HL2? If not then wont be a problem. Both sound good for different reasons. I'm torn and don't want to by two copies.

pswii60 is such a tool, at least get some valid complaints for the game.

With that aside I blame the 360 for such a long wait for a release date.

it's using the same engine as HL2: Episode 2 from the looks of things, but there's a lot more going on on screen, and from the sounds of things more going on behind the scenes as well.

i would expect this to run worse than episode 2 as a result... but how much worse, we can't know yet.

Oh I know Valve picked up the devs while this was in development, but Orange Box opened up with a trailer for Left 4 Dead on 360. Nothing big, but the follow-through is nice and Valve's PC-Centricity has left me surprised with their support of the 360. I hope it continues...because we can't all afford to upgrade our PC's.

This game is like the perfect zombie scenario for coop I really can't understand the moaning. And yes to the guy who asked if its being made by Valve adds to the hype.

It's basically R6's Terrorist Hunt mode with zombies, boss characters, "randomer" enemy placement, more emphasis on co-op, and (hopefully) improved AI. Managing those spontaneous encounters with three teammates is going to be something special.

Any Valve game should be picked up on the PC. Mods always keep the games new, and Left4Dead won't be different than any other Valve game. People are always getting better and better with Hammer.

Yes, it's really surprising a PC company is "PC-Centric". Who would have guessed they'd keep delivering to their fanbase?

You can't afford to upgrade your PC to play Valve games? Orange Box runs on most PCs going back to 2002. Why oh why do they keep demanding you upgrade?

Well, it's only one guy and he's probably a zombie. So no worries there.

Other than the "reloading.. reloading.." I really like the situation specific character narrative. Pointing out health packs, weapons, bosses in the area etc. Then there's the situations where a character is low on health, like Zoey in one of the vids. She says something like, "I don't think I'm gonna make it." and not five seconds later get tongue lashed and strangled to death. :lol :(
