New Left 4 Dead gameplay videos + release date revealed

It was in various hands-ons. It definitely has the quick voice phrases for the characters, but that doesn't mean it won't have headset/voice as well.

360 version is headset all the way, obviously.

Right, that's fine, and that's what I read as well. The LACK of voice chat altogether was what startled me.

Ahh well, bullet dodged.

I don't know which system I will buy this for. I think I can get my friends to play it on 360 but none of them have decent rigs. PC version will easily be better. I guess I will buy both.

TF2 also has uncontrollable voice commands. ("WE MUST PUSH LEETLE CART!") and tons of prerecorded lines for all voice commands.
It still has voice chat.

I agree and it would be very weird it if didn't support voice chat. I'm just having a hard time finding any hands-on impressions mentioning voice chat while I have found (here) some that mention that voice chat wasn't there and they'd hoped Valve was going to add it before release. Perhaps someone who's gotten a chance to play it can chime in and clear things up.

Well there was also the screen from the lobby system.

(Damn GAF is slooow)

Most of the previews were written based on LAN play, so voice chat wasn't much of a concern because editors were too busy dying and yelling "OH SHIT, WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU?!?!" to each other in person.

The concepts for this game sound great, but anytime I watch video, I come away disappointed. This game moves like an fps from 2004. The people and zombies slide around as the animations attempt to keep up with where the AI is deciding to move.

Also, seeing as this is coming out so close to 2009, I expect better graphics, especially on the PC. This really doesn't look much better than HL2. I appreciate the time Valve takes to develop their games, but the downside is that a lot of things begin to look dated before they even come out.

But yeah, from a developer that made the animation greatness that is TF2, and for a game that is so dependent on atmosphere, the animation here is really killing it for me. Bland.

Wow, they really downgraded the graphics for the X360. Oh and they took out headset support because it's also on consoles.

Thanks a lot.

Just imagine, it will probably even be playable at launch :-(

Split screen for the 360 version? That would make it an insta-buy for me.

In addition to online play featuring four players per team, the Xbox 360 version will include support for two-player splitscreen, a first for any Valve game. And in a rare display, Valve actually offered an official release date for the game: November 4th. Before then, we're expecting to see a new episode on display at this year's E3, so check back then for the latest on the coming zombiepocalypse.

Seems that it does, which is really nice TBH.

Valve called, they needed your credit card number for your inevitable purchase two summers ago.
Not really.

I'm past the point of caring about this game, would have bought it three times over last summer though (literally, 1 for me and 1 for each of my roommates) but now? fuck that shit.

Shadowrun is worth $120.

I loved shadowrun when I rented it, but it would have felt so perfect as a $20 (or $30) downloadable title. MS lost my sale on that one.

Later down the line when I went to pick it up for PC for cheap, it said I needed vista to play it. Thats a second lost sale.

I really wanted to play the game more, but MS made it to difficult for me.

Wait.

Left 4 Dead is going to have matchmaking?

Wat?
Yeah, quite surprising. It sort of makes sense, though. I remember there being a thread about it awhile back.

Aha! Here it is: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=300958

I've never entirely understood this attitude. If a game comes out and is great, you won't buy it on the principle that it didn't come out when you wanted it to? I can't imagine how angry you must be about TF2!

Another mindless FPS! waaaaay to diversify your range of games , Valve.
Are you saying that all FPS games are mindless? I don't want to make that assumption, but that sort of seems to be what you're implying.

Alternate response: Would you prefer they do something that they suck at?

I see where he's coming from on this one. Last summer the hype would have got to me. I'm talking lining up in front of store, setting up a LAN party, the whole thing. Now I'm just going to casually buy it on steam and enjoy it.

I really wish games were held off a bit until they were done.

Not buying it at all though seems foolish.

I dunno, we bitch when we don't hear more about games in development. Personally, I feel that if you buy into the hype, that's your fault.

Last summer called, it wants it's hype back.

Seriously though, Valve can eat a dick.

Still have hype, here. I'm curious as to why the game was delayed for so long. Is it the Player vs Player multiplayer component? I personally don't care for it and I'm sure a lot more people are hyped because of the co-op...

Playtesting, playtesting, playtesting.

Valve didn't even acquire the group behind it until a few months ago....so I'm not sure what you're getting at here. Maybe I'm lost.

So I guess you don't buy any game that has a long hype cycle, such as Metal Gear Solid 4, right?

Oh... oops.

No , i'm implying that this game particularly looks mindless.
and why would they suck at other genres of games , are you implying that they are insecure about their capabilities that they would rather stick with the stale and beaten to death FPS genre?

That seems to be a large factor. The press has never gotten to play as the zombies, and the devs have always talked more about how they're still working on the PvP mode. I don't doubt that they're still tweaking it to perfection, but it does appear that the PvE mode has been essentially finished for quite some time.

How? In what ways?

Beaten to death?

Team Fortress 2, the single best multiplayer game I've EVER PLAYED, is an FPS. Just because there are a lot of shitty FPS doesn't mean the genre is dead. \:

Also, Valve knows how to make a good FPS. Take a look at their history. Do you... not like their games? You can't possibly deny that they're quality experiences.

Your logic astounds me.

Turtle Rock (the dev) has been around for a while and even had valve publish their previous games. Publishing a game =/= owning the dev studio. Now valve does both with em.

As for hype being your own fault (not the person I quoted), I agree. Its why I've been doing media black outs for games these days. Nothing can live up the hype, it's best to have a passing interest only to be floored when you finally play it.

Like SotC.

I'm not seeing the mindlessness. I mean, I can't entirely vouch for it, but the impressions that I've read usually say that if the team isn't working together in some intelligent fashion, they will die.

and why would they suck at other genres of games , are you implying that they are insecure about their capabilities that they would rather stick with the stale and beaten to death FPS genre?
So you were taking a stab at the FPS genre! See, why can't you just come out and say what you mean. I don't see how the FPS genre is stale and beaten to death (see: BioShock, Portal, STALKER, to name a few), and obviously Valve does not either, but I'd be curious to know why you feel that way. I mean, it's fine with me that you do, but it's just a view that I find hard to fathom, somewhat like still believing in the tooth fairy.

Anyway, I think it's just more of a logical decision of sticking to what they're good at. I'm sure if they thought that they could make a great 2D platformer or something (and have it be commercially viable), they would! Still, I don't see Firaxis or Relic (two reasonably successful PC devs) making any FPS games, so why do you think there's a need for diversity in the first place?

You make no sense.

It's not about hype cycle, it's about Valve intentionally sabotaging a release by more than a year just to be able to launch day and date on both platforms so that by the time the game is out, the living situation I was in that would have made for an awesome time last summer has changed to make the purchase not worth it.

But keep trying, it's very cute.

They finished the PC version a year ago, just held on to it until the console one got wrapped up.

I don't think that's even true. I mean, it's obviously using SteamWorks now, so it's been changed since they finished SteamWorks (which was probably not a year ago.)

So you say Valve wanted to release L4D next to the Orange Box?

haters can suck a dick. this game will OWN.

split screen on 360 is pretty damn awesome. ill consider buying it as well as the PC version.

Well fuck. Now I have to decide whether to go pc or get the 360 version for co-op fun. Maybe even both. :/
TF2 has shown that the PC version will always be best. They can't do free content updates and frequent patches on the 360. They could on the PS3 but they hate it and thus won't.
