Groov (XBL community game) = awesome

Do you like Geometry Wars? Do you like Q? Entertainment-style blending of music and visuals and vibration? Then you should download the demo for Groov; it's like Geo Wars inside an electric jazz fusion bar.

I stumbled across it tonight and ended up playing it for a couple hours. I also like how you can create your own beats once you unlock Jam Session mode. Pretty great stuff. Seems like it may have got lost (like most of the community games) in the dashboard.

the music is almost too uniform... in order to sync the beats, they delay the death/sound until the right time. while it keeps the song sounding okay, it just doesn't sound as interesting. the art looks like placeholder art. but where this game lacks the most is in the gameplay. enemies were just boring -- their mechanics were super basic.

but it did motivate me to fire up EverydayShooter again -- now THAT is an awesome game that got this concept right.

Relaxing, yet difficult. Seems like a good game to play before you go to bed or if you just want to chill.

Exactly like Rez did, although the quantisize limits were lower.

Groov I wasn't so keen on at first till I realised the limits on the control were lifted as the music kicked in.

from the XNA thread:
Groov best game I played today, might buy at only 200 points its a clean, chilled geowars clone based around beats being played when enemy's die. I was just about to get annoyed at the 8 way only firing made my fight with the controls a little when the beat sped up and along with it my firing and the fluidity of my controls.

How does it get at later levels as it progresses and how are the different modes, really should to drop the 200 on it.

Yeah, it's a great idea but it needs a bit more of its own gameplay identity, rather than just cloning Geometry Wars. An artist would help as well.

I think the game should also reward you for rhythmic firing patterns to create cool melody lines. Also some of the enemies could use some variation in their movement/attacks. And yes, art is way too basic.

For 200pts though, not a bad game at all.

I love the community games, littler by littel the quality is going up, the community is workign together and there will eb some really amazing games in the future.

I'm all about indie love

Lovin' the game. Much worth the meager 200 points for the time I've put in to it. I gotta say, though, it gets ridiculously hard to keep track of your ship amongst the throngs of enemies. Only at 40 000 points so far.
