What is it?
This is a direct sequel to Tales of Symphonia in terms of story. It is however a spin-off game with some differences from regular Tales games. There is no world map to navigate and instead of building up a constant party, you capture monsters to fight with you and have cameo characters who fight alongside you at different points of the story. This is the first game in the series to use motion capture for cutscenes.

For a second there we almost had an Official Mario Kart moment. :lol
Yeah. I hit post instead of preview actually. Noticed just before the grace period was up. That's about it for the post though. To be honest, I have such low expectations for this game I don't feel more is worth it. There aren't any reviews yet. I didn't realize it was coming out in less than a week 'til I got an email from Tales Brigade today.

I'm probably going to skip this one. There are just too many negative impressions running around for me to justify dropping $40.

Nah, official thread OP's are getting way too big on GAF anyway, your's is much more condensed and readable.

Yeah, I don't have much hope for this one either, but I'm still interested purely because its TOS, I like the sound of the monster mechanics, and it's like one of the only JRPGs on the damn system. Whether I buy or rent it will pretty much depend on what other GAFers have to say.

Are there supposed to be any improvements in the US version? Or is it the same as the Japanese game?

Well ok. It's about time.

Still haven't finished the first one...sigh.
The first one is awesome. Finish it! Screw the haters.

Anyone here played the Japanese version?
I have a link to the Japanese topic in the OP. I'm getting it purely for the Symphonia story connection. I loved Symphonia so much.

gooood. the official thead is up - that means that the baby is near ; )

I never played the original, and I can't find even a used copy anywhere. I found a new one at some no-name game store, but they're charging... get ready...

$200!!!

Yeah, good luck selling that...

For those who played the Japanese version, will the sequel bring me up to speed since I never played the original, or am I forced to play the original or else I'll be confused as hell?

those of whom have played Tales of Vesperia can you let me know the quality of Dawn of new world?

this game will make or break my second wii purchase..

I sold my first one a week after I bought it....

Yikes. What a dismal OP.
I plan on doing my duty and picking this one up, but I'm not really holding my breath for a stand-out Tales game. Team Symphonia's about the only capable team, at least as far as what's been released here in the West, and they were too busy working on what's probably a much better game, for the 360.

I say probably because though I picked up the LE when it came out, I haven't gotten around to playing it yet. I only recently finished an 80+ hour long Tales of the Abyss adventure, and I still feel a bit burned out.

And, the PSOne version of Tales of Phantasia's probably next up on my list in any event.

Edit - At least this one's going to be pretty cheap. $39.99 is not a bad price for a new RPG. A couple of bucks less if you go the Amazon route.

Day 1. Gonna be an expensive week considering that I plan on getting Fallout 3 PC tomorrow.
my wallet is sad. so very sad.

Not sure I fully understand your question but consensus holds that Vesperia is far far better.

so this one isnt worth the time?

because I am tired of all the casual fans (the ones that just loved Symphonia cause it was on the GC going on about how they cant stop looking forward to this game..

I'm picking this up because the Tales series is the only JRPG series I feel 100% comfortable with. I even liked Legendia. And hey, they discounted it down to $40, so it's not the biggest problem in the world if it's only half good.

Holy Shit. Next Week? Its so sad that there isnt any hype to even let you know the game is coming out.

Im gonna have to Gamefly this baby and buy it from there for $30 bucks.

Yeah I'd avoid it then. This game's biggest draw is being a fanservice spinoff for the fans of Symphonia. Otherwise it doesn't seem to have gotten the same effort as mainline games like Vesperia.

Doesn't sound bad, doesn't sound great.

Curious to see the reaction here.

Apparently from what I read on GameFAQs you get some items for having a ToS save file on your GCN memory card too. It seems to range from some basic items like Gels to monster stuff or whatever.

Oh, pretty cool if true!

FireStorm, where the hell is the huge impressions thread that was around a while back that had mostly positive impressions as far as I read?

Namco Bandai also unexpectedly revealed two new Dawn of the New World additions for the North American market: First, loading GameCube clear data from Symphonia randomly unlocks certain items, in-game currency, and other bonuses at the beginning of the game. Second, the North American release increases the available motion-controlled special-move shortcuts to eight, up from four in the Japanese version.

Nice. Minor improvements/additions are always nice.
Now, I wonder what Scamco Hometek fucked up for the US release.

Nice to know about the save stuff, good thing I still have Symphonia's file.

Firestorm already linked to the only impressions thread we had. You're probably thinking of this thread here that had some impressions since the thread was created around the japanese release time. However not many gaffers seemed to import it since Bebpo was the only person to give a full review while 2 other gaffers gave impressions of the first hour or so. Everyone else was just commenting on youtube videos.

Probably against my better judgment, I'm in. [Edit: Well, that's not entirely fair of me to say... I do want to support Tales in every way I can since there have been so many games that unfortunately never got translated into English--or in the case of PSP Eternia, did get translated but never got released in America--and that's not a fact I like knowing. So I'll be happy to buy at least in one sense, no matter what.]

Just from watching videos and reading up on various factual things that I don't even need to play to know I won't like*, I think I'm pretty much going to be buying a $40 anime. I guess that's not necessarily bad since I've spent a lot more than that on anime before, but with games I want to be buying primarily for the gameplay... :/

*Fixed levels for
the original Symphonia cast members who join
depending on what part of the story you're in. Can't control the monsters. In single-player you can't
play as the original Symphonia cast members
unless you bring up the menu in every battle and manually switch.

Load times before battles--and that's the real big one for me. D: I have an extraordinarily low tolerance for loading times and that brought Abyss down for me quite a bit, but there it only manifested in towns and on the overworld. Battles are my favorite thing about Tales, so having anything getting in the way of that for me might be trouble.

I'll post impressions after I get it... Probably.

But for right now let me just say that I would tell anyone, very literally, that if ToS: DotNW is even half as good as Tales of Vesperia
mazing
, I'll be delighted. (Not exaggerating: ToV's just that amazing, and the last line of the OP is in every way correct!)

Have you seen the intro?

It's instrumental like the original ToS intro, except instead of being different but still good, it's made out of poorly synced ass.

I watched the intro quite some time ago. Unless they changed it, I rather liked the new one.

Amazon has this listed for $36.99. I take it this is a $40 title then. Awesome. :D

Edit- As was stated above. Twice. X&

Going to play the shit out of this. I just need to finish Eternal Sonata on PS3 first.

I splurged and got all the $5-figures of ToS characters two years ago at PAX. Great set. I loved the characters in the first game.

It's disappointing that the voice acting sucks though, from what I hear.

For some reason, I had it in my head that this was releasing on the 18th instead of the 11th. Either way, I love the Tales series and I'm very stoked about picking this up. The only slight problem is going to be that I'm also buying CoD:WaW CE so slipping 100 bucks spent in one day by my wife is going to be hard... lol.

I'll get this game as soon as I can, so... count me in the [small] party :D ...

BTW Firestorm, this game wasn't outsourced... It was developed by a new team within Tales Studio...

I just popped in to say that THIS is what an Official Thread should look like. Short, simple, and to the point. Thank you!

i wish i could get this game, but i don't have the time or money. i'll be sure to pick it up over the summer though. i'll need something to keep me occupied over the summer lul, plus i can play with my little sister.

People are actually getting this game? Cmon most of JGAF didn't even like it and they eat up the worst JRPG shit out there.

If you didn't like ToS or TotA, you definitely WONT like DotNW... if you did, just wait a few days/weeks after release to read impressions or reviews and then make a decision...

PseudoKirby said:

Because that's the only reason the first game is considered good... right?
So... Is it impossible for you to think that there is a lot of people who liked ToS because it's actually good game and not only because they had just one console?
And what's the problem if those people are looking forward this game? I don't see anything wrong with that...

What? "most of JGAF" = Bebpo
Outside of him, just a few initial impressions by a couple of gaffers...

Its nice to see that Farore has stepped up as the "stanch defender of the game who gets owned if it sucks". Now we just need to see if Spruchy sticks around and we can have a classic gaf thread on our hands.
