Anime-Age Recommend me some

I have been wanting to watch a great anime with my fiance lately, but I dont know much of whats out there.

We really enjoyed X a whole lot. And we also enjoyed Death Note too. I am looking for an anime that is mostly serious with a great storyline like those stated above. Also, please no long running series like Bleach, because we dont have the time to watch all those episodes.

Berserk - the first one you should watch. Only 13 episodes. Best anime ever.

Cowboy Bebop

Paranoia Agent - Only 13 episodes, great series by Satoshi Kon of Perfect Blue, Paparika, Tokyo Godfathers, etc. movies.

If you liked the X character designs and the Death Note plot, you might enjoy Code Geass. Same designer, and another kinda battle of wits mixed in with some mecha.

They have a pretty decent recommendation thing there, its worked to help me find a few obscure shows i hadn't thought of before. also if you have netflix you can use it to get some more recommendations, but give anime planet a try.

Tengen Toppa Gurenn Lagann. Most awesome anime ever.
Fixed and yes! You will feel your blood boil within your veins as you watch this anime. Tengen Toppa Gurenn Lagann will make a man out of you.
Also, Kenshin OVAs are brilliant.
Ergo Proxy in HD is pure sex as well. Just food for thought. :D

Hooo boy:

Baccano!
Tenge Toppa Gurren Lagann
Ghost in the Shell Series (Movies, show... ect)
Noein
Texhnolyze
Slayers
Akira
Fullmetal Alchemist
Cowboy Bebop

That's just off the top of my head, in no particular order.

TTGL will make your dick grow three inches though.

Planetes

Fantastic and underwatched. Very few anime cliches, fantastic character development (1st half, episodic), and awesome storyline (2nd half, storyarc).

Some stuff I've watched and liked, note I haven't seen the entirety of all of these:
Flcl
Stand Alone Complex -my Fave
Tokko
Texhnolyze- Although I can see how someone could not like it
Last Exile-Very good
Kiddy Grade-I was surprised to have liked it.
Noein-I've only seen a bit but I like what I've seen so far
Full Metal Alchemist
Gantz-worth watching but not as good as I thought it would be
Planetes-just like Bistromathics said

Grave of the Fireflies. It always goes unmentioned, and it's a damn shame.
It's mentioned in nearly every "recommend me some anime movies" thread!

Yep, you can't go into a thread of anime recommendations without someone mentioning Grave of the Fireflies.

I guess I just noticed that it wasn't in GAF's Top 10 which kind of got me miffed. #26 on the list is way too low for me.

GAF isn't exactly the beacon of quality anime recommendations; more along the lines of what's most popular

Oh, if you don't mind movies then Satoshi Kon's "Millenium Actress" and "Paprika" are both very good and tackle pretty mature themes.

I'd would recommend Makoto Shinkai's "5 Centimeters per Second", but it left me depressed for a week or two.

I have to recommend some Makoto Shinkai.

Voices of a Distant Star and The Place Promised in Our Early Days are both wonderful and beautiful.

I've yet to watch Voices of a Distant Star but I'll second The Placed Promised in Our Early Days.

You forgot Kino's Journey.

I didn't like Code Geass much, especially having watched Death Note first. Sure, it's the "same" concept of cat/mouse, but Geass just takes the ridiculousness to a whole new level while laying on cliche after cliche. And at two full seasons, it isn't exactly the shortest anime either.

Just about.

Story-wise I'd say you'd want:

ghost in the shell stand alone complex

But because of my extreme fanboyness I can't recommend Ouran HSHC enough, even though it's practically the opposite of what you want. :lol (Except it's not long-running at 26 episodes, and it's definitely a very quality series.)

GURREN LAGANN.

After avoiding this series for forever I finally watched it a few days ago. You must watch it ASAP.
