FMA got pretty intense at times, dude. You aren't really setting the bar low as far as violence goes.

The first Dragon Ball, with kid Goku is still one of the best anime for all ages. And it looks good even if aged.
I agree with this. Fighting shounens have just gotten worse since then.

I would also Recommend Eyeshield 21

yeah it was. But we have watched Naruto with him as well and its just as violent minus the blood. I don't mind that so much, as long as their is no sex, sexual innuendos and that sort of stuff. Thats what I mean.

I watched Naruto at tv for the first time a few days back and dear Lord I never realised how awful the show looked until then.

That was my first thought as well.

Anyway, Naruto and Bleach are good choices and easily accessible. Viz treats Bleach as being for an older audience in the US, but it certainly never gets more intense than FMA.

Which episodes did you see? The first season was actually pretty high quality. It's during the fillers that the quality really drops.

A really early one, where they introduce Kakashi, it looked awful, it reminded me something like out of a Sogna game, only not that bad.

One Piece, Bleach, Naruto and Dragon Ball are all acceptable answers I suppose. If your son enjoyed FMA then I see no reason why he wouldn't be able to enjoy those. However, since these are all pretty long series I'll try my best to suggest a few shorter ones. I'm not a huge anime viewer, but I should be able to think of a few. Let's see...

Fate/stay night - I don't remember this being too violent, and it has quite a bit of action and I enjoyed it a lot.

Shakugan no Shana - Very similar to Fate/stay in a lot of ways (animation, tone, pacing, action sequences) and is also an anime that an adult should be able to enjoy.

s-CRY-ed - Basically a cross between Dragon Ball Z and X-Men. Mutants fighting it out for survival and supremacy, all with unique abilities. The storyline isn't anything to go crazy about, but it's only 26 episodes and is a pretty fun ride from start to finish.

Slayers - This series is just plain old fashion fun, pure and simple. It appeals to just about all audiences, while kids will probably enjoy it more. It has four 26 episode seasons (3 finished and 1 on-going), so if you check it out and end up really getting into it then there's plenty of meat on the plate for both of you.

Shigetsutan Tsukihime - This might be a little dark for your son, but like somebody else said, FMA got pretty dark and violent at times too so it's hard to tell where you've set the bar. It's a good show with some interesting characters and storyline, so if you can I'd suggest giving it a shot.

Trigun - So many people young and old alike really get into this show. You can't go wrong with Trigun.

Chrono Crusade - Has enough action to entertain the kiddies, and is the first anime that brought me to tears.

Azumanga Daioh - I know a few people who say this anime is too cute and stupid to enjoy if you're over the age of 12, but to hell with those guys. Azumanga is hilarious and awesome no matter how old you are, and I'm sure your son will agree, even if he may be too young to get all the jokes.

That's all I've got for right now. I'm sure others will be more helpful.

Definitely One Piece. (Preferably subbed, if dubbed, make sure it's the Funimation version, NOT 4KIDS VERSION!!)

I like the anime in this topic that we're recommending for a five year old.

Most 'otaku' anime would go right over any 5 year old's head. Hell, it goes right over most adult's heads.

I like the person who said 'Future Boy Conan' though. But...it's not available in America. So, that's out, unless you want bootlegs or fansubs.

Not sure if these are dubbed but take a look into...

Scrapped Princess..a bit less action, but probably better for a multi-demographic series.

Star Blazers?

BTW I don't know shit about Anime all I know is I dug the show when I was a kid and still think it's pretty cool today.

My guess is people are just responding to the subject title, not the OP itself. Then again, I wouldn't consider FMA for a 5 year old either.

I hope the people suggesting animes that don't have dubs are joking.
Hey now, some 5 year olds can read well enough if the dialogue isn't too complicated or fast.

You got the best response in the first reply. Your kid will be laughing nonstop during One Piece. You'll laugh too but you will also pick up on some of the less obvious themes. It had a terrible dub, but funimation has since redubbed and rereleased some of it. Dragonball is also a good suggestion.

I think Giant Robo is just about as violent as Naruto, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway it's one of my favorite animes. Superpowers, beefy robots, batshit crazy fighting, full orchestra music, and one of the most badass epic storylines ever animated.

Well, he mentioned Fullmetal Alchemist in his first post, so I just assumed that would be the bar.

PUCCA!

I'm not sure if gaf will allow this to be classified as anime but it seriously rocks.

Neither of the main characters talk, ever (which I like), and Santa does all the odd jobs around town. The action is pretty good too, Garu is a ninja after all. I mean its no S.Cry.Ed (best anime ever btw) but a youngster should enjoy it. Plus the DVDs comes with 12 episodes as opposed to the pathetic 4 or so on a traditional anime DVD

But then again if your watching FMA just move right on up to S.Cry.Ed and save PUCCA for the next kid

Eureka Seven. Less violence than FMA and a GREAT story and cast..

Any Hayao Miyazaki film would be good.

As for series that are good but don't have anything to warp a little 5 year old's mind...

NOTE: There is one random episode parody's Tomb Raider with nudity, but other than that it's fine)

This. This is good for anyone, at any age. I just finished purchasing the series after a 4 year long hiatus, and am now watching it with my sister. Just as good now as it was back then.
